Chelsea, which invested considerable sums in big names, has had more doubts than certainties in their attack.

Amid this confusion, the name of Christopher Nkunku has returned to the spotlight, not because of his performance, but because of his possible departure. Injuries plagued him, and he never quite established himself as an undisputed starter. Now, with rumours pointing towards Old Trafford, the case becomes even more interesting.

Manchester United Ready To Close Down £35m Move For Chelsea Player Christopher Nkunku

LONDON, ENGLAND – FEBRUARY 25: Christopher Nkunku of Chelsea warms up prior to the Premier League match between Chelsea FC and Southampton FC at Stamford Bridge on February 25, 2025 in London, England. (Photo by Julian Finney/Getty Images)

According to information published by Fichajes, Chelsea are ready to sell the striker if they receive an offer close to £35 million this summer. Manchester United are optimistic of having success in the deal in this summer transfer window, despite the negotiations being in the preliminary stages. Chelsea will receive an amount that is much lower than what they invested in the player, but the Stamford Bridge side need to reduce their wage bill. Moreover, Nkunku has struggled with injuries and a lack of consistency during his time with the Blues. He is not part of the plans of Enzo Maresca and hence, Chelsea want to sell him as quickly as possible.

Chelsea would be willing to sell Christopher Nkunku if an offer close to £35 million comes in. Although negotiations are still in the early stages, Manchester United are confident that they can close the deal during this summer transfer window. The figure, while lower than the player’s original cost, seems to reflect both the French striker’s current situation and the London club’s need to lighten their squad. Nkunku, a 27-year-old, has not achieved consistency, and the club will not stand in the way if the player finds an offer that appeals to him.

Opinion:

From Chelsea’s point of view, accepting a £35 million offer is a practical decision. Although they will not fully recoup their investment, they will be able to offload a player who has not performed as expected. Nkunku showed some moments of brilliance, but injuries and the team’s tactical context limited him. In that sense, freeing themselves from his contract and gaining financial leeway for other moves could help the club reorder their priorities.

Furthermore, it makes no sense to retain someone who has not earned a stable role. As for United, the move makes sense because of what Nkunku can bring if he manages to stay fit. He can move freely in all three attacking positions and provide solutions that Ruben Amorim’s team urgently need. The figure, although significant, is not excessive considering the current market and the player’s potential quality. For the player, it is a chance to start afresh at a club that value him and where he could find the space he has been lacking in London. If talks continue to progress, it will be a transfer that suits all parties.

At Stamford Bridge, there is a mixture of unease and assessment in the air.
