Survivors of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein\u2019s crimes are lobbying House Republicans to vote \u201cyes\u201d on releasing the Epstein files next week, writing a new letter today aimed at applying pressure on GOP lawmakers. <\/p>\n

The letter was addressed to lawmakers in both the House and the Senate, and stressed that in the survivors\u2019 view, \u201cthere is no middle ground\u201d when it comes to the need for full transparency on the Epstein files. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no hiding behind party affiliation. The testimonies you heard are just a fraction of the unimaginable suffering endured by more than a thousand victims alike,\u201d the signatories wrote. <\/p>\n

This week, a discharge petition that would force the House to take a vote on whether to release the Epstein files garnered its last required signature, from newly sworn-in Arizona Rep. Adelita Grijalva. Only four Republicans signed on to the discharge petition \u2014 Reps. Thomas Massie, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Nancy Mace and Lauren Boebert \u2014 but CNN has reported that the number of House Republicans that break from President Donald Trump and vote for the release of the files could be greater. <\/p>\n

Epstein\u2019s survivors are planning to gather in Washington, DC, next week for another news conference, marking the second such public show-of-force this year. <\/p>\n

The Trump administration\u2019s sweeping immigration crackdown<\/a> continues to roil the Chicago area. <\/p>\n

A controversial Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in the suburb of Broadview, Illinois, has been at the center of weeks of protest. A largely peaceful demonstration outside the building today turned chaotic. <\/p>\n

Several people were detained, including at least one clergy member from a group of faith leaders who had joined the protest, according to CNN affiliate WBBM<\/a>. Four officers were injured while trying to redirect demonstrators who left a designated protest area and entered the street outside the facility, according to the Cook County Sheriff\u2019s Office. <\/p>\n

Lawsuit against DHS: <\/strong>Meanwhile, a group of journalists and protesters suing the Department of Homeland Security allege the agency violated a federal judge\u2019s injunction during a protest in Cicero, Illinois, last Saturday. <\/p>\n

The group is accusing agents of shooting some kind of chemical or pepper spray into a moving car during the protest, hitting a couple and their 1-year-old child. <\/p>\n

The incident was raised in a court notice filed yesterday by the group, which noted several \u201capparent violations\u201d to US District Court Judge Sara Ellis\u2019 order earlier this month restricting the use of physical force by federal agents unless under immediate threat of physical harm. <\/p>\n

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin denied the claim when reached by CNN, saying \u201cthere was no crowd control or pepper spray deployed\u201d in a Sam\u2019s Club parking lot near the protest where the incident allegedly took place. <\/p>\n

Rafael Vereza,\u200b the father of the 1-year-old, said at a news conference last weekend that he was not a protester and was just trying to leave the grocery store parking lot. <\/p>\n

A 10-second video submitted with the notice as evidence shows the moment an orange chemical substance appears to be sprayed on Vereza\u2019s moving car. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\"Fulton<\/picture> <\/div>\n

The judge overseeing the Georgia 2020 election racketeering criminal case against Donald Trump and his allies has thrown out more of the charges<\/a> against the president and several of his co-defendants. <\/p>\n

Superior Court of Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee dismissed two charges on this afternoon that Trump and his co-defendants face but still left intact most of the sprawling racketeering indictment. <\/p>\n

McAfee threw out a count of filing false documents against Trump and others. That count related to untrue statements about supposed voter fraud that were included in one of the president\u2019s lawsuits in December 2020 that attempted to negate the election results. <\/p>\n

The judge also threw out one count of filing false documents and one count of conspiring to file false documents, both stemming from the Trump campaign\u2019s efforts to put forward a slate of fake GOP electors in Georgia. Trump was only named in the conspiracy count. <\/p>\n

Even though a long-time veteran career prosecutor will now oversee the case, taking over for Fani Willis who was disqualified, it is unclear how it will move forward. <\/p>\n

A status\/pretrial conference has been scheduled for December 1 in Fulton County with Judge Scott McAfee, but the accused defendants are not required to attend. <\/p>\n

The Internal Revenue Service informed furloughed employees that they won\u2019t receive back pay from the government shutdown until later than originally planned, according to the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU). <\/p>\n

It has been a very difficult time for the employees, said Doreen Greenwald, the National President of the NTEU. Some had to take out loans or work other jobs to provide for their families, she said. <\/p>\n

The law requires that after a shutdown, federal employees receive their back pay at the earliest date possible. <\/p>\n

The Trump administration originally aimed to complete the backlogged payments by November 19. However, the NTEU told reporters today that the IRS informed furloughed employees that they won\u2019t receive partial back pay until November 24, and the rest until as late as December 8. <\/p>\n

The IRS furloughed about 34,400 of its 74,300 employees<\/a> about a week into the shutdown. The remaining staffers were paid with other funds during the impasse. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\"Passengers<\/picture> <\/div>\n

The Department of Transportation is easing the number of flights airlines are required to cut at 40 major airports as air traffic controllers continue to show up for work after the end of the federal government shutdown. <\/p>\n

Starting tomorrow, airlines will be able to operate 97% of their traffic at these major airports. The 3% cut is half of the 6% reduction which FAA had mandated Wednesday night as the shutdown was ending and well below the 10% that was initially set to be imposed today. <\/p>\n

The DOT said it would ease mandatory cuts to flights when air traffic controller staffing made it safe to do so. <\/p>\n

Today, three air traffic control facilities reported staffing problems, including the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport control tower until 10 p.m. ET. The facility which handles flights approaching or departing Newark Liberty International Airport will be short-staffed for one hour at 8 p.m. ET. The same operation was short-staffed this morning. <\/p>\n

The three staffing problems is a fraction of the 32 reported last Friday. <\/p>\n

