Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent<\/strong> made a bizarre claim on Sunday Morning Futures<\/em> with Maria Bartiromo<\/strong> that proved to be a head-scratcher for some on social media.<\/p>\n

Bartiromo asked Bessent about a comment made by the CEO of Omaha Steaks who claimed Americans are heading for $10-a-pound ground beef.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cWell, Maria, the beef market is a very specialized market,\u201d Bessent began. \u201cIt goes in long cycles. And this is the perfect storm, again, something we inherited.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bessent went on to make the strange claim that migrants have been bringing diseased cattle with them across the border.<\/p>\n

And there\u2019s also, because of the mass immigration, a disease that had been \u2014 we\u2019ve been rid of in North America made its way up through South America, you know, as these migrants brought some of their cattle with them. So part of the problem is we\u2019ve had to shut the border to Mexican beef because of this disease called the screw worm. So we\u2019re not going to let that get into our supply chain. And, again, I don\u2019t want to focus on one product. It\u2019s a very important product. And if we are laser-focused on this product \u2014<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Bessent then pivoted to talk about inflation, but social media had questions about his previous comment.<\/p>\n

Chuck Todd<\/strong> wrote, \u201cHuh? Talk about a \u2018big if true\u2019 (narrator: it\u2019s not true) \u2014 this has to be A.I. slop, can\u2019t be a serious take from the Sec. Of Treasury?\u201d<\/p>\n

And other observers were equally befuddled.<\/p>\n

Although Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins<\/strong> did suspend Mexican cattle imports<\/a> to the United States due to screwworm concerns, there\u2019s no information to suggest that South American immigrants have been bringing cattle across the U.S. border.<\/p>\n

Economists blame<\/a> President Donald Trump\u2019s<\/strong> tariffs on \u201cbeef from Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Uruguay, feed, farm equipment and machinery\u201d for driving up the cost of beef in the United States.<\/p>\n
