{"id":7402,"date":"2025-11-12T22:15:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T22:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wpinitiate.com\/echo-test\/demo973e36f5\/2025\/11\/12\/epstein-emails-thrust-trump-back-into-spotlight-over-past-ties-the-guardian\/"},"modified":"2025-11-12T22:15:00","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T22:15:00","slug":"epstein-emails-thrust-trump-back-into-spotlight-over-past-ties-the-guardian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wpinitiate.com\/echo-test\/demo973e36f5\/2025\/11\/12\/epstein-emails-thrust-trump-back-into-spotlight-over-past-ties-the-guardian\/","title":{"rendered":"Epstein emails thrust Trump back into spotlight over past ties &#8211; The Guardian"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"maincontent\">\n<p>The release of previously unseen emails sent by convicted sex offender <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/jeffrey-epstein\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Jeffrey Epstein<\/a> has thrust <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Donald Trump<\/a> back into the center of the long-running Epstein controversy that has<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/ng-interactive\/2025\/jul\/19\/trump-epstein-maga-revolt\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"> plagued his administration for months<\/a>, inflamed parts of his own political base and offered Democrats an ongoing line of political attack.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Democrats on the House oversight and government reform committee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/nov\/12\/jeffrey-epstein-new-emails-donald-trump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">released email exchanges from 2011, 2015 and 2019<\/a> that they say were provided by the estate of the late Epstein, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2019\/aug\/10\/jeffrey-epstein-dead-prison-report-latest\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">died by suicide<\/a> in federal prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal charges of sex-trafficking minors.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/oversightdemocrats.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/democrats-oversight.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/3-emails_redacted.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">three released exchanges,<\/a> the disgraced financier, Epstein, describes the US president as the \u201cdog that hasn\u2019t barked\u201d, alleges that Trump had \u201cspent hours\u201d at his home with one of Epstein\u2019s victims \u2013 whose name is redacted \u2013 and claims that \u201cof course\u201d Trump \u201cknew about the girls as he had asked Ghislaine to stop\u201d, referring to Ghislaine Maxwell. Maxwell was Epstein\u2019s longtime associate who was jailed in 2022 for helping Epstein abuse girls and is currently serving a 20-year sentence for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2021\/dec\/29\/ghislaine-maxwell-sex-trafficking-trial-verdict\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">sex-trafficking<\/a> crimes.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats on the committee said that the emails were part of more than 23,000 documents turned over by Epstein\u2019s estate as part of their ongoing investigation into Epstein and that they are still reviewing the documents.<\/p>\n<p>While the full context of the emails is unclear, their release has, once again, reignited public scrutiny of Trump\u2019s past ties to Epstein and Maxwell.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, dismissed the release of the emails and said that Democrats had \u201cselectively leaked emails to the liberal media to create a fake narrative to smear President Trump\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Leavitt said that the unnamed victim referenced in the emails was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/apr\/26\/virginia-giuffre-suicide-dead-aged-41\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">late Virginia Giuffre<\/a>, whom she said \u201crepeatedly said President Trump was not involved in any wrongdoing whatsoever\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Leavitt added that \u201cTrump kicked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/jeffrey-epstein\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Jeffrey Epstein<\/a> out of his club decades ago for being a creep to his female employees, including Giuffre\u201d and said that \u201cthese stories are nothing more than bad-faith efforts to distract from President Trump\u2019s historic accomplishments, and any American with common sense sees right through this hoax and clear distraction from the government opening back up again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after Democrats released the emails, House Republicans on the committee released an <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/release\/oversight-committee-releases-additional-epstein-estate-documents\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">additional 20,000 pages <\/a>of documents from the estate. The Guardian is in the process of reviewing the documents.<\/p>\n<p>Trump, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jul\/18\/trump-epstein-friendship\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">who was friendly with Epstein for at least 15 years<\/a> before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/sep\/09\/trump-epstein-photo-check-woman\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">having a falling out in 2004<\/a>, has consistently denied any knowledge of or involvement in Epstein\u2019s criminal activities. Still, Trump\u2019s past association with Epstein continues to haunt him politically, and in recent months he has found himself embroiled in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jul\/18\/trump-epstein-friendship\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">headline<\/a> after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/sep\/08\/trump-epstein-birthday-letter\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">headline<\/a> regarding his past ties to the disgraced financier.