Photo by Larry Valenzuela, CalMatters\/CatchLight Local<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>California is suing the Trump administration after it said it plans to pull over $600 million in public health care funds to four Democratic-led states, including California.<\/p>\n<p>Last week President Donald Trump\u2019s budget office directed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to rescind the grant money from California, Colorado, Illinois and Minnesota. California Attorney General Rob Bonta said in a statement that this action \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/news\/press-releases\/attorney-general-bonta-sues-trump-administration-protect-over-600-million-health\">would irreparably harm the states<\/a>,\u201d and filed a lawsuit Wednesday with the other states to block the cuts from happening.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s budget office said those states were singled out because the money was \u201cinconsistent with agency priorities,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/02\/09\/health\/trump-public-health-cuts-california.html\">The New York Times<\/a>. Nearly two-thirds of the money is earmarked for California over several years.<\/p>\n<p>Grants that are potentially on the chopping block have been reported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/politics\/article\/trump-health-cuts-california-21345100.php\">San Francisco Chronicle<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/story\/2026-02-10\/600-million-in-trump-administration-health-cuts-will-hit-california-hiv-programs\">Los Angeles Times<\/a> to include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$7.5 million to the California Department of Public Health<\/li>\n<li>$1.3 million to Alameda County to hire more staff at its health department<\/li>\n<li>$1.7 million to the Santa Clara Public Health Department<\/li>\n<li>$1.1 million to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health to monitor HIV risk<\/li>\n<li>$383,000 to the Los Angeles LGBT Center to prevent HIV in local communities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In a statement to CalMatters, the state\u2019s public health department said it is \u201cactively monitoring the situation\u201d but has yet to receive official notification from the CDC. Gov. Gavin Newsom\u2019s office said Wednesday that Trump\u2019s directive follows \u201ca familiar pattern.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Marissa Saldivar<\/strong>, Newsom spokesperson, in an emailed statement: \u201cThe President publicly claims he will rip away public health funding from states that voted against him, while offering no details or formal notice.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>In other health news: <\/strong>A spate of measles cases has Shasta County on edge, but officials say they are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shastacounty.gov\/health-human-services\/page\/more-shasta-county-measles-cases-confirmed-no-new-exposure-sites\">monitoring the outbreak<\/a>, which was first reported on Jan. 30. At least eight residents were recently confirmed to have the illness so far \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdph.ca.gov\/Programs\/CID\/DCDC\/Pages\/Immunization\/measles.aspx\">the most out of any California county<\/a> this year \u2014 and are remaining in isolation. As of Monday, the state has had a total of 17 measles cases. The legislation sets aside <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/newsletter\/operation-stonegarden\/#wm-story-1\">$90 million in state funds for Planned Parenthood<\/a>, but reporters\u2019 questions related to other matters involving the governor <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ZavalaA\/status\/2021686632617799996\">prompted Siebel Newsom to say<\/a>, \u201cYou wonder why we have such a horrific war on women in this country \u2026 because you don\u2019t seem to care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is relatively rare for reporters to get the chance to ask the governor questions directly \u2014 not through a communications team \u2014 and it is not at all uncommon for reporters to ask government officials questions unrelated to the event at which they are appearing.
