J.P. Cooney, ex-Trump prosecutor in Jack Smith\u2019s office, is running for Congress<\/h2>\n

A former deputy to ex-special counsel Jack Smith,<\/a> J.P. Cooney, announced thismorning that he is launching a congressional bid in Virginia. <\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want my children, friends, or community to have any doubt about where I stand in this moment,\u201d Cooney said in a post on LinkedIn. \u201cToday, I am announcing my candidacy for Congress in Virginia\u2019s proposed new Seventh District.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cooney shared an article from The New York Times,<\/a> which first reported his election bid, and said he was running as a Democrat.<\/p>\n

In his time working with Smith, Cooney served as \u201ca lead prosecutor in both criminal prosecutions of President Trump for obstruction of justice and conspiracy,\u201d his LinkedIn account says, referring to the federal indictments of the then-former president on charges related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election results and alleged mishandling of classified documents.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Lawmakers are likely to press her on top issues involving the Justice Department, including the failed attempt to indict six Democratic lawmakers over a video they appeared in telling members of the military and intelligence community not to comply with illegal orders and the department’s handling of the Epstein files. <\/p>\n

The department recently released millions more pages of documents related to Epstein, but critics are urging more transparency in releasing additional documents and uncovering certain redactions. <\/p>\n

There are 44 lawmakers on the committee, and each member will receive five minutes for questions. <\/p>\n