<\/p>\n<p>Over the summer, the Trump administration faced backlash after the justice department announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jul\/14\/jeffrey-epstein-trump-maga-turmoil\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">it would not release <\/a>any additional files related to the Epstein case \u2013 an investigation that has been long surrounded by conspiracy theories \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jul\/14\/jeffrey-epstein-trump-maga-turmoil\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">despite earlier promises<\/a> from Trump and the US attorney general,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jul\/14\/jeffrey-epstein-trump-maga-turmoil\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"> Pam Bondi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That decision <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jul\/14\/jeffrey-epstein-trump-maga-turmoil\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">angered<\/a> both Democrats, who accused the administration of a \u201ccover-up\u201d, and some Trump supporters and conservative commentators who felt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/ng-interactive\/2025\/jul\/19\/trump-epstein-maga-revolt\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">betrayed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As the backlash mounted, Trump<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jul\/16\/donald-trump-dismisses-inquiry-into-jeffrey-epstein-as-boring\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">lashed <\/a>out at his own supporters in July, calling them \u201cweaklings\u201d who \u201cbought into\u201d what he described as the \u201cJeffrey Epstein hoax\u201d that he said was put out by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jul\/16\/donald-trump-dismisses-inquiry-into-jeffrey-epstein-as-boring\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Democrats to discredit him<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want their support anymore!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In a rare break from Trump, Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/mike-johnson-jeffrey-epstein-not-a-hoax\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">said that he didn\u2019t believe that the Epstein<\/a> case was a \u201choax\u201d and called for the release of the case documents, and some of Trump\u2019s supporters<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jul\/17\/trump-jeffrey-epstein-republicans-maga\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"> burned their Maga hats<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In late July, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/justice-department-told-trump-name-in-epstein-files-727a8038?mod=hp_lead_pos1\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">the Wall Street Journal<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jul\/23\/donald-trump-jeffrey-epstein-files\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"> <\/a>reported that justice department officials had informed Trump that his name appeared in the Epstein files. (The paper noted that being mentioned in the records isn\u2019t a sign of wrongdoing.)<\/p>\n<p>The White House denied the report, calling it \u201cfake news\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In an apparent attempt to quell political pressure over the administration\u2019s handling of case, the justice department sent Todd Blanche, the deputy attorney general and one of Trump\u2019s former lawyers, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jul\/22\/ghislaine-maxwell-doj-trump-epstein\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">meet with Maxwell<\/a> in prison to see whether she had \u201cinformation about anyone who has committed crimes against victims\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>During the meeting, Maxwell reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/aug\/22\/ghislaine-maxwell-interview-transcript-justice-department\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">acknowledged <\/a>that Trump and Epstein had once had a social relationship, but said that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/aug\/22\/ghislaine-maxwell-interview-transcript-justice-department\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">she never saw Trump<\/a> do anything inappropriate.<\/p>\n<p>Days later, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/aug\/01\/ghislaine-maxwell-prison-transfer\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Maxwell was transferred from a Florida prison <\/a>to a lower-security facility in Texas, where, according to recent reports, she is \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/nov\/09\/ghislaine-maxwell-trump-admin-prison-transfer\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">much happier<\/a>\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/nov\/10\/ghislaine-maxwell-commutation-prison-sentence\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">is reportedly preparing a <\/a>\u201ccommutation application\u201d for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/trump-administration\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Trump administration<\/a> to review after the US supreme court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/oct\/06\/ghislaine-maxwell-supreme-court-appeal\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">declined to hear<\/a> her appeal.<\/p>\n<p>The release of emails on Wednesday has once again renewed calls from Democrats to release the full cache of the Epstein records to the public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe more Donald Trump tries to cover up the Epstein files, the more we uncover,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/oversightdemocrats.house.gov\/news\/press-releases\/house-oversight-committee-releases-jeffrey-epstein-email-correspondence-raising\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">said<\/a> Democratic representative Robert Garcia, the ranking member of the House committee on oversight. \u201cThese latest emails and correspondence raise glaring questions about what else the White House is hiding and the nature of the relationship between Epstein and the President.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Department of Justice must fully release the Epstein files to the public immediately. The Oversight Committee will continue pushing for answers and will not stop until we get justice for the victims,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/11\/12\/us\/politics\/trump-epstein-emails.html?unlocked_article_code=1.0k8.RZOt.-pI_Klx3G9io&#038;smid=url-share\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">New York Times<\/a>, a spokesperson for the Republicans on the committee accused Democrats of politicizing the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemocrats continue to carelessly cherry-pick documents to generate clickbait that is not grounded in the facts,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Democratic representative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/nov\/12\/jeffrey-epstein-new-emails-donald-trump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Ro Khanna told the Guardian <\/a>that the newly released emails are \u201cexactly why\u201d he is working with Thomas Massie, a Republican representative, to force a House vote to fully release the Epstein files.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe public deserves transparency and the survivors deserve justice,\u201d Khanna said.<\/p>\n<p>Over the summer, House Republicans<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/07\/15\/trump-epstein-khanna-doj-democrats-republicans\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"> twice blocked <\/a>Democratic attempts to force the public release of all Epstein files within 30 days.
