Speaking to the Glasgow Times, Ledley made it clear that the move to Glasgow wasn’t as simple as people thought at the time.

What did Joe Ledly say?

With his contract ending after the 2009-10 season, he talked to a few different clubs. Rangers, Stoke City, and West Bromwich Albion were all in the mix before he eventually signed a four-year deal with Celtic on July 12, 2010. His personal side of the story fills in the gaps. He remembers scoring against Celtic in a pre-season friendly for Cardiff, which sparked some initial interest. Rangers reached out to his agent, but nothing serious ever came of it.

The situation at Stoke was a bit different; Tony Pulis wanted Ledley to play at left-back, but the Welshman turned that down immediately. West Brom was also an option, but everything changed when Neil Lennon flew Ledley and his family to Glasgow.

Lennon walked him through the stadium and kept things simple. He didn’t try to oversell the club; he just laid out his vision and mentioned the chance to play in the Champions League. Ledley now calls joining Lennon the best decision he ever made, saying Celtic was the best club he ever played for. It is high praise from a man who spent his childhood in Cardiff.

“I played in the Algarve Cup one year, in pre-season, for Cardiff and I think I scored against Celtic to win it. I remember Ally McCoist was there with a few Rangers people, and they actually spoke to my agent first. That was just a brief thing though and they never followed up on it – I just know they were interested in signing me. “And then before I signed for Celtic, I actually spoke with Tony Pulis about joining Stoke, but he wanted me to play at left-back for him, which I just didn’t want to do – I always saw myself as a midfielder.

“And then I know West Brom were interested too, but when Lenny [Neil Lennon] gave me a call and flew me and my family up to Celtic. I had a look around the stadium and spoke to the manager, and he explained what the club was about, what he wanted to achieve, and obviously the Champions League football was a massive draw for me.

“He went through every single detail with me and was just spot on, without lying to me or trying to oversell anything. He knew exactly what I needed to hear, and I’d say signing for him was the best decision I made in my life. It was the best club I’ve ever played for.

“It was hard for me to leave my boyhood club, who I’d achieved so much, but my contract was up and I just knew it was the right time for me to move on. I needed a new challenge, and I needed to be in a new city.”

Did Ledley’s Celtic decision reveal something modern players still get wrong about career choices?

GLASGOW, UNITED KINGDOM – SEPTEMBER 25: Edwin De Graaf of Hibernian (L) competes with Joe Ledley of Celtic during the Clydesdale Bank Scottish Premier League match between Celtic and Hibernian at Celtic Park on September 25, 2010 in Glasgow, Scotland. (Photo by Ian MacNicol/Getty Images)

The short answer is yes. It’s a point worth thinking about. Ledley found a manager who gave him facts instead of empty flattery. Lennon treated him like an adult who could make a real choice. That’s a far cry from how many transfers work today, where agents often chase massive wage packets and hype rather than looking at the actual football.

Ledley went on to win three league titles and two Scottish Cups, becoming a vital part of Lennon’s European runs. Those trophies weren’t a fluke. They happened because the fit was right and the manager was straight with him from the start.

Now, in April 2026, as Celtic looks for a permanent manager after Martin O’Neill’s interim spell, Ledley is pushing for Craig Bellamy. He believes Bellamy’s obsession with detail and attacking style is exactly what the club need next. It makes sense as the man who picked Celtic because of straight talk now wants a manager who does the same.

Joe Ledley, the retired Welsh midfielder now 39, has shared some candid details about how he ended up at Celtic Park back in the summer of 2010.
