The 23-year-old Burkina Faso international is currently at Ibrox on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, O’Rourke noted that Rohl rates the centre-back highly. However, the finances at Ibrox create a real problem.

Rangers Want Nasser Djiga Deal Made Permanent, But Wolves’ Price Tag Complicates Things

Djiga has a contract with Wolves until 2030. His asking price is high enough to strain the Rangers’ tight budget. O’Rourke explained that Rohl wants to finish the deal before the summer window closes. Even so, the club must invest in several other squad areas. They cannot easily pay a premium fee for one defender. The situation is simple, and that’s the interest is there, but the cash is short.

Djiga moved to Wolves from Red Star Belgrade in February 2025. He signed a deal until 2030 after an 18-month stint in Serbia. There, he won a league and cup double and played in the Champions League. At Rangers, he has started 33 games and made two substitute appearances during the 2025-26 season.

“Yeah, I’m sure in an ideal scenario Rangers would be interested in making Djiga’s move permanent, but it’s a difficult deal to do.

“Danny Rohl would like to make the deal permanent at the end of the season, but whether it’s financially viable for the Rangers remains to be seen.

“The price tag makes it difficult for Rangers to try and sign him permanently.

“For Rangers, there’ll be lots of areas of the squad they’ll be looking to strengthen in, so they might not be able to fork out that money to sign Djiga permanently.”

Djiga’s strengths stand out clearly. He is calm on the ball, strong in the air, and reads the game well. These traits helped strengthen the Rangers defence during a tough year. Still, Djiga has shown some weaknesses. He lacked consistency in early 2026 and lost his spot in the team for a while. He eventually fought back into the lineup and helped secure consecutive clean sheets. That dip in form under pressure remains the main concern.

Should Rangers Push for Djiga at a Reduced Price?

PORTO, PORTUGAL – JANUARY 29: Nasser Djiga of Rangers reacts after Francisco Moura of FC Porto (not pictured) scores his team’s second goal during the UEFA Europa League 2025/26 League Phase MD8 match between FC Porto and Rangers FC at Estadio do Dragao on January 29, 2026 in Porto, Portugal. Reports suggest Wolves will sell Djiga for about £5 million this summer. This figure is half of the £10 million they paid Red Star Belgrade just a year ago. On paper, this looks like a steal, but Rangers currently trail leaders Hearts by three points. It is a tight three-way title race with only eight games left. The club are focusing on winning the league right now, not signing contracts.

Meanwhile, clubs in France, Germany, and the Netherlands are watching Djiga. Rangers cannot wait forever. Djiga is only 23, has Champions League experience, and plays regularly for Burkina Faso. At £5 million, he offers great long-term value. Rangers need to find the money soon, or a European rival will choose for them.

Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke reports that Rangers boss Danny Rohl wants to sign Nasser Djiga permanently.
