Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has all but confirmed Karl Darlow will start in goal against Chelsea<\/a> in Sunday\u2019s FA Cup semi-final at Wembley. Farke noted the selection decision is quite easy, though he didn\u2019t name his full XI publicly before briefing the players.<\/p>\n

What did Daniel Farke say?<\/h3>\n

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Thursday, Farke<\/a> made a clear distinction between what his two senior keepers have brought to the side this season. Lucas Perri, who arrived last summer, played a big part in the earlier FA Cup rounds to help the club reach Wembley.<\/p>\n

However, Darlow has been the go-to man in the league since January, stepping in after Farke aired concerns over Perri\u2019s decision-making following costly mistakes against Manchester United and Newcastle. Since taking over for the cup tie at Derby County, Darlow hasn\u2019t let go of the shirt. His midweek performance only strengthened his case, as he made a vital save with his feet at a key moment and looked composed and well-positioned throughout.<\/p>\n

Farke spoke<\/a> highly of all four keepers at the club, Darlow, Perri, Alex Cairns, and Illan Meslier, praising their unity as a reflection of the overall squad culture. \u201cI\u2019m pretty delighted with the performance of my goalkeepers in recent months,\u201d<\/em> he said, adding that the group\u2019s bond is a standard for the rest of the dressing room.<\/p>\n

The manager\u2019s point was simple: while Perri\u2019s cup run matters, Darlow\u2019s form has been the reason Leeds have tightened up at the back, and the pecking order currently sits firmly in the Welshman\u2019s favour.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s quite easy. I won\u2019t speak about the starting line-up before my players know. But if you analyse what we\u2019ve done in the cup and during the season, you could guess pretty well what I\u2019ll do this weekend. <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cKarl has been fantastic for us on the Premier League level, a key player and big factor in why we haven\u2019t conceded too many. Lucas has been fantastic in the FA Cup, playing a crucial role in reaching this semi-final.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m pretty happy with the contribution of my keepers, along with Alex Cairns and Illan Meslier, and how tight they are. I think it\u2019s a sign and a role model of what we are also as a whole group. I\u2019m pretty delighted with the performance of my goalkeepers in recent months.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

That\u2019s the real question behind the obvious answer. Farke has tried to keep it split, cup form for Perri, league form for Darlow, but that actually does Darlow a bit of a disservice. Since winning back his spot in January, Darlow has been one of the most reliable keepers, providing a steady hand.<\/p>\n

Against a Chelsea side with this much quality, experience under pressure is everything. Perri lost his place specifically because he struggled with important decisions. At Wembley, with so much on the line, Leeds need the man who has shown he can stay calm under fire. That man is Darlow.
