President Donald Trump\u00a0<\/strong>got his retribution Tuesday night in Indiana against the state senators who defied his redistricting demands last year.<\/p>\n

It couldn\u2019t have\u00a0<\/strong>come at a better time for him.<\/p>\n

At least five<\/strong>\u00a0of the seven Republican state senators facing Trump-backed challengers lost renomination, including state Sen.\u00a0Travis Holdman,\u00a0<\/strong>the chair of the Indiana GOP Senate caucus.<\/p>\n

But at least<\/strong>\u00a0one of those Republicans who\u00a0voted against the redistricting<\/a>\u00a0proposal in December, state Sen.\u00a0Greg Goode,\u00a0<\/strong>won his primary. Another, state Sen.\u00a0Spencer Deery,\u00a0<\/strong>was in a race too close to call as of late Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

Ever since a majority of\u00a0<\/strong>Indiana state senators\u00a0<\/strong>rejected redistricting, Trump has vowed to make them pay at the ballot box.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s success on Tuesday<\/strong>\u00a0could have real\u00a0<\/strong>implications for southern states that are now considering whether to redistrict after the Supreme Court\u00a0gutted Section 2<\/a>\u00a0of the Voting Rights Act last month. Indiana proved there are serious consequences for any Republican state legislators resisting Trump on redistricting.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Tennessee<\/strong>\u00a0lawmakers are in the middle of a three-day\u00a0special session<\/a>\u00a0to determine whether to draw out Democratic Rep.\u00a0Steve Cohen\u00a0<\/strong>in Memphis. And legislators in South Carolina could also erase the district of Democratic Rep.\u00a0Jim Clyburn.\u00a0<\/strong>Alabama and Louisiana Republicans are working on redistricting plans, too.<\/p>\n

GOP leaders in\u00a0<\/strong>the South Carolina legislature\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0they\u2019re unsure they have the requisite votes for a new map. But the results in Indiana may nudge some of those lawmakers toward redistricting.<\/p>\n

Ohio primaries.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Rep.\u00a0Marcy Kaptur\u00a0<\/strong>(D-Ohio) will get a rematch with the man she beat last cycle. Republican\u00a0Derek Merrin\u00a0<\/strong>won over a crowded primary field for the nomination.<\/p>\n

A few noteworthy\u00a0<\/strong>things about this race: redistricting put Kaptur\u00a0<\/strong>in a slightly tougher seat this cycle. And a third-party candidate helped Kaptur likely prevail in 2024. But the environment is looking much better for Democrats in 2026.<\/p>\n

In southwestern\u00a0<\/strong>Ohio, Republican\u00a0Eric Conroy\u00a0<\/strong>will take on Democratic Rep.\u00a0Greg Landsman.\u00a0<\/strong>And Democrat\u00a0Brian Poindexter\u00a0<\/strong>will face Rep.\u00a0Max Miller\u00a0<\/strong>(R-Ohio).<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
