Wade four years ago, abortion providers have been bracing for attempts to further limit access to mifepristone \u2014 one of two pills involved in a medication abortion. The pill is in some ways a vulnerable target, since it\u2019s part of a drug safety program that restricts how it can be prescribed.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-8624ce\">The FDA has lifted several of those restrictions in the last decade \u2014 mostly recently, getting rid of a requirement for mifepristone to be dispensed in person. A lawsuit filed last year by the state of Louisiana seeks to bring the requirement back, which would in theory prohibit telehealth providers from sending the pills through the mail.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-61f17e\">I covered the chaos and confusion over the weekend after a federal appeals court reinstated the in-person dispensing requirement and abortion providers sought legal counsel about what to do next. It was in many ways a trial run of what could happen if Louisiana prevails, demonstrating that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/womens-health\/abortion-pill-mifepristone-mail-providers-plan-rcna343524?cid=eml_npd_nws_mrd_05062026&#038;tpcc=eml_npd_nws_mrd_05062026\" target=\"_self\"><strong>telehealth abortions probably won\u2019t grind to a halt<\/strong><\/a>. Still, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth asserted that the ceasefire was \u201cnot over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-466070\">Two U.S. commercial ships that crossed the strait on Monday had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/national-security\/us-commercial-ships-military-security-hormuz-transit-sources-say-rcna343742\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>U.S. military security teams aboard<\/strong><\/a> as Iran launched attacks against them, according to two U.S. officials.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-95e663\">Oil plunged and markets surged amid a report the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/business\/business-news\/oil-markets-gas-prices-450-us-iran-near-deal-end-war-hormuz-rcna343819\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>U.S. and Iran are nearing a deal to end the war <\/strong><\/a>as gas prices jumped past $4.50.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-812a13\">Officials in Washington and Tehran were working on \u201ca one-page memorandum of understanding to end the war and data-testid=\"inline-video\" id=\"anchor-6f99aa\"><picture class data-testid=\"picture\" data-flavor=\"focal\"><source media=\"(min-width: 1240px)\" ><source media=\"(min-width: 758px)\" ><source media=\"(min-width: 320px)\" ><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_focal-760x428,f_auto,q_auto:best\/mpx\/2704722219\/2026_05\/1778022877792_nn_cbe_hantavirus_cruise_passengers_260505_S3_1920x1080-lu6oey.jpg\" alt><\/picture><\/div>\n<p id=\"anchor-253944\">The cruise ship at the center of a deadly hantavirus outbreak faced a new challenge today as a local leader opposed allowing it to dock in Spain.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2ae5fd\">The news came as the medical evacuation of three sick passengers to the Netherlands took place this morning. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f28159\">Switzerland meanwhile confirmed that a man who had traveled on the ship was being treated for hantavirus in the Swiss city of Zurich.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1c8946\">Spain\u2019s national government in Madrid had said that the Canary Islands would accept the ship and it would begin a three-to-four-day journey there \u2014 but the archipelago\u2019s regional government opposed the move.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ee616f\">\u201cThis decision is not based on any technical criteria, nor is there sufficient information to reassure the public or guarantee their safety,\u201d regional leader Fernando Clavijo told radio station COPE.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-501cd4\">The WHO confirmed this outbreak is the Andes strain of the virus, which is known to be transmissible between people and is endemic in parts of Argentina, where the Hondius luxury cruise ship began its voyage.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-5436af\">The Hondius has almost 150 people on board and remains marooned off the coast of Cape Verde in west Africa, where it has been since at least Monday, after authorities refused it permission to dock.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-60183e\">Three passengers have died in the outbreak and the WHO said in an update today that there were so far eight cases, three of which are confirmed as hantavirus by laboratory testing.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0e9f3e\"><a
