That\u2019s who\u2019s getting me elected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b815a1\">Pratt, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/elections\/spencer-pratt-karen-bass-nithya-raman-los-angeles-mayor-election-rcna344477\" target=\"_blank\">has focused his insurgent campaign<\/a> against Mayor Karen Bass on calling for better wildfire management and combating homelessness, added that he\u2019s chosen not to comment on Trump or national politics on principle throughout his campaign.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f05208\">\u201cMy race is a local race. I don\u2019t care what\u2019s going on in the, in the national politics, in other states. I am running for a local position,\u201d Pratt, 42, who gained political prominence last year by criticizing city and state leaders online after his house burned in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/numbers-tell-story-los-angeles-wildfires-one-year-later-rcna252514\" target=\"_blank\">destructive Los Angeles wildfires<\/a>,<strong> <\/strong>told \u201cNBC Nightly News\u201d anchor Tom Llamas.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c31cfb\">The president last week told reporters about Pratt, \u201cI\u2019d like to see him do well. He\u2019s a character,\u201d adding, \u201cI assume he probably supports me,\u201d and, \u201cI heard he\u2019s a big MAGA person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0874c2\">\u201cThis, this right here, what you\u2019re doing, you having this conversation is what\u2019s destroyed local elections,\u201d Pratt told Llamas when pushed on a potential Trump endorsement.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-7d9e7d\">\u201cPeople don\u2019t care. In L.A., they want to feel safe, they don\u2019t want to step in human poop,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t need to have personal opinions about anybody that doesn\u2019t affect them stepping in human poop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-408dfc\">Pratt\u2019s remarks come just days before the June 2 mayoral primary election, where candidates from all political parties are running on the same ballot. If a candidate wins a majority of the vote on Tuesday, they\u2019ll win the election outright. If no candidate wins outright next week, the top two vote-getters will advance to a November runoff.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-5df99d\">The race has tightened in recent weeks between Bass, Pratt and Los Angeles Councilwoman Nithya Raman. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbclosangeles.com\/news\/local\/gavin-newsom-karen-bass-election-endorsement\/3896099\/\" target=\"_blank\">University of California, Berkeley-L.A. Times poll <\/a>out Thursday had Bass leading the pack with support from 26% of likely voters, Raman in second at 25% and Pratt third at 22%. The survey puts all three candidates within the margin of error.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d4b0ec\">Pratt, who came to fame as a reality TV star on the 2000s MTV show \u201cThe Hills,\u201d is running as a Republican and has drawn comparisons to Trump. He became involved in politics after last year\u2019s widespread wildfires in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood in Los Angeles, where Pratt and his wife lost their home.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-5fec54\">He spent months after the wildfires railing against Bass and California Gov. Gavin Newsom for their mismanagement of the fires.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f56030\">The idea of running for mayor, Pratt said Thursday, only arose in the aftermath of his online virality following the fires.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-60c137\">\u201cI got on this mission, it was never to run for mayor. I started this to expose the corruption and the negligence of our city leaders, and when I got to the farthest distance I could, where I proved they were obstructing justice, altering after-action reports after the fire, and there was nothing more they could do, that\u2019s when I organically got in the race, because no one else was going to run,\u201d Pratt said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9512e8\">He added that campaigning for the post hasn\u2019t been \u201cfun,\u201d and that he and his family members have suffered security risks and death threats.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-eb9c60\">The reality TV star \u2014 who was once known as TV\u2019s \u201cbad boyfriend\u201d \u2014 also dismissed concerns that voters cared about his eccentric past reality TV persona, his love for healing crystals or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/07\/05\/how-spencer-pratt-and-heidi-montag-blew-10-million.html\" target=\"_blank\">personal financial mismanagement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2b9f62\">\u201cThey don\u2019t need to worry about what I was before my house burned down and before I got in the race,\u201d Pratt said, adding, \u201cI don\u2019t need to convince anybody about my past, I\u2019m living in the present. I\u2019m speaking about what everyone sees with their own eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-025453\">He called himself the \u201clook-around candidate,\u201d who was urging voters to take a look at the wildfire destruction and homelessness crisis around them and vote for change, rather than sticking with the status quo.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-60217f\">The former \u201cHills\u201d star also expressed disdain for politicians, saying his concerns about California\u2019s current leadership are what led him to run.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-8d756f\">\u201cI don\u2019t admire any politicians. I don\u2019t like politicians. I didn\u2019t want to be a politician. I didn\u2019t want to be a mayor. I\u2019m forced into this because politicians are failing us as taxpayers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a2db57\">In the interview, Pratt also outlined some of his policy priorities, which include increasing water reserves in Los Angeles to help firefighters more quickly manage spreading wildfires, and increasing firefighter hiring and retention.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6c32e2\">The former reality TV star added that he planned to secure private funding from billionaires to build a campus on federal lands to house homeless drug addicts and assist with their treatment.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a5eff7\">\u201cI went to Washington with all the people that build the prefabricated homes. It\u2019s actually cheaper to build an entire city of prefabricated homes with treatment facilities and medical [centers] than just launder money into buildings in L.A.,\u201d Pratt said, adding, \u201cI have plenty of very successful philanthropic billionaires that I\u2019ve met with that would love to invest in this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ec4510\">He added that this could be a policy idea where he could partner with the Trump administration, despite not having spoken to the president about this plan.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-07d30c\">\u201cI know the federal government would want to partner to get these addicts the treatment and to have the money that\u2019s being laundered through the NGOs stop, and they will know that these are results, where it\u2019s going to be mandatory treatment,\u201d Pratt said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-555d1d\">He also pledged to make life more affordable for all Angelenos by removing layers of bureaucracy to make it easier to build more housing.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-952363\">\u201cYou can only make things more affordable by putting more money in people\u2019s pockets, and the way I\u2019m going to do that is get rid of all this red tape,\u201d Pratt said. \u201cThe buildings in Los Angeles, it takes years to build any affordable housing.
