We will become homeless at age 70. The impacts are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/03\/18\/trump-administration-reinstates-probationary-employees-court-orders\/82512430007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">rippling across the country<\/a> and lawmakers are hearing about it.<\/p>\n<p>During the week-long break from Congress to visit their districts, Democrats like Morrison faced voters demanding answers on what the party is doing to stand up to a president who is pushing the bounds of executive power, especially after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/03\/14\/government-shutdown-2025-senate-vote-trump-democrats\/82317937007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">several Democratic senators<\/a> joined with Republicans to advance a GOP-led government funding extension and avoid a shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>And the few Republicans who have opted to hold town halls after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/03\/04\/house-republicans-doge-town-halls\/81417000007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">their leadership advised against it<\/a> have been met with questions about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/03\/21\/senator-chuck-grassley-town-hall-gets-heated-quickly-hampton-iowa-franklin-county\/82546379007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">speed and scope<\/a> of the cuts, even if their voters are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/03\/21\/president-donald-trump-approval-ratings\/82563586007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">generally supportive<\/a> of the president\u2019s agenda.<\/p>\n<p>The party has dismissed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/02\/21\/republicans-doge-elon-musk-angry-congress-trump\/79433968007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">the raucous town halls in conservative districts<\/a> as the work of liberal activist groups, which have encouraged people to flood public forums in an attempt to highlight frustrations with the administration. But multiple Republican lawmakers who spoke with USA TODAY said they are hearing concerns from constituents and are communicating them to the administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou get into Social Security offices closing, you get into the federal employees that are dispersed out through the state \u2013 we\u2019re hearing of some concerns. Some are coming from employees that are affected, some are coming from the community. Those ones we have to pay attention to,\u201d said Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., one of the most vulnerable Republican senators up for reelection in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why I\u2019m glad that the president has said it\u2019s time to move into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/doge\/trump-cabinet-meeting-new-limits-elon-musk-backlash-doge-cuts-rcna195259\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\">a surgeon\u2019s versus a lumberjack\u2019s approach<\/a> to DOGE. Kelly Morrison's town hall in suburban Minneapolis Thursday night.\" previous-src=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2025\/03\/21\/USAT\/82600572007-img-9289-2.jpg?width=660&#038;height=495&#038;fit=crop&#038;format=pjpg&#038;auto=webp\"><\/figure>\n<h2>&#8216;Let&#8217;s let the dumpster fire burn out&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>In Trump&#8217;s first 60 days in office, the administration has gutted agencies like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/02\/03\/trump-replaces-consumer-financial-protection-bureau-head\/78189773007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">Consumer Financial Protection Bureau<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/03\/18\/doge-usaid-preliminary-injunction\/82522018007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/03\/18\/doge-usaid-preliminary-injunction\/82522018007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">U.S. Agency for International Development<\/a>, attempted to withhold <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/01\/29\/democrats-republicans-trump-constitutional-crisis\/77996655007\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">congressionally-appropriated funding<\/a>, downsized agencies like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/03\/20\/trump-signs-executive-order-eliminate-education-department\/82569220007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">Department of Education<\/a>, sought to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/social-security-offices-closures-doge-trump-b2b1a5b2ba4fb968abc3379bf90715ff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\">close dozens of Social Security offices<\/a>, and laid off <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/graphics\/2025\/03\/01\/federal-worker-data-visualized-as-firings-layoffs-continue\/80753788007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">tens of thousands of federal employees<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has argued that the administration is seeking to root out &#8220;waste, fraud and abuse&#8221; from a bloated federal government, and said he is fighting an \u201cadministrative state\u201d staffed by \u201cunelected bureaucrats\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2025\/03\/19\/federal-employees-trump-musk-hate-layoffs\/82233377007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">disloyal to Trump and to the American people.