Thousands of flights were canceled during the shutdown as air traffic controllers took unscheduled time off, to manage stress, work other jobs or protest being required to work without pay. The 650 air traffic controller staffing problems triggered action, including delaying flights and rerouting planes, during the 43-day funding lapse. <\/p>\n

As a deal was reached in Congress to reopen the government, the staffing problems dropped dramatically. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Air traffic controllers received a payment today for some of the hours worked during the government shutdown. <\/p>\n

One controller, who did not want to be named discussing his pay, told CNN he received a direct deposit for his base rate, but it did not include overtime or deductions for taxes. <\/p>\n

The Department of Transportation said earlier this week that controllers would get a payment within 48 hours of the shutdown ending, and the rest within about a week. <\/p>\n

Remember: <\/strong>Controllers, and other Federal Aviation Administration workers who maintain essential equipment, were required to work without pay during the shutdown. <\/p>\n

Some controllers took sick leave during the lapse in funding, resulting in delays and some flight cancellations. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\"Today<\/picture> <\/div>\n

Visitors from as far away as Florida and California lined up at the National Air and Space Museum\u2019s door this morning, eagerly awaiting its reopening. <\/p>\n

The Washington, DC, museum greeted more than 1,000 visitors in just 30 minutes after its reopening, said director Christopher Browne. It is one of two Smithsonian museums<\/a> reopening today. Another five are expected to open tomorrow, with all other museums opening on a rolling basis by Monday. <\/p>\n

Kathy and Deneen Smith from California told CNN they planned their trip to the nation\u2019s capital two months in advance, but the shutdown impacted their plans. \u201cWe\u2019re very thankful that at least we get one day,\u201d Deneen Smith said. They\u2019ve been in the city for five days and were expecting to see all the museums. <\/p>\n

Browne said he found out the museum was reopening \u201cpretty much when the American public found out,\u201d when Congress passed the funding bill. He described the building as being in a state of hibernation during the shutdown and said the facility was able to get back up and running for the public in less than 48 hours. <\/p>\n

\"Visitors<\/picture> <\/div>\n

Janet and Mark Warden from Arizona, who planned their trip more than four months ago, expected their plans to be canceled. However, when they checked the museum\u2019s website yesterday evening, they were able to get tickets for this morning. <\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to see as much as I could here because I\u2019ve never been here before,\u201d Janet Warden said. \u201cWe had a Capitol tour on Tuesday, and it got canceled, and we thought, \u2018Are all of them going to get canceled on us?\u2019 but it opened, and we\u2019re still here.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\"Construction<\/picture> <\/div>\n

Visitors at the top of the Washington Monument today were able to get a view of the now-demolished East Wing of the White House. <\/p>\n

The monument opened at 9 a.m. ET this morning, according to the National Park Service. <\/p>\n

The construction on the East Wing began on October 20<\/a>. It was torn down to make way for President Donald Trump\u2019s 90,000-square-foot ballroom. <\/p>\n

Photos from the top of the monument show dirt and construction equipment in place of where the East Wing once was. The Washington Monument stands in front of the White House on the National Mall. <\/p>\n

Attorney General Pam Bondi said today<\/a> that prosecutors in New York will lead a federal investigation into Jeffrey Epstein\u2019s ties to high-profile figures, an announcement made just hours after President Donald Trump publicly instructed<\/a> her to do so. <\/p>\n

Trump directed Bondi on social media to \u201cinvestigate Jeffrey Epstein\u2019s involvement and relationship with Bill Clinton, Larry Summers, Reid Hoffman, J.P. Morgan, Chase, and many other people and institutions, to determine what was going on with them, and him.\u201d <\/p>\n

The attorney general posted a screenshot of his request, and wrote \u201cThank you, Mr. President.\u201d <\/p>\n

Bondi wrote that she had asked Jay Clayton<\/a>, the top prosecutor in New York\u2019s southern district, to \u201ctake the lead\u201d in that investigation, adding that \u201cas with all matters, the Department will pursue this with urgency and integrity to deliver answers to the American people.\u201d <\/p>\n

More context: <\/strong>The extraordinary step comes just days after Democrats released emails from the late Epstein<\/a> that mention Trump, a move that the president decried as an effort to distract from the government shutdown and \u201call of their other failures.\u201d <\/p>\n

It\u2019s also the second time that the president has personally, and publicly, instructed the attorney general to take a major investigative or prosecutorial act. On their first day back to work following the government shutdown, one Centers for Disease Control and Prevention employee said they were greeted by a dusty keyboard and a mountain of urgent emails, some of which contained urgent asks from doctors. <\/p>\n

Describing what it\u2019s like to be back to work, the source told CNN: \u201cThousands of emails from various state and local health departments, academic partners, and clinicians asking for help\/expertise on various projects meant to keep Americans healthy, all sitting in our inboxes.\u201d <\/p>\n

Those emails \u2014 which went unanswered during the longest-ever government shutdown \u2014 include ones from a clinician seeking help \u201cunderstanding how to treat a rare infectious disease\u201d in a patient, the source said, noting that the CDC is \u201cthe only place that has expertise in this particular pathogen.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThis case was about an individual patient. The doctor turned to CDC for how to treat some obscure disease, and the experts weren\u2019t able to answer,\u201d the source said. <\/p>\n

The email sat unanswered for a week. \u201cWe\u2019d normally answer it the same day, because the patient needs to start treatment right away,\u201d the source said. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

In recent days, President Donald Trump was directly told by at least one of his allies on Capitol Hill that he was getting bad advice on his approach to the Jeffrey Epstein situation<\/a> by continuing to delay and downplay it, a source familiar with the matter told CNN. <\/p>\n

Trump was told by the ally that his staff was allowing bad press on this issue for six months and it opened him up to totally unnecessary criticism, the source added. <\/p>\n
