At one end, they wanted to strengthen their team with new signings for the UEFA Europa League and on the other hand, they wanted to manage the finances as the Profit and Sustainability Rules limited their moves. The pressure was intensified due to not qualifying for the Champions League this season, and this impacted their decision-making in this window.

The Lions signed out-of-favour Manchester United star, Jadon Sancho, in the last minutes of the Deadline day on loan and also brought Harvey Elliott from Liverpool on loan. Both of these players have something to prove, and this hunger might prove to be beneficial for Villa. Meanwhile, the club were sensible with their moves to sign Victor Lindelof and Marco Bizot. All these deals have covered various grey areas on the pitch.

Voids and unfinished business for Aston Villa:

However, there were a few flaws in this window. Firstly, the terms of Jadon Sancho’s deal are concerning, with Aston Villa paying the bulk of his salary and no buy-out clause. This deal could lead to uncertainty in the future.

LEEDS, ENGLAND – AUGUST 30: Jacob Ramsey of Newcastle United inspects the pitch ahead of the Premier League match between Leeds United and Newcastle United at Elland Road on August 30, 2025 in Leeds, England. (Photo by Jack Thomas/Getty Images)

Also, the sale of Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle United for €40m was financially necessary, but the departure of a local player always has a lot to do with the heart. On the other hand, the right-back problem remains unresolved.

The club suffered another blow this summer, as Crystal Palace acquired Jaydee Cannot, who had been on Villa’s radar. The good news was that they decided to hold on to Emi Martinez, as a goalkeeper of his experience and stature is not easily found.

Overall, this window was a mixed bag. Villa will benefit if the new signings can quickly adapt to Unai Emery’s vision and make an impact on the pitch. However, the delay in the deals and the incomplete preparations in some key areas show that the plan was not completely perfect. This window can be given 6.5 out of 10, in which there is a taste of both hope and risk.

Aston Villa had a balanced approach in the summer transfer window of 2025.
