No, no, not at all,\u201d Trump told PBS News.<\/p>\n<p>Those comments followed similar remarks on Monday, when Trump <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/liveblog\/2026\/5\/24\/live-trump-says-iran-deal-not-fully-negotiated-yet\">said<\/a> the enriched uranium \u201cwill either be immediately turned over to the United States to be brought home and destroyed or, preferably, in conjunction and coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran, destroyed in place\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But Tehran has said it would not let go of the estimated 440kg (970 lbs) of nuclear material it possesses.<\/p>\n<p>More than one month ago, Trump <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/4\/17\/what-has-trump-said-ahead-of-possible-us-iran-talks-and-what-could-it-mean\">claimed that Iran<\/a> had agreed to allow the US to retrieve the uranium at a \u201cleisurely pace\u201d, but Tehran was quick to deny the statement.<\/p>\n<p>The back-and-forth over the future of Iran\u2019s nuclear programme remains one of many points of divergence in the ceasefire negotiations, as the US and Iran seek an end to the war started more than 12 weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>The two sides have also clashed over issues including the continuation of US sanctions against Iran, the US blockade on Tehran\u2019s ports and control over the Strait of Hormuz, a major trade artery.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"stalled-diplomacy\">Stalled diplomacy<\/h2>\n<p>At his cabinet meeting, Trump reiterated several statements he has made since the start of the war, including claims that Iran\u2019s navy and air force are gone. He also once again sought to depict Iran as a fallen enemy, subdued by US military might.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey want very much to make a deal,\u201d Trump said of Iran. But he added that the current negotiations had fallen short of his expectations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not satisfied with it, but we will be. We will be. Either that or we\u2019ll have to just finish the job,\u201d Trump said, suggesting further military action.<\/p>\n<p>The US and Israel launched a war against Iran on February 28 without direct provocation, killing the country\u2019s Supreme Leader <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/2\/28\/ayatollah-ali-khamenei-the-leader-who-shaped-irans-defiance\">Ali Khamenei<\/a> and several top officials, as well as hundreds of civilians.<\/p>\n<p>Iran responded by carrying out missile and drone attacks against Israel and across the entire region. It also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/video\/newsfeed\/2026\/5\/26\/rubio-says-strait-of-hormuz-will-open-one-way-or-the-other\">closed the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, a waterway through which more than 20 percent of the world\u2019s oil trade passes.<\/p>\n<p>The blockade has sent energy prices soaring across the world and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/4\/28\/trump-approval-dips-to-record-low-amid-iran-war-inflation-woes-poll\">fuelled inflation<\/a> in the US. The Trump administration, meanwhile, has not been able to reopen the waterway by force.<\/p>\n<p>But on Wednesday, Trump stressed that Iran cannot \u201cout-wait\u201d him in the hope that he would back down. He framed the blockade as a tactic to undermine his domestic support ahead of the crucial midterm elections in the US.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t care about the midterms,\u201d Trump said. \u201cPeople understand it. They know that \u2014 very simple \u2014 Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump also batted aside the prospect of a short-term deal that would allow Iran and Oman to jointly control the strait, even hinting at a military response if Oman were to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u200aOman will behave just like everybody else, or we\u2019ll have to blow \u2019em up. They understand that. They\u2019ll be fine,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>While Trump has framed the deaths of Khamenei and other Iranian leaders as proof of leadership change, the war has failed to collapse Iran\u2019s governing system.<\/p>\n<p>Khamenei was replaced by his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/3\/9\/trump-slams-mojtaba-khameneis-appointment-as-iran-projects-defiance\">son Mojtaba<\/a>, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) continues to play a major role in Iran\u2019s political and military establishment.<\/p>\n<p>A temporary ceasefire came into effect on April 8, but efforts to bring the crisis to a resolution have stalled, despite Trump\u2019s assertion that Iran is weakened and desperate to make a deal with the US.<\/p>\n<p>However, there was renewed optimism about a possible agreement when Trump announced on Saturday that a deal was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/5\/23\/trump-says-iran-agreement-largely-negotiated-still-awaiting-finalisation\">being finalised<\/a>, after speaking to regional leaders.<\/p>\n<p>It remains unclear if either party has offered concessions to secure an agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Trump, for instance, told the cabinet meeting that he \u201cwouldn\u2019t be comfortable\u201d with the prospect of Iran\u2019s uranium being transferred to Russia or China, instead of the US.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"us-says-iranian-report-fabricated\">US says Iranian report \u2018fabricated\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Earlier on Wednesday, the White House dismissed a report by Iran\u2019s state TV on the details of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war.<\/p>\n<p>The Iranian report said the draft deal would require the lifting of the US naval blockade on Iran in return for allowing ships to pass through Hormuz at pre-war levels within 30 days.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), military ships would not be part of the agreement, and the management of the waterway \u2014 including ship inspections and possible fees \u2014 would remain under the control of Iran in coordination with Oman.<\/p>\n<p>But the White House was quick to throw cold water on the Iranian claims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis report from Iranian controlled media is not true and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/5\/26\/anticipation-in-iran-as-talks-with-us-continue-amid-attacks-war-of-words\">the MOU<\/a> they \u2018released\u2019 is a complete fabrication. Nobody should believe what Iranian state media is putting out. FACTS MATTER,\u201d the Trump administration said in a social media post.<\/p>\n<p>The White House did not specify what was not accurate about the report, and it did not provide details about the potential agreement with Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Trump said on Wednesday that the US will not accept Iranian control of Hormuz. \u201cWe\u2019ll watch over it, but nobody\u2019s going to control it.
