The death toll from the unrest had reached nearly 7,000 people as of Tuesday, the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency said. The group says that it verifies each death with a network of activists on the ground in Iran and that its data goes through \u201cmultiple internal checks.\u201d <\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s government put the official death toll at 3,117 last month. NBC News could not independently verify either figure.<\/p>\n

Trump threatened to intervene<\/a> if the regime shot or executed protesters, but held off from immediate attacks. The U.S. has been building up its military forces in the region for weeks, forces that could support possible strikes as well as pressure Iran in talks.<\/p>\n

The president appeared to escalate that pressure on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Trump indicated he could send a second aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf if talks failed \u2014 the USS Abraham Lincoln is already in the area<\/a>. \u201cWe have an armada that is heading there and another one might be going,\u201d he said in an interview with Axios. <\/p>\n

Trump warned last month that time was \u201crunning out\u201d<\/a> for Tehran to come to the table and negotiate a \u201cfair and equitable deal\u201d or face the force of a \u201cmassive armada\u201d of American ships.<\/p>\n

Tehran said it was ready to defend itself, raising fears of a wider regional confrontation. <\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s Foreign Minister, Abbas Aragchi, said on Sunday that there was \u201cno other option but to negotiate\u201d with the United States.<\/p>\n

In another interview with Israel\u2019s Channel 12 on Tuesday, Trump said the U.S. will have to do \u201csomething very tough\u201d if a deal is not reached. <\/p>\n

Israel’s leader, Netanyahu, is in Washington in a likely effort to try to convince Trump that any deal must focus not just on curbing Tehran\u2019s nuclear potential but its ballistic missile program and support for regional proxy groups, such as Hamas and Hezbollah. <\/p>\n

Originally scheduled for later this month, Netanyahu\u2019s visit was brought forward following a first round of U.S.-Iran talks that took place in Oman last week. <\/a><\/p>\n

Trump told Axios on Tuesday that it was a \u201cno-brainer\u201d for any deal to cover Iran\u2019s nuclear program, but that he thought it should also address Iran\u2019s ballistic missile stockpiles.<\/p>\n

Iranian officials have ruled out putting its missiles, one of the largest such arsenals in the Middle East, up for discussion.<\/p>\n

Ali Shamkhani, an adviser to Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said Wednesday that Iran\u2019s missile capability was not negotiable, state-run news agency IRNA reported. <\/p>\n

Israel is concerned that Iran is expanding production of the missile program, which was damaged in the 12 day war between the countries last year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
