Speaking to Football Insider, he noted that dropping an 18-year-old into the pressure environment of Glasgow is a gamble. He pointed to Mikey Moore’s loan from Tottenham as proof that even the best young players need a grace period to handle the pressure at Ibrox.

Still, Wyness sees the logic behind the move. He admitted that if Geragusian stays fit and delivers on the pitch, he could eventually net Rangers a massive profit. Before making a move, however, Wyness suggested the club do their homework on the teenager’s personality. He thinks the club’s massive profile and deep connections with Premier League scouts make Ibrox the perfect platform for a rising star.

“My first question is, why are Sunderland letting him go?

“If the reason is because they believe that he can go on to a platform like Rangers and showcase himself, then he would get a move down to the Premier League, I’m pretty sure pretty quickly.

“For Rangers, they’ve got to be careful because taking an 18-year-old into the Glasgow pressure cooker isn’t always easy either, and that may not be the best platform. Mikey Moore seems to be an example where it took him a little while to settle down, but he’s done it now, and he understands it and has enjoyed it.

“If he is as good as they think he is, and he stays injury-free, then that’s exactly the type of talent that can end up becoming a big money spinner for the club.

“It can be difficult for some people, so I’d want to do some research into the personality and the character of the player.”

Do Rangers Actually Need Geragusian, Or Is This Just Smart Business?

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND – MARCH 21: Rangers manager Danny Röhl is seen during the William Hill Premiership match between Rangers and Aberdeen at Ibrox Stadium on March 21, 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland. (Photo by Ian MacNicol/Getty Images)

Geragusian has racked up 10 goals and six assists in 34 appearances for Sunderland’s Under-21s. Senior manager Regis Le Bris clearly thinks highly of him, having called him up to first-team training several times. The left-footer brings his physical attributes, offering both aerial power and the strength to hold up play. Those are clear assets. On the flip side, the red flag is just as clear as he has no senior experience, which makes him a total wildcard at the professional level.

Because of his scholarship status, FIFA rules mean clubs outside of England can get him for a compensation fee of roughly €200,000. For Rangers, that makes the financial downside almost non-existent. With Bojan Miovski and Danilo both potentially moving on this summer, Geragusian could fill a gap in the squad, developing with the reserves while providing an option off the bench.

The reality is that Rangers don’t strictly need Geragusian for next season. They need proven goal scorers who can impact a title race right away, not another project. However, at roughly £173,000, this feels less like a traditional transfer and more like a low-risk investment. If he hits his stride, the payoff for the Rangers will be huge. With Nottingham Forest also showing interest, Rangers need to make a move fast. I feel they should sign him, manage him carefully, and not be tempted to throw him into the deep end too soon.

Former Aberdeen, Everton, and Aston Villa chief Keith Wyness recently joined Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast to discuss Rangers’ interest in Sunderland striker Finn Geragusian.
