According to a report from Football Insider, former Aston Villa<\/a> scout Mick Brown<\/a> suggests that a massive bid for Belgian midfielder Amadou Onana might force Villa to approve a sale this summer. Brown pointed straight to Villa\u2019s tight budget under Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), comparing their situation to Newcastle United<\/a>, who had to sell stars to avoid getting hit with penalties.<\/p>\n

He noted that Aston Villa simply don\u2019t have the room to spend unless they bring in cash through sales, making Onana a prime candidate to leave. Brown also mentioned a January 2026 interview where the 24-year-old admitted he dreams of joining a world-class club, even while playing the best football of his career at Villa Park. With Manchester United and Barcelona still interested, the interest in him is very real heading into the summer.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut unfortunately that\u2019s the position they seem to be in with the financial rules, similar to what we\u2019ve seen happen with Newcastle as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey don\u2019t have the room to spend money unless they sell players, we\u2019re told, so then of course the talk is about which players could leave.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnana is one who I wouldn\u2019t be surprised to see go. If a huge offer came in for him from a top club, Villa might see him as somebody they can cash in on.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe hinted at it before in an interview, suggested he could leave for a bigger club, so if that opportunity comes up now then it could happen.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnai Emery, ideally, wouldn\u2019t be losing any of his best players because he wants to build on the success they\u2019ve had, but it\u2019s difficult with their finances.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is where things get tricky. Based on FootyStats, Onana has played 13 Premier League matches this season, netting two goals and picking up two yellow cards over 846 minutes. While those stats might seem quiet, they hide a crucial truth, and that\u2019s Villa\u2019s entire midfield works because Onana wins the ball back and lets the creators do their thing. His aggressive style, physical presence, and knack for reading the game have made him shine in his debut season.<\/p>\n

Since his contract runs until 2029, Villa hold all the cards in negotiations. But the underlying issue hasn\u2019t changed. Selling him provides a quick financial band-aid but leaves a massive hole in Unai Emery\u2019s lineup. Boubacar Kamara is a solid backup, but he doesn\u2019t bring that same spark or energy.<\/p>\n

Honestly, Aston Villa need Onana for next season, especially with the Europa League or the UCL requiring a deep, high-quality squad. Letting him go without a replacement ready to step in would be a huge gamble for a project that\u2019s finally heading in the right direction.<\/p>\n

I feel that Aston Villa will likely sell if a bid tops \u00a370 million. United or Barcelona will probably make a serious move, and under PSR pressure, owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens will prioritise the balance sheet over keeping a fan favourite.
