Negotiations deadlocked and a ceasefire on a precipice.<\/p>\n

That appeared to be the situation Monday between the United States and Iran<\/a>, with both sides labeling each other\u2019s peace proposals unacceptable after exchanging fire over the weekend<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That impasse raised the threat of renewed conflict and left the global economy imperiled by the standoff over the Strait of Hormuz, a tense backdrop for President Donald Trump\u2019s state visit this week to China.<\/p>\n

Oil prices rose early Monday, with the Brent Crude international benchmark above $103 a barrel, as Tehran insisted its latest offer was \u201creasonable and generous\u201d hours after Trump dismissed it as<\/a> \u201ctotally unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Iranian Foreign Ministry accused the U.S. of \u201cone-sided views\u201d and \u201cmaking unreasonable\u201d and \u201cexcessive demands,\u201d spokesman Esmail Baghaei told a news conference. \u201cEverything we proposed,\u201d he said, was \u201creasonable and generous not only for Iran\u2019s national interests, but also for the good and well-being of the region and the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

That came after Trump\u2019s assessment on Sunday that the response was \u201cTOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have just read the response from Iran\u2019s so-called \u2018Representatives,\u2019\u201d Trump posted on Truth Social<\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t like it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump did not give details of the proposal.<\/p>\n

Baghaei said that Iran\u2019s offer included stopping \u201cmaritime piracy against Iranian ships\u201d \u2014 a reference to Washington blockading Iranian ports. He also called for releasing \u201cassets belonging to the Iranian people which have been unjustly frozen for years in foreign banks due to American pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n

And he said that Iran wanted \u201csafe passage through the Strait of Hormuz\u201d and \u201cestablishing security and peace throughout the region, including Lebanon,\u201d where Israel has continued attacks it says are targeting militant group Hezbollah despite a ceasefire.<\/p>\n

Trump last week abandoned a short-lived plan for military vessels to escort merchant ships through the Strait of Hormuz, known as \u201cProject Freedom.\u201d <\/p>\n

The two sides traded fire repeatedly in the following days, with the U.S. saying its destroyers launched \u201cself-defense strikes\u201d after they came under attack. <\/p>\n

The U.S. has insisted those exchanges do not mean an end to the ceasefire, more than a month after the temporary deal that was initially intended to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

In a phone interview Friday with NBC News, Trump said \u201cNo\u201d when asked if the conflict with Iran was over. That was echoed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who told CBS News\u2019 \u201c60 Minutes\u201d on Sunday that the conflict was \u201cnot over,\u201d and if negotiations were not successful in extracting nuclear material from Iran then \u201cwe can reengage them militarily.\u201d<\/p>\n

That speaks to a key sticking point in the talks: the U.S.-Israeli demand that Iran\u2019s stockpile of highly enriched uranium be removed from the country.<\/p>\n

Though Iran has always denied wanting to build a bomb, it has enriched the material beyond civilian needs, accelerating those efforts after Trump tore up the previous nuclear agreement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The U.S. has meanwhile continued its own blockade of Iran\u2019s ports, but the Iranian regime could likely withstand a naval blockade for months, energy industry analysts and two Western officials familiar with intelligence assessments told NBC News.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
