While companies are receiving those refunds, it appears that many don\u2019t intend to share those funds with consumers, who paid for much of the tariffs through higher prices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe\u2019re the ones who paid it. We\u2019re the ones that need to get it back, and so any system that doesn\u2019t get it to the little guy doesn\u2019t get it to the right place,\u201d Minnesota State Auditor Julie Blaha said on a press call Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>She was among eight Democratic state fiscal leaders who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1ZFCDuBaNArbvQbRy7Cyl2SA-0atbV364\/view\" target=\"_blank\"><span>urged the White House<\/span><\/a><span> to publicly disclose which firms are receiving tariff refunds and to ensure consumers are not left out.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-secret=\"B3JsgJW4Kz\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stateline.org\/2025\/04\/21\/trump-touts-manufacturing-while-undercutting-state-efforts-to-help-factories\/\">Trump touts manufacturing while undercutting state efforts to help factories<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Blaha said government agencies are well equipped for that task, noting the public websites set up during the coronavirus pandemic that disclosed which companies received pandemic grants and loans. There is currently no public database of tariff refund requests or agency determinations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe\u2019re not asking the federal government to do anything they don\u2019t ask of states and local entities or nonprofits to do when they are using some of their funds,\u201d she said. \u201cWe know how to do this kind of oversight.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Blaha said transparency is particularly important since the White House is opposed to repaying the tariffs in the first place. The president has said his administration would \u201cfight\u201d the refund effort, though reports indicate more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us-anticipates-tariff-refund-payments-355-billion-may-11-2026-05-12\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span>$35 billion<\/span><\/a><span> has already been sent to companies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Illinois State Treasurer Mike Frerichs said American consumers are suffering from high prices as the president and his inner circle <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/a-reporter-at-large\/trumps-profiteering-hits-four-billion-dollars\" target=\"_blank\"><span>enrich themselves.<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cNo one trusts the federal government anymore,\u201d he said. \u201cThey feel like the deck is stacked against them, and this example just adds further proof to their beliefs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>State leaders estimated the tariffs cost Illinois consumers nearly $9 billion. But the current process does not ensure that those funds will be returned to consumers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-secret=\"fdhEnTUThY\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stateline.org\/2026\/04\/01\/democratic-ags-file-100th-lawsuit-against-trump\/\">Democratic AGs file 100th lawsuit against Trump<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cTrump\u2019s system is opaque by design, with no guarantee of the $9 billion owed to Illinois families and businesses returning home,\u201d Frerichs said Wednesday. \u201c\u2026Millions of Americans and businesses deserve every penny back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsfromthestates.com\/article\/trump-vows-new-tariffs-attacks-supreme-court-justices-after-ruling\" target=\"_blank\"><span>The president blasted<\/span><\/a><span> conservative Supreme Court justices who nixed his tariffs, saying their decision earlier this year was a \u201cdisgrace to our nation\u201d as well as \u201cunpatriotic and disloyal to our Constitution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He has remained committed to tariffs on foreign imports, believing that they will incentivize manufacturers to build products in the United States rather than overseas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After the Supreme Court loss, Trump ordered a 10% global tariff, which has also been challenged in court.
