When we have confirmed access, the full article content will load.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<section name=\"articleBody\">\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<p>President-elect Donald Trump is still a week away from taking office, but his musings about coercing Canada to join the United States while acquiring Greenland and the Panama Canal \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/07\/us\/politics\/trump-panama-canal-greenland.html\" title>declining at one point to rule out the use of military force<\/a> in those two particular cases \u2014 have made for a surreal prologue to his second administration. It\u2019s a fixation that has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/08\/world\/asia\/trump-greenland-panama.html\" title>set world leaders on edge<\/a> and forced congressional Republicans into the odd position of insisting that the incoming president is not planning to storm the Arctic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States is not going to invade another country,\u201d Senator James Lankford, Republican of Oklahoma, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/meet-the-press\/video\/sen-lankford-says-he-ll-vote-yes-on-tulsi-gabbard-for-director-of-national-intelligence-229083205929\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said yesterday<\/a> on \u201cMeet the Press<em>.\u201d <\/em>Trump, Lankford insisted, was simply making \u201cbold\u201d statements intended on getting \u201ceveryone to the table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whether the words are a negotiating tactic or something more, the president-elect\u2019s expressed desire to expand the nation\u2019s footprint reflects an urge that has animated much of his career in the public eye: to make whatever he controls as big as possible.<\/p>\n<p>In that sense, Trump\u2019s talk of taking control of Greenland and seizing Canada by \u201ceconomic force\u201d can be viewed less as an articulation of a foreign policy objective than as an extension of an ethos that goes back to his single-minded efforts to expand his businesses through a series of acquisitions in the 1980s.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<p>In tonight\u2019s newsletter, we\u2019ll explain why.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"link-41f293b\"><span><strong>Painting other people\u2019s houses<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The prime minister of Greenland <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/13\/world\/europe\/greenland-trump-business.html\" title>says the territory wants to work more closely with the United States on certain issues<\/a>, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/08\/world\/asia\/greenland-trump-denmark.html\" title>Greenlanders<\/a>, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/07\/world\/americas\/panama-canal-trump.html\" title>Panamanians<\/a>, have expressed little interest in actually handing their territory over to Americans.<\/p>\n<p>As a businessman, Trump, though, has often paid little mind to the people standing in the way of his desired expansions, although they have sometimes found ways to stop him.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div id=\"optimistic-truncator-a11y\" tabindex=\"-1\">\n<hr>\n<p>Thank you for your patience while we verify access.
