{"id":13306,"date":"2026-05-30T00:28:20","date_gmt":"2026-05-30T00:28:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wpinitiate.com\/echo-test\/demo973e36f5\/2026\/05\/30\/judge-halts-trump-anti-weaponization-fund-after-jan-6-prosecutor-sues-nbc-news\/"},"modified":"2026-05-30T00:28:20","modified_gmt":"2026-05-30T00:28:20","slug":"judge-halts-trump-anti-weaponization-fund-after-jan-6-prosecutor-sues-nbc-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wpinitiate.com\/echo-test\/demo973e36f5\/2026\/05\/30\/judge-halts-trump-anti-weaponization-fund-after-jan-6-prosecutor-sues-nbc-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge halts Trump \u2018anti-weaponization\u2019 fund after Jan. 6 prosecutor sues &#8211; NBC News"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p id=\"anchor-f6f7aa\">A federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration\u2019s $1.8 billion \u201canti-weaponization\u201d fund, created as part of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/doj-agrees-not-pursue-tax-claims-trump-part-irs-deal-rcna345973\" target=\"_blank\">unprecedented settlement with the president<\/a>, his family and the Trump Organization.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-7b253e\">U.S. District Judge Leonie M. Brinkema of the Eastern District of Virginia entered the order Friday after a Jan. 6 prosecutor and others <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/jan-6-prosecutor-trump-administration-targets-sue-weaponization-fund-rcna346523\" target=\"_blank\">sued to block the fund last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f8931a\">The fund is being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/trumps-18b-fund-isnt-officially-open-yet-hasnt-stopped-applications-rcna346300\" target=\"_blank\">operated out of the Justice Department<\/a>. Both Democrats and Republicans have criticized the fund. Opponents have labeled it a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/john-adams-quote-projected-doj-building-protest-18b-fund-rcna345934\" target=\"_blank\">massive \u201cslush fund\u201d for President Donald Trump\u2019s allies<\/a>. Its existence has alarmed some legal experts, in part because there will be very little public oversight over how it is managed. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/republicans-cancel-votes-fight-trumps-anti-weaponization-fund-rcna346113\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Republican leaders last week punted a vote on a GOP package<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/senate-republican-budget-funding-ice-border-patrol-democrats-rcna341445\" target=\"_blank\">fund ICE and the Border Patrol<\/a> until June in part because of concerns over the fund, NBC News reported.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2dcd35\">The Trump administration cannot take any further action on the fund while legal motions are pending, \u201cwhich includes the transferring of money to the fund; the consideration of any claims submitted to the fund; and the disbursing of any funds from the fund,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.vaed.596617\/gov.uscourts.vaed.596617.31.0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">according to the order.<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6818a2\">The judge said the order was necessary to \u201censure that no funds are irreversibly disbursed from the Anti-Weaponization Fund\u201d while there are motions pending to block the distribution of funds. She set a hearing for June 12. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-599d31\">Democracy Forward President and CEO Skye Perryman, who heads the group that filed the suit, said the judge\u2019s order \u201crecognized the urgent need to prevent taxpayer dollars from being distributed through a secretive and unprecedented political compensation scheme\u201d that needed to be fully reviewed by a court.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-31649e\">\u201cThis is a victory for transparency, the rule of law, and the American people,\u201d Perryman said in a statement. \u201cNo administration has the authority to spend public money through a political rewards program that Congress never authorized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e23da4\">The process to apply for money can\u2019t officially begin until five commissioners are chosen to decide how the money is doled out, though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/doj-official-told-gop-ally-big-payouts-coming-jan-6-defendants-rcna343847\" target=\"_blank\">people who claim they were targeted by the government have already requested money<\/a>. The White House referred questions to the DOJ.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-8d688c\">\u201cThe Department remains extremely confident in the legality of the Anti-Weaponization Fund which is supported by ample precedent, including Obama-era settlements,\u201d a Justice Department spokesperson said in a statement. \u201cWe will not allow the policy preferences of judges to interfere with our efforts to provide restitution to victims of lawfare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-29b5eb\">It\u2019s also not clear how people would formally apply. The pool of possible applicants is substantial, according to the DOJ.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-21a374\">Andrew Floyd, who headed a task force in the now-closed Capitol Siege Section of the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the District of Columbia, before he was dismissed in July, filed a declaration in connection with the lawsuit on Thursday. Floyd prosecuted cases related to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d92f21\">The Trump administration \u201cis gifting the people I helped investigate <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.vaed.596617\/gov.uscourts.vaed.596617.25.2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">and prosecute after January 6<\/a>\u201d access to what he described as an illegally created process designed to \u201crush money out the door to perceived political allies, while treating me and people like me as disfavored enemies.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration\u2019s $1.8 billion \u201canti-weaponization\u201d fund, created as part of an unprecedented settlement with the president, his family and the Trump Organization.
