(AP Photo\/Mark Schiefelbein, File)<span>AP<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p id=\"4YN6LGU2JRHYDFS5YR24QH3YBQ\">President Trump has<a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/2025\/11\/2000-tariff-dividend-coming-to-every-american-trump-says.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel title=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/2025\/11\/2000-tariff-dividend-coming-to-every-american-trump-says.html\"> reintroduced the idea of sending a stimulus payment <\/a>\u2013 this one funded by sweeping tariffs put in place by his administration \u2013 to every American.<\/p>\n<p id=\"IKHFX35O2BFS7F46FBXRPLP5WU\">But the how and when and even the ifs of the payments remain.<\/p>\n<p id=\"DONJCDRWUFHEROFITNPDXQEEUQ\"><b>Here\u2019s what we know:<\/b><\/p>\n<h2>What did Trump say?<\/h2>\n<p id=\"3LPKJNDB5BH7BLR7U3NK2YRK64\">In a post on Truth Social, the president said he\u2019d like to fund payments of at least $2,000 per person.<\/p>\n<p id=\"YEJIJ3LFZJHPFD6IDX2H4ARRQU\">\u201cPeople that are against Tariffs are FOOLS!,\u201d Trump said. \u201cWe are now the Richest, Most Respected Country In the World, With Almost No Inflation, and A Record Stock Market Price. 401k\u2019s are Highest EVER. We are taking in Trillions of Dollars and will soon begin paying down our ENORMOUS DEBT, $37 Trillion. Record Investment in the USA, plants and factories going up all over the place. <\/p>\n<p id=\"T3VAQHQ73VELFFVDJQQCOYSLWQ\">\u201cA dividend of at least $2000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Who would receive the payments?<\/h2>\n<p id=\"YRLXX3KGTBGR3BXFTYPMSDJC2I\">Other than excluding \u201chigh-income people\u201d the president did not provide additional details on who would qualify.<\/p>\n<p id=\"NMKIIVZPGBG2XDSTJFZMYV5SRM\">Stimulus payments made during the COVID-19 pandemic were based on income. Income limits for those payments were $150,000 for families, $112,500 for heads of household and $75,000 for individuals.<\/p>\n<h2>How would tariff checks compare to previous stimulus checks?<\/h2>\n<p id=\"ICQJTKXD7BCUZPAOPOTFLNIXEE\">Americans<a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/2025\/09\/stimulus-update-2400-payments-part-of-new-proposal.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel title=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/2025\/09\/stimulus-update-2400-payments-part-of-new-proposal.html\"> received three stimulus checks during the COVID pandemic.<\/a> The first round was paid in April 2020 and included up to $1,200 per eligible adult and $500 per qualifying child. The second round, paid in December 2020, was up to $600 per person and the third, issued in March 2021, was up to $1,400 per individual.<\/p>\n<h2>How much revenue are the tariffs generating?<\/h2>\n<p id=\"ZKEWLYSMBZEIDCR453ELFE6GYE\">Through the first three quarters of this year, some $195 billion has been collected through tariff duties,<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5597207-trump-proposes-tariff-dividend\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel title=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5597207-trump-proposes-tariff-dividend\/\"> according to the Treasury Department.<\/a> Tariffs are taxes on foreign goods companies pay when importing items from overseas. These costs are often passed on to the consumer.<\/p>\n<p id=\"PCJ3OCUPNJGMLAY7BOSMZMPTME\">Trump has indicated the bulk of the revenue generated by the tariffs will go towards paying the national debt but has favored direct payments as well.<\/p>\n<p id=\"HOW34S2SQBH6REFXREGXSWS2U4\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to do something, we\u2019re looking at something. Number one, we\u2019re paying down debt. Because people have allowed the debt to go crazy,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5597771-what-to-know-trumps-2k-tariff-check-proposal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel title=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5597771-what-to-know-trumps-2k-tariff-check-proposal\/\">Trump said recently.<\/a> \u201cWe\u2019ll pay back debt, but we also might make a distribution to the people, almost like a dividend to the people of America.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Not so fast\u2026<\/h2>\n<p id=\"L2TP6O7YHFGWFKMPHBVNFOA4AQ\">While Trump\u2019s comments indicated a stimulus-style payment, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5597771-what-to-know-trumps-2k-tariff-check-proposal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel title=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5597771-what-to-know-trumps-2k-tariff-check-proposal\/\">indicated the rebates could come in a different form<\/a> and confirmed there is no formal plan at this time.<\/p>\n<p id=\"TXABVYQAPZCQ3LVI5FZIIEHJDM\">\u201cIt could be just the tax decreases that we are seeing on the president\u2019s agenda,\u201d Bessent said in an interview Sunday on <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/ThisWeek\" target=\"_blank\" rel title=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/ThisWeek\">ABC News\u2019s \u201cThis Week.\u201d<\/a> \u201cYou know, no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, no tax on Social Security.
