Trump stirs FL retirement community &#8211; USA Today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>May 1, 2026<span>Updated May 2, 2026, 2:02 a.m. ET<\/span><\/p>\n<div xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\">\n<p>THE VILLAGES, FL &#8211; They skipped pickleball matches, softball practice and regular Friday card games, broke out their MAGA hats and \u201cNo Kings\u201d signs, hopped into golf carts and gathered in one of the largest senior communities in America to make their voices heard.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/politics\/donald-trump\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|\u2691u\">President Donald Trump<\/a> was in town, and The Villages \u2013 a retirement mecca in Central Florida \u2013 was abuzz.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of Trump-loving seniors waited for hours to show their appreciation, packing into a school gymnasium for a boisterous rally where they cheered on the president as he promoted a tax break and other policies aimed at older Americans. The president\u2019s trip to The Villages \u2013 in an area where Republicans vastly outnumber Democrats \u2013 offered an opportunity to rally his base and speak to an important constituency of older voters who will be critical in the upcoming midterm election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like everything about him,\u201d said Jackie Williams, a 74-year-old retiree from New Jersey who voted for Trump three times and would do so again \u201cif I could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Williams waited in a long line with other Villagers to see Trump, who took the stage in front of a \u201cgolden age for your golden years\u201d sign. The president told the crowd that his tax break for seniors is fattening their refund checks.<\/p>\n<figure><img fetchpriority=\"high\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2026\/05\/01\/NTGS\/89900955007-gai-trump-149127.jpg?width=660&#038;height=474&#038;fit=crop&#038;format=pjpg&#038;auto=webp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2026\/05\/01\/NTGS\/89900955007-gai-trump-149127.jpg?width=1320&#038;height=948&#038;fit=crop&#038;format=pjpg&#038;auto=webp 2x\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Supporters hold signs before President Donald Trump speaks at Middleton High School (The Villages Charter School) on May 1, 2026, in The Villages.\" previous-src=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2026\/05\/01\/NTGS\/89900955007-gai-trump-149127.jpg?width=660&#038;height=474&#038;fit=crop&#038;format=pjpg&#038;auto=webp\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThat means more money to visit your grandkids, bigger budget for taking a trip to someplace that you want to go, or extra dinners out with your family, you\u2019re going to do a lot,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump pointed to 401k retirement accounts swollen by rising stock prices, Medicare changes such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/11\/06\/trump-medicare-coverage-weight-loss-drugs\/87122843007\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|\u2691u\">covering weight loss drugs<\/a> and other actions targeting prescription drug costs.<\/p>\n<p>The president indicated he felt secure in The Villages, noting the recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2026\/04\/27\/white-house-correspondents-dinner-shooting-donald-trump-updates--live\/89811494007\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|\u2691u\">shooting at a press gala<\/a> he attended and concerns about his safety in public spaces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey want me to be in a secure place. I said: \u2018What\u2019s more secure than The Villages?\u2019\u201d Trump said of the GOP stronghold.<\/p>\n<p>The rally provided a big show of support for a president facing political turbulence. He was supposed to be at softball practice Friday, but since Trump won a second term he increasingly has been compelled to publicly show his disapproval of the president.<\/p>\n<p>Hoecker, 76, worked in insurance in Atlanta before retiring and moving to The Villages 12 years ago. An independent, Hoecker said he never attended a protest until recently, when he began showing up at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2026\/03\/29\/no-kings-rallies-a-red-flare-for-trump\/89306058007\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|\u2691u\">\u201cNo Kings\u201d demonstrations<\/a> against Trump.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s gotten unbearable, the stuff he\u2019s done,\u201d said Hoecker, a Navy veteran sporting a \u201cgrumpy old vet\u201d hat as he sat in camp chair in front of a golf cart parked with dozens of others at a demonstration organized by the Florida Democratic Party and The Villages Democratic Club.<\/p>\n<p>Hoecker dismissed Trump\u2019s tax cut for seniors, saying the president\u2019s big tax bill passed last year largely benefited the wealthiest individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Nearby, Dana Dandino held a sign jabbing Trump about the cost of grocery prices. They often have pensions and Medicare and other cushions against rising costs. Many drive electric golf carts and aren\u2019t as worried about gas prices.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the seniors she talks to are concerned about how the economy and debt could impact their grandchildren, she said, and about Trump\u2019s policies in general. Around 7,000 people came out for the most recent \u201cNo Kings\u201d anti-Trump protest in The Villages, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time Trump does something major people show up,\u201d he said, taking a break from passing out signs. Nearby someone held a large peace sign and another person <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2026\/04\/28\/what-does-8647-mean-what-to-know-about-james-comey-indictment\/89842950007\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|\u2691u\">had an \u201c86 47\u201d sign<\/a>, the message spelled out in seashells that former FBI Director James Comey shared in a social media post and now is being prosecuted for.