the two sides would finalise an agreement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>The deal would reportedly extend the ceasefire for 60 days and launch talks on the future of Iran&#8217;s nuclear programme.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Earlier on Thursday, US officials told the BBC that the two countries had agreed a framework of a deal, pending the approval of Trump and Iran&#8217;s leadership.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>But Iran&#8217;s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported the deal had not been finalised or confirmed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Speaking on Thursday evening, Vance said negotiators were &#8220;going back and forth on a couple of language points&#8221;, which include the &#8220;question of enrichment&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re not there yet, but we&#8217;re very close and we&#8217;re going to keep on working at it,&#8221; he told reporters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>The US has long demanded that Iran stop producing highly enriched uranium and dispose of its existing stockpile, which in theory could be used to create nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Vance struck an optimistic tone as he spoke to reporters in Washington DC, saying the US believed the Iranians were negotiating in &#8220;good faith&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Since the initial ceasefire between the US and Iran came into effect on 8 April, Trump has suggested &#8211; repeatedly &#8211; that the two sides are close to a deal and that negotiations are progressing, but so far there have been no substantive results.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>The president is facing mounting pressure to end the war, including from Gulf state allies, Democrats who oppose it, and some Republicans in Congress who have raised concerns about the length of the conflict.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Thursday&#8217;s conflicting reports on a possible deal underscored how fluid the negotiations remain.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Both countries contradicted each other&#8217;s claims and offered few details on the reported proposal, raising questions again about how close the sides actually are to ending hostilities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Trump and other officials have warned that &#8220;option B&#8221; &#8211; a return to combat operations &#8211; is still on the table.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Extending the ceasefire, meanwhile, would allow US and Iranian teams to discuss the far more complicated and technical issues at play, particularly about Iran&#8217;s nuclear programme and its remaining stockpile of highly enriched uranium. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Trump had suggested that the US could take it, or, together with Iran, dilute it in place or in a third location.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Reports say the purported deal could allow &#8220;unrestricted&#8221; passage through the Strait of Hormuz, and that Iran would have 30 days to remove mines from the narrow shipping passageway.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>The US would also lift its blockade, and issue sanction waivers to allow Iran to resume selling oil.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Axios, which first reported a tentative agreement between the US and Iran on Thursday, said that Trump had been briefed on the proposal but did not immediately sign off on it and would take a couple of days to consider it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>On Wednesday, Iranian state media reported elements of what they described as an unofficial draft of a 14-point memorandum of understanding between the two countries.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>The report included the lifting of Washington&#8217;s naval blockade of Iranian ports, the withdrawal of US forces from the &#8220;vicinity of Iran&#8221;, and the restoration of non-military traffic through the Strait of Hormuz with Iran and Oman in control of the management and routing of vessels.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>The White House called the purported memorandum draft a &#8220;complete fabrication&#8221;. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>One-fifth of the world&#8217;s liquefied natural gas and oil normally pass through the Strait of Hormuz, and its closure has impacted global fuel trade.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Leading the White House briefing earlier on Thursday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent declined to confirm that an agreement had been reached.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s always a mistake to get out ahead of the president,&#8221; he said, &#8220;and it is all going to be the president&#8217;s decision&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Asked about whether any eventual peace deal includes &#8220;reconstruction&#8221;
