With about two months to go before graduation, their academic accomplishments \u2014 or even their freedom \u2014 could be at risk if they attracted the ire of the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you have a social media page, make sure it is not filled with commentary on the Middle East,\u201d he told the gathering in Pulitzer Hall. When a Palestinian student objected, the journalism school\u2019s dean, <a href=\"https:\/\/journalism.columbia.edu\/faculty\/jelani-cobb\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Jelani Cobb<\/a>, was more direct about the school\u2019s inability to defend international students from federal prosecution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody can protect you,\u201d Mr. Cobb said. \u201cThese are dangerous times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the past two academic years, student protests against the war in Gaza have forced Columbia into a high-stakes balancing act between the competing demands of free speech and student safety.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<p>Last week, the school was pushed from its high wire.<\/p>\n<p>First, the Trump administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/07\/nyregion\/trump-administration-columbia-grants-cancelled-antisemitism.html\" title>revoked $400 million<\/a> in federal grants and contracts over what it said was the school\u2019s failure to combat antisemitism, an extraordinary step that Columbia\u2019s interim president said would affect \u201cnearly every corner of the university.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next day, immigration agents arrested Mahmoud Khalil, a recent graduate, and removed him<strong> <\/strong>from university housing.
