The foundation has pushed to defund abortion providers and restrict transgender medical care. Other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/trump-administration\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Trump administration<\/a> officials, including the secretary of state, Marco Rubio, and the defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, are expected to participate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re making a statement during this week as America reads the Bible, that there is so much in the Bible that we can gain wisdom and discernment from, there is so much that can heal our families, that can rescue us from depression and anxiety and can heal our inner cities and heal our land &#8230; I believe the president\u2019s saying that by reading this scripture specifically,\u201d Bunni Pounds, founder of Christians Engaged, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/trump-set-read-scripture-oval-office-america-reads-bible-event-starting-sunday\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">told<\/a> Fox News Digital last week.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s appearance comes after a slew of recent moves that have drawn scrutiny and sowed division among his devout supporters.<\/p>\n<p>In early April, the president caught enormous flak for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/apr\/07\/israel-warns-iran-lives-at-risk-if-they-use-trains-trump-deadline\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">threatening<\/a> to wipe out Iranian civilization, as he pressured the country to reopen the strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for oil tankers.<\/p>\n<p>Pope Leo XIV <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ms.now\/news\/pope-leo-trump-iran-civilization-war\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">admonished<\/a> Trump\u2019s remarks as \u201ctruly unacceptable\u201d, to which the president responded by lashing out on social media. In a 12 April<strong> <\/strong>Truth Social <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116394704213456431\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">post<\/a>, Trump called the first American-born pontiff \u201cweak on crime\u201d and \u201cterrible for foreign policy\u201d. He also said the pope was only elected so the conclave could curry favor with him.<\/p>\n<p>The exchange brought into renewed focus Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/apr\/18\/trump-pope-norman-vincent-peale\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">childhood<\/a>, during which time he attended a Manhattan church led by a pastor who opposed John F Kennedy\u2019s presidential candidacy because of the politician\u2019s Catholic beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>The fallout from the broadside has placed the Republican party in a thorny position, as lawmakers attempt to shore up support before the 2026 midterms. Some conservative supporters slammed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/apr\/13\/trump-ai-image-christ-like-figure-backlash\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">meme<\/a> as blasphemous. When asked by reporters about the later-deleted post, Trump said he thought it was portraying him as a doctor.<\/p>\n<p>Despite a history of inflammatory remarks and a hush-payment scandal involving a former porn actor, evangelical Christians remain a core voting bloc for Trump.<\/p>\n<p>On the 2024 campaign trail, he pledged to \u201cbring back Christianity\u201d. He has increasingly blurred the lines between state and church.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, he established a Religious Liberty Commission, tasked with considering voluntary prayer time in public schools and the first amendment rights of pastors, among other topics.