<\/p>\n<p>Cars drove by honking in support, with the occasional heckler. One man leaned out his window to ask if \u201cya\u2019ll assassinators?\u201d, an apparent reference to the recent shooting at the White House Correspondents Association dinner that Trump attended.<\/p>\n<h2>Packed gymnasium<\/h2>\n<p>The line to get into Trump\u2019s rally at The Villages Charter School stretched out of the school parking lot and hundreds of yards down a sidewalk.<\/p>\n<p>Marie Hartz, 79, waited with a friend more than five hours to get into the rally. A retired kindergarten teacher from New York who bought her place in The Villages in 2004, Hartz said the wait to get into the rally was \u201cwell worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She raved about Trump, from his immigration policies to \u201ckeeping us safe from Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey would\u2019ve had the bomb,\u201d she said of Iran as she sat in a high school bleacher, waiting in a bejeweled American flag pattern hat for Trump to speak. \u201cI believe that. They\u2019re always saying death to America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hartz said \u201ceveryone feels the pinch\u201d of cost-of-living issues, but \u201cI\u2019m hoping that it\u2019s temporary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand people who are affected but my parents were affected during World War II,\u201d said Hartz, who skipped her regular card game for the rally. \u201cThey went without and so could we.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rising gas prices are for a \u201cgood cause,\u201d she said of the war.<\/p>\n<p>Trump assured The Villages crowd that oil prices would come \u201ccrashing down\u201d when the war is over, something he has struggled to accomplish as negotiations with Tehran appear to be stalled. I thought the stock market would go down by 25 percent, I thought that oil prices would be up much higher than they are right now,\u201d Trump said, adding: \u201cWe had to get this done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hartz and others at the rally played down polls showing Trump\u2019s approval rating plummeting. While Williams, the New Jersey retiree, strongly backs Trump, she conceded that the Iran war and costs are weighing on people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt could be better,\u201d Williams said of the cost of living. \u201cAnd if we can get out of this war . . . it would bring the cost of gasoline (down). Anytime the gasoline goes up, everything goes up, so that\u2019s very important. He\u2019s got to do that soon because you\u2019re making a lot of people unhappy and I\u2019m unhappy with that too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For other Villagers, the president&#8217;s visit didn&#8217;t interrupt their daily routine. Retiree Ken Fraser, 66, is a Trump fan but decided to hit the pickleball court Friday instead. On the courts, &#8220;you forget about everything going on in the world,&#8221; he said as he took a break between matches for a coffee.<\/p>\n<h2>Seniors critical to &#8216;MAGA base&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Trump\u2019s Florida rally was the latest in a series of trips aimed at selling his second term agenda and combating increasingly negative views of his administration ahead of the midterms.<\/p>\n<p>Backlash to Trump\u2019s policies has fueled a series of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2026\/03\/25\/emily-gregory-election-results-meaning-for-midterms-2026\/89312758007\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|\u2691u\">wins and overperformances by Democrats<\/a> in 2025 and 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s approval rating dipped to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/poll-trumps-approval-rating-hits-second-term-low-economy-iran-war-rcna331462\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\">a second-term low<\/a> in multiple recent surveys. Large majorities of voters in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/trump-approval-sinks-record-low-war-with-iran-drives-cost-of-living-concerns-2026-04-28\/\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\">a recent Reuters\/Ipsos survey<\/a> gave the president low marks for his handling of the economy, inflation and Iran, which has driven up gas prices and added to cost of living concerns.<\/p>\n<figure><img fetchpriority=\"high\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2026\/05\/01\/NTGS\/89900930007-gai-trump-152423.jpg?width=660&#038;height=495&#038;fit=crop&#038;format=pjpg&#038;auto=webp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2026\/05\/01\/NTGS\/89900930007-gai-trump-152423.jpg?width=1320&#038;height=990&#038;fit=crop&#038;format=pjpg&#038;auto=webp 2x\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"President Donald Trump winds up his speech at Middleton High School (The Villages Charter School) on May 1, 2026, in The Villages.\" previous-src=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2026\/05\/01\/NTGS\/89900930007-gai-trump-152423.jpg?width=660&#038;height=495&#038;fit=crop&#038;format=pjpg&#038;auto=webp\"><\/figure>\n<p>Even 41% of Republicans in the Reuters\/Ipsos survey said they disapprove of Trump\u2019s handling of cost-of-living.<\/p>\n<p>Senior voters are more likely to still approve of Trump\u2019s performance, though.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has been bleeding support among younger voters and voters of color. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/01\/politics\/cnn-poll-trump-approval-rating-economy\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\">A CNN survey from last month<\/a> found that while Trump\u2019s overall approval rating has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/12\/politics\/cnn-poll-trump-economy\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\">dropped 10 percentage points from a year ago,<\/a> it has dropped 19 points among voters age 18 to 34 and 11 points among voters of color.
