{"id":573,"date":"2025-03-06T03:22:51","date_gmt":"2025-03-06T03:22:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wpinitiate.com\/echo-test\/demo973e36f5\/2025\/03\/06\/canadian-stores-pull-u-s-liquor-from-shelves-as-trumps-tariffs-take-effect-nbc-news\/"},"modified":"2025-03-06T03:22:51","modified_gmt":"2025-03-06T03:22:51","slug":"canadian-stores-pull-u-s-liquor-from-shelves-as-trumps-tariffs-take-effect-nbc-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wpinitiate.com\/echo-test\/demo973e36f5\/2025\/03\/06\/canadian-stores-pull-u-s-liquor-from-shelves-as-trumps-tariffs-take-effect-nbc-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian stores pull U.S. liquor from shelves as Trump\u2019s tariffs take effect &#8211; NBC News"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>As the Trump administration\u2019s tariffs on Canada and Mexico went into effect Tuesday, Canadians discovered empty shelves where U.S. liquor products were once stocked.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Canadian social media users posted photos and videos of stores across the country seemingly pulling U.S.-made liquor from their inventories.<\/p>\n<p>Joshua Gariepy, a university student in Quebec, posted a photo Wednesday showing empty shelves in a store in Quebec, where U.S. liquor products were once displayed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me, this photo perfectly captures the situation: the \u2018Products of USA\u2019 sign remains, but the shelves are empty,\u201d Gariepy said in an interview, referring to the sign displayed above the vacant shelf reading \u201cEtats-Unis,\u201d French for \u201cUnited States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The government of New Brunswick <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=642484368729178&#038;rdid=tn0CRp00ocfx09xI\" target=\"_blank\">said on Facebook<\/a> that it has stopped buying U.S. alcohol, posting a video of an employee reboxing wine bottles from the U.S. section of an Alcool NB Liquor store.<\/p>\n<p>Another video posted on TikTok by user @Keltieheather shows bare shelves under various \u201cUSA\u201d signs at a store in Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n<p>The Liquor Control Board of Ontario announced Tuesday in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lcbo.com\/content\/lcbo\/en\/corporate-pages\/about-LCBO\/media-centre\/press-releases\/2025\/03-24.html?srsltid=AfmBOoqJhsWObgcGmOnmGixFAyG5BKZ6wXuRzZ7T8Pxsk2xOzx2z8tCy\" target=\"_blank\">a statement on its website<\/a> that it has \u201cceased the purchase of all US products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on nearly all goods from Canada and Mexico, saying the levies are meant to hold the United States\u2019 largest trading partners <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/trump-tariffs-fentanyl-overdose-deaths-declining-rcna194752\" target=\"_blank\">accountable for fentanyl flowing into the country<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau balked at the tariffs, saying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pm.gc.ca\/en\/news\/statements\/2025\/03\/03\/statement-prime-minister-trudeau-on-unjustified-us-tariffs-against-canada\" target=\"_blank\">in a statement<\/a> Tuesday that there was \u201cno justification\u201d for them because \u201cless than 1% of the fentanyl intercepted at the U.S. border came from Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response to the U.S. tariffs, Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/trade-tensions-china-canada-retaliate-us-tariffs-rcna194645\" target=\"_blank\">shot back Tuesday with tariffs of its own<\/a>, moving ahead with an earlier plan to impose 25% levies on 155 billion Canadian dollars ($107 billion) of U.S. goods.<\/p>\n<p>The escalating trade war threatens to send ripples across the U.S. economy. Major retailers have already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/business\/business-news\/target-best-buy-warn-price-hikes-trumps-tariffs-rcna194591\" target=\"_blank\">warned of price hikes for consumers<\/a> due to the new federal import taxes.<\/p>\n<p>The tariffs could also increase prices on alcohol imports from Mexico and Canada and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/economics\/trump-puts-tariffs-thousands-goods-canada-mexico-risking-higher-prices-rcna194542\" target=\"_blank\">hurt the sale\u00a0of U.S. spirits sold in those countries<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, Kentucky exported $76 million worth of whiskey and other spirits to Canada, according to Canada\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/agriculture.canada.ca\/en\/international-trade\/market-intelligence\/us-and-mexico\/canada-united-states-bilateral-trade\/kentucky-canada-agricultural-trade\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food<\/a>. This week, Kentucky liquor products were among those pulled from Canadian store shelves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe governor of Kentucky said, \u2018Don\u2019t touch our bourbon,&#8217; and I said, \u2018Governor, that\u2019s the first thing we\u2019re going after,\u2019\u201d Ontario Premier Doug Ford told reporters Tuesday. \u201cWe\u2019re the largest purchaser of bourbon in the world for Kentucky bourbon manufacturers. They\u2019re done.
