Panathinaikos has popped up as a serious European option, with Rafa Benitez reportedly interested in bringing him to Greece.

However, Benitez’s own future at the club is up in the air, which might stall a deal and leave the door open for Saudi or Turkish sides. Tavernier is currently one of Rangers’ top earners at around £30,000 a week, and while the club initially hoped to extend his stay, his age has made a new deal less likely. He’s set to leave Ibrox as a free agent in June after eleven years and nearly 500 games, moving on as the highest-scoring defender in the history of British football.

“There’s nothing set in stone with Tavernier. There’s been interest from Saudi Arabia.

“Obviously, he’s announced that he’s leaving Rangers after a really successful 11-year spell at the club.

“I don’t envisage that he will make the move down to England in the Premier League, I think probably at this stage of his career.

“Tavernier himself would prefer a new challenge, so maybe a move to Europe or the Saudi Pro League, where there has been interest in the past.

“He’ll have options from a number of clubs in different countries, and maybe big contracts as well, so a return to England now is unlikely.”

Does Tavernier deserve a bigger final chapter than Saudi football?

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND – FEBRUARY 04: James Tavernier of Rangers celebrates after scoring the opening goal from the penalty spot during the William Hill Premiership match between Rangers and Kilmarnock at Ibrox Stadium on February 04, 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland. Between his overlapping runs, his clinical set-pieces, and a strange knack for scoring goals most defenders wouldn’t even dream of, Tavernier has been the club’s most dependable spark for over a decade. His career tally of 131 goals puts him ahead of every other defender in British history, a record that deserves massive respect.

But it’s only fair to look at his weaknesses, too. His positioning against fast wingers often left Rangers exposed, and he took plenty of heat after heavy Old Firm defeats where his attacking instincts left gaps that Celtic were all too happy to exploit. While the Saudi Pro League offers huge money and a high profile, it could also see him fade away from the competitive European stage.

Considering how fit Tavernier is and his natural leadership, a move to the Bundesliga or Ligue 1 would feel like a much more fulfilling final chapter. Rangers built their game around his energy, and whatever club sign him next will get that same drive. He deserves a platform where he can prove he’s moving forward, rather than just heading for a quiet retirement.

Rangers captain James Tavernier looks ready to swap Scottish football for the Saudi Pro League once his contract runs out this summer, with a return to England now looking unlikely.
