The board quickly elected Trump as chair instead.<\/p>\n<p>But some of the biggest backlash came in December, when the board went a step further and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/12\/18\/white-house-says-kennedy-center-board-has-voted-to-rename-after-trump\">voted to rename the building<\/a>\u00a0\u201cThe Donald J Trump and the John F Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Within a day, construction crews were seen outside the arts centre, <a href=\"http:\/\/aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/12\/20\/trumps-name-added-to-kennedy-center-exterior-one-day-after-vote-to-rename\">adding Trump\u2019s name<\/a> to the outside of the edifice.<\/p>\n<p>Critics immediately denounced the effort as a violation of the 1964 law, not to mention a sign of disrespect towards the late Kennedy.<\/p>\n<p>Amid public pressure and a string of cancellations from performers, Trump announced in February he would <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/2\/2\/trump-to-close-kennedy-center-for-renovations-amid-backlash-from-performers\">shutter the arts centre for two years<\/a>, starting in July. He cited renovations as his rationale for the sudden closure.<\/p>\n<p>US Representative Joyce Beatty, a Kennedy Center trustee, sued to stop the closure from happening. She also sought the removal of Trump\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4611629\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4611629\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/afp_6a1a22e1d461-1780097761.jpg?w=770&#038;resize=770%2C513&#038;quality=80\" alt=\"(FILES) A general view shows the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC on January 10, 2026.\" fetchpriority=\"low\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4611629\">Friday\u2019s court ruling requires Trump to remove his name from all Kennedy Center signage and materials within 14 days [File: AFP]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"inside-the-court-s-ruling\">Inside the court\u2019s ruling<\/h2>\n<p>In Friday\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.dcd.287972\/gov.uscourts.dcd.287972.50.0_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ruling<\/a>, Judge Cooper \u2014 an appointee of former President Barack Obama \u2014 sided with Beatty\u2019s requests.<\/p>\n<p>He ordered that Trump\u2019s name must be removed from the theatre\u2019s facade, as well as any other signage or official materials, within 14 days, citing the 1964 law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Kennedy Center\u2019s organic statute makes crystal clear that the Center is to be named for President Kennedy, and it cannot bear any other formal name or public memorial based on the Board\u2019s unilateral say-so,\u201d Cooper wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongress gave the Kennedy Center its name, and only Congress can change it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cooper also overturned the Trump-led board\u2019s decision to strip trustees like Beatty of the right to vote on Kennedy Center matters. Beatty is one of several bipartisan trustees who have a seat on the board by virtue of an act of Congress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf trustees presumptively possess the right to vote, what, if anything, authorizes the Board to unilaterally strip certain trustees of voting rights?\u201d Cooper asked in his decision, striking down the Trump-era policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbsent Congressional authorization, the Board may not deprive a duly-appointed Kennedy Center trustee of her right to vote on Board matters on which all other trustees are entitled to vote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the last part of his 94-page decision, Cooper turned his attention to the Kennedy Center\u2019s imminent closure.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed to statements and plans from Trump administration officials touting the use of the performing arts facility before the July closure date, saying they undermined the assertion that the building was somehow hazardous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFormer Kennedy Center President [Richard] Grenell emphasized that the Center would be one of the \u2018premiere spots\u2019 for America\u2019s 250th celebration \u2014 quite a concerning idea if the Center is as dangerous as the Defendants now represent,\u201d Cooper wrote, alluding to events scheduled for the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>He later added, \u201cUp until February 1, the Center was planning to proceed apace with some form of phased construction and cited no safety concerns about that plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While closing the Kennedy Center is within the board\u2019s powers, Cooper concluded that the board had likely violated its duty to administer the centre \u201cas a prudent person would\u201d under the law.<\/p>\n<p>He therefore issued a temporary injunction against the centre\u2019s closure. \u201cThe trustees might have assessed the propriety of closure in a number of prudent ways. The president pledged to transfer oversight of the facility to Congress, under whose mandate the centre already operates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are going to be working with Congress to transfer this failing Institution back to them so they can make a determination as to what to do with it,\u201d Trump wrote.<\/p>\n<p>He also blasted Cooper as a partisan actor who had treated him \u201cunfairly\u201d, echoing similar criticisms he had levied against other judges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJudge Cooper should be ashamed of himself! I cannot be involved with a situation where danger to the Public is allowed to flourish in plain and open sight,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnless I am free to do what I do better than anyone else, bring this Institution back, physically, financially, and artistically, I have no interest in continuing what could only be a hopeless journey into \u2018NEVER NEVER LAND.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beatty, meanwhile, applauded the ruling as a victory against unchecked power, unfettered by the law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Kennedy Center is an institution that belongs to the American people, not to Donald Trump,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepBeatty\/status\/2060465245026472231?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has desecrated this sacred memorial for his own vanity.
