The New York Times\u2019 careful, clinical story about President Donald Trump showing \u201csigns of fatigue\u201d and facing \u201crealities of aging in office\u201d came out two weeks ago. But the story still seems to be on the president\u2019s mind. <\/p>\n

On Tuesday night, Trump lashed out at the Times again in a 488-word Truth Social post, writing, \u201cAfter all of the work I have done with Medical Exams, Cognitive Exams, and everything else, I actually believe it\u2019s seditious, perhaps even treasonous, for The New York Times, and others, to consistently do FAKE reports in order to libel and demean \u2018THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.\u2019 They are true Enemies of the People, and we should do something about it.\u201d <\/p>\n

Trump assails the news media all the time, but his invocation of \u201ctreason\u201d and his ominous threat \u2014 \u201cwe should do something about it\u201d \u2014 stood out to some journalists. <\/p>\n

I wondered if Trump\u2019s rage was in response to some forthcoming story about his health. Maybe, I thought, the Times had sent him a new request for comment, and he was lashing out about it? But I asked around, and as far as I can tell, he wasn\u2019t trying to preempt some new story currently in the works. Instead, it seems, the Nov. 25 article<\/a> by Katie Rogers and Dylan Freedman just really got under his skin. <\/p>\n

Rogers and Freedman analyzed Trump\u2019s schedules and found that he \u201chas fewer public events on his schedule and is traveling domestically much less than he did by this point during his first year in office, in 2017, although he is taking more foreign trips.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd when he is in public, occasionally, his battery shows signs of wear,\u201d the reporters wrote. <\/p>\n

Trump, 79, responded to the article by calling Rogers \u201cugly, both inside and out,\u201d and bragging in all caps about working hard. The White House has described his health as \u201cexcellent\u201d and \u201cexceptional.\u201d <\/p>\n

On Wednesday morning, the Times addressed the president\u2019s latest broadside by saying journalists are simply doing their jobs. <\/p>\n

\u201cAmericans deserve in-depth reporting and regular updates about the health of the leaders they elect,\u201d the Times said. <\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Trump welcomed our reporting on the age and fitness of his predecessors; we\u2019re applying the same journalistic scrutiny to his vitality,\u201d the Times continued. \u201cOur reporting is heavily sourced, based on interviews with people close to the president and with medical experts. We won\u2019t be deterred by false and inflammatory language that distorts the role of a free press.\u201d <\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s palpable frustration with scrutiny of his health \u2014 along with his attempt to convince people he\u2019s near-superhuman \u2014 mirrors the behavior of strongmen throughout history. <\/p>\n

\u201cAutocratic leaders rely on the creation of an illusion that they will be around forever, that\u2019s how they create fear and obedience,\u201d said Anne Applebaum, the author of \u201cAutocracy, Inc.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that Putin and Xi have both had health issues too, and we have no knowledge of the details,\u201d Applebaum said. <\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s doctors have been comparatively forthcoming, issuing multiple memos<\/a> about the president\u2019s physicals, though some outside medical experts have raised doubts about the credibility of some of the assertions. <\/p>\n

As for Trump\u2019s suggestion that the news coverage is \u201cperhaps even treasonous,\u201d Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger dealt with that back in 2019, the first time Trump leveled such an accusation at the publication. <\/p>\n

In an op-ed for a rival<\/a>, the Wall Street Journal, Sulzberger wrote, \u201cThe Founders considered it the gravest of crimes. Tossing the charge around is irresponsible and wrong.\u201d <\/p>\n

Trump is currently suing both the Times and the Journal for defamation, in unrelated cases, and both papers have said they will vigorously contest his claims. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
