The US will not get Greenland<\/a>, its new prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, has said in response to Donald Trump\u2019s latest statements that he wants to take control of the vast Arctic country.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Trump says that the United States is getting Greenland. Let me be clear: the United States won\u2019t get that. We do not belong to anyone else. We determine our own future,\u201d Nielsen said.<\/p>\n

During an interview with NBC on Saturday, the US president said<\/a>: \u201cWe\u2019ll get Greenland. Yeah, 100%\u201d and argued that while there\u2019s a \u201cgood possibility that we could do it without military force \u2026 I don\u2019t take anything off the table.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump said he \u201cabsolutely\u201d had had real conversations about annexing the semi-autonomous Danish territory.<\/p>\n

Nielsen, a 33-year-old former minister of industry and minerals, was sworn in as Greenland\u2019s youngest prime minister on Friday. In his first press conference as leader, in his home town of Nuuk, he called for political unity to combat external pressures. His message was clear: \u201cAt a time when we as a people are under pressure, we must stand together.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was sworn in a few hours before a high-profile delegation led by the US vice-president, JD Vance, arrived on the island. Vance said: \u201cOur message to Denmark is very simple: you have not done a good job by the people of Greenland<\/a>. You have underinvested in the people of Greenland and you have underinvested in the security architecture of this incredible, beautiful landmass.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Danish foreign minister, Lars L\u00f8kke Rasmussen, said on Saturday: \u201cWe are open to criticisms, but let me be completely honest, we do not appreciate the tone in which it\u2019s being delivered.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not how you speak to your close allies, and I still consider Denmark<\/a> and the United States to be close allies.\u201d<\/p>\n
