{"id":10086,"date":"2026-02-12T14:15:15","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T14:15:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wpinitiate.com\/echo-test\/demo973e36f5\/2026\/02\/12\/russia-shrugs-off-trumps-tariff-threats-on-those-who-provide-oil-to-cuba-cnbc\/"},"modified":"2026-02-12T14:15:15","modified_gmt":"2026-02-12T14:15:15","slug":"russia-shrugs-off-trumps-tariff-threats-on-those-who-provide-oil-to-cuba-cnbc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wpinitiate.com\/echo-test\/demo973e36f5\/2026\/02\/12\/russia-shrugs-off-trumps-tariff-threats-on-those-who-provide-oil-to-cuba-cnbc\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia shrugs off Trump\u2019s tariff threats on those who provide oil to Cuba &#8211; CNBC"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\">\n<div id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108264876\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<p>A vehicle fills up with fuel at a gas station in Havana on January 28, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Yamil Lage | Afp | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The Kremlin on Thursday said it is actively discussing what help it can provide to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/02\/09\/cuba-airlines-fuel-energy-oil-us-trump-pressure.html\">fuel-starved Cuba<\/a>, dismissing U.S. President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2026\/01\/addressing-threats-to-the-united-states-by-the-government-of-cuba\/\" target=\"_blank\">tariff threat<\/a> to sanction countries that send oil to the Caribbean island.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We wouldn&#8217;t want any escalation, but on the other hand, we don&#8217;t have much trade right now,&#8221; Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/ria.ru\/20260212\/peskov-2073883646.html\" target=\"_blank\">Russian state news outlet RIA Novosti<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>His comments came in response to a question about whether the Kremlin was concerned about the Trump administration&#8217;s tariff threats.<\/p>\n<p>The White House has pledged to impose tariffs on countries that provide any oil to Cuba, whether directly or indirectly, saying the communist-run government represents an &#8220;unusual and extraordinary threat.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The U.S. has stepped up its pressure campaign on Cuba&#8217;s leadership since Jan. 3, when it conducted an extraordinary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/03\/trump-us-operation-captured-venezuela-president-nicolas-maduro.html\">military operation<\/a>\u00a0to depose Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, a longtime ally of Cuba&#8217;s government.<\/p>\n<p>Peskov reportedly said Thursday that Moscow would seek to engage in &#8220;constructive dialogue&#8221; with the U.S. over Cuba&#8217;s deepening energy crisis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s clear that it&#8217;s impossible to discuss these issues in such a public manner right now for obvious reasons,&#8221; Peskov <a href=\"https:\/\/ria.ru\/20260212\/kreml-2073888992.html\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedLinks-1\" data-test=\"RelatedLinks\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-RelatedLinks\">\n<p><h2>Read more<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Cuba, which has been the subject of a U.S. trade embargo for more than 60 years, is mired in a worsening economic crisis.<\/p>\n<p>As such, Cuba&#8217;s government recently outlined emergency measures designed to protect essential services and ration fuel supplies for key sectors. <\/p>\n<p>The plan <a href=\"https:\/\/sg.news.yahoo.com\/cuba-adopts-urgent-measures-address-022620716.html\" target=\"_blank\">reportedly<\/a>\u00a0includes restrictions on fuel sales, the closure of some tourist establishments, shortening school days and a reduction of the working week at state-owned companies to four days, from Monday to Thursday. <\/p>\n<p>Cuba&#8217;s leadership <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/02\/09\/cuba-airlines-fuel-energy-oil-us-trump-pressure.html\">warned<\/a> on Sunday that international airlines would no longer be able to refuel in the country due to an ongoing aviation fuel shortage.<\/p>\n<p><span data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-11\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/AC-CA\/\">Air Canada<\/a><span><span id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aircanada.com\/media\/air-canada-suspending-cuba-service-in-response-to-aviation-fuel-shortage\/\" target=\"_blank\">subsequently canceled all flights<\/a> to the island, though the airline said Monday that it would bring some 3,000 customers already in the country back home over the coming days. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A vehicle fills up with fuel at a gas station in Havana on January 28, 2026.
