Leeds United hold fifteenth place in the Premier League as the 2025\/26 season enters its final weeks. The club successfully brought in reliable figures like Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu to strengthen the defence. However, a new report from Football Insider suggests a major shift in recruitment strategy. Former Manchester United<\/a> chief scout Mick Brown<\/a> claims the board now wants to sign a star player during the summer window. Brown argues that the current squad lacks anyone who could walk into a top-four side and immediately improve their starting eleven.<\/p>\n

Leeds United eye marquee signing to break mid-table cycle<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The recruitment team is looking at the impact Granit Xhaka had at Sunderland<\/a> and Bruno Guimaraes had at Newcastle<\/a> as their main blueprints. Sunderland currently sit in eleventh place. They owe much of that to the leadership of the 33-year-old Swiss star, Xhaka, who joined them from Bayer Leverkusen.<\/p>\n

Similarly, Guimaraes remains the heartbeat of a Newcastle side that became a European regular after he arrived. Leeds United have a solid base of hard workers. Even so, they clearly lack that world-class spark to win tight matches. By chasing a big-name signing with top-flight experience, the Elland Road bosses hope to bridge the gap between mid-table safety and European spots.<\/p>\n

\u201cLeeds have a very solid squad at the moment,\u201d Brown told Football Insider.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut they haven\u2019t got any individual players who you\u2019d say could go to a team higher up the Premier League and improve them.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook through their squad player by player, they don\u2019t have an outstanding name where you think, he\u2019s going to be the one who makes or breaks their season.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of their recruitment has been focused on signing solid and dependable players, but they now want to go that next step and keep pushing forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe likes of Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu are reliable and solid Premier League players, and they\u2019re the ones who Leeds will look to build around.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut really, they want to bring in a real talismanic player, a big name who can come in and make a real difference to push them higher up the table.<\/p>\n

This ambitious plan looks good on paper. However, history shows that one star often struggles if the players around them stay the same. Bruno Guimaraes, now 28 and a key part of the Brazil national team, thrived because Newcastle United invested heavily across the entire squad. He has nine goals and four assists this term. This shows the kind of attacking output Leeds United desperately need from their midfield. Ethan Ampadu provides great cover, but he rarely dictates the tempo like a true playmaker.<\/p>\n

The Yorkshire giants must not expect a lone veteran to carry the psychological weight of the whole club. If they sign a high-profile name without fixing the finishing issues next to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, the newcomer might end up isolated. On top of that, the club must ensure any talisman has the mobility Daniel Farke\u2019s system demands. Success depends on finding a leader who has Xhaka\u2019s grit and the technical skill of Guimaraes.
