For one speech, Hegseth was paid $150,000 by the American Legislative Exchange Council in February 2023.     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5vnaqk8001k3b6nn5q5y9h1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             The former Fox News TV personality, whose deal with the network ended in November, also brought in royalties from three books he has written, including his latest book, \u201cThe War on Warriors.\u201d     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5vnaqk8001l3b6nu4p3sd86@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             Hegseth held stock in several major defense contractors as well, including Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Honeywell, according to his financial disclosure. The value of the assets was relatively small, listed between $1,001 and $15,000 for each of the companies.     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5vnaqk8001m3b6nog3i1cof@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             Hegseth also held between $15,001 and $50,000 of Bitcoin.     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5vl4sw800143b6nqr6grblc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             In the list of incomes, Hegseth disclosed that he was paid $61,000 over four engagements with Helping a Hero, a non-profit organization that builds specially designed houses for service members injured in the war on terror. Hegseth listed three engagements in 2023 and one last year. So, it\u2019s important we don\u2019t rush these hearings without examining the record first,\u201d Schumer warned, calling these hearings the \u201copening salvo for holding the Trump administration accountable to the public.\u201d     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5vjnkj5000n3b6nvl42vlql@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             In particular, the top Senate Democrat noted that the allegations against Pete Hegseth, Trump\u2019s choice to run the Pentagon, are \u201cdeeply troubling.\u201d     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5vjnkj5000o3b6nbknjnsfd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             \u201cIf there is any Cabinet position that needs a steady and drama-free individual, it is certainly secretary of defense, unfortunately Mr. Hegseth\u2019s background is deeply troubling \u2013 to put it generously,\u201d said Schumer.     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5viwa0n00013b6nvav9x02f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             Hegseth, whose Senate confirmation hearings begin January 14 in front of the Senate Armed Services Committee, has faced a tough confirmation process as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/12\/05\/politics\/pete-hegseth-private-turmoil-invs\/index.html\">allegations emerged<\/a> related to his workplace behavior and treatment of women, including a surfaced sexual assault accusation from 2017. Hegseth has denied wrongdoing, and no charges were brought over the 2017 allegation.     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5vjnkj5000p3b6n9wxdhi2l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             Schumer added: \u201cThese are such serious accusations for such an important job.