<\/a> In a statement to USA TODAY on the pushback at town halls, spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said Trump &#8220;will not be deterred from delivering on the promises he made to make our federal government more efficient and more accountable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Democratic voters, shocked by the rapid changes and without their party in power in Washington, are begging their lawmakers to do something. After Democrats held protest signs and walked out of Trump&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/03\/04\/democrats-protest-donald-trump-address-signs\/81481351007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">joint address to Congress<\/a> earlier this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/03\/05\/democrats-response-slotkin-buttigieg-sotu-00213018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\">their supporters complained<\/a> that the effort was performative and fell flat.<\/p>\n<p>The volume of those complaints ratcheted up significantly after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., led a group of senate Democrats to help Republicans <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/03\/14\/democrats-angry-schumer-shutdown\/82411894007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">pass a partisan funding extension<\/a>, arguing the consequences of a shutdown would be much worse than the bill itself, which gives the administration more leeway over spending decisions.<\/p>\n<figure><img fetchpriority=\"high\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2025\/03\/05\/USAT\/81664917007-usp-news-president-trump-addresses-joint-session-2.jpg?width=660&#038;height=440&#038;fit=crop&#038;format=pjpg&#038;auto=webp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2025\/03\/05\/USAT\/81664917007-usp-news-president-trump-addresses-joint-session-2.jpg?width=1320&#038;height=880&#038;fit=crop&#038;format=pjpg&#038;auto=webp 2x\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Rep. Michael Bennet<\/a>, who faced questions on why he voted to confirm several of Trump&#8217;s Cabinet nominees, such as Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum.<\/p>\n<p>A woman at a town hall in Maryland <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/glenn-ivey-chuck-schumer-town-hall_n_67da0c26e4b049a85e9ebc3a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\">screamed at Democratic Rep. Glenn Ivey<\/a>, who was explaining Democrats&#8217; constraints until the 2026 midterm elections: &#8220;You are talking about voting, the house is on fire!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The approximately 2,000-person crowd in suburban Minnesota Thursday night was decidedly more reserved. Kelly Morrison in Bloomington, Minnesota on March 20, 2025.\"><\/figure>\n<p>Still, multiple people attending Morrison\u2019s town hall told USA TODAY they showed up in search of hope and an indication that Democrats are fighting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m a little disappointed&#8221; with Democrats&#8217; response to the first months of the Trump administration, said Alisha O&#8217;Shaughnessy of Brooklyn Park, 43. &#8220;I feel the lack of action is scary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone of us know what to do, and I know that they\u2019re struggling with it,\u201d said Russ Borchardt, 71, a U.S. Army veteran who typically voted for Republicans until Trump first ran for office in 2016. \u201cBut somehow, we need more. We need more out of the party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His wife Theresa Borchardt, 68, added: \u201cWe just hope that the Democrats can coalesce and do something. \u2018Let\u2019s let the dumpster fire burn out and see what happens\u2019 is not an effective strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Republican members meet angry crowds<\/h2>\n<p>The vast majority of Republican lawmakers have cheered on the changes to the federal government spearheaded by Trump&#8217;s advisor, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/elon-musk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk<\/a>, under the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) project.<\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/02\/21\/republicans-doge-elon-musk-angry-congress-trump\/79433968007\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">during their first break from Congress<\/a> in February, their town halls were overrun with angry constituents livid at the changes. Republican leadership has accused Democratic groups of paying protesters to create chaos at the events. While Democratic groups have promoted the Republican events, there is no evidence attendees are being paid.<\/p>\n<p>The chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee, which helps Republicans win seats in the House of Representatives, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/03\/04\/house-republicans-doge-town-halls\/81417000007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">advised members to hold virtual town halls<\/a> instead to avoid more viral confrontations. Chuck Edwards, R-N.C., was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/local\/2025\/03\/14\/edwards-met-with-anger-over-trump-musk-at-town-hall\/82365021007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">booed and hissed at<\/a> during a town hall in Asheville, and one man was escorted out of the room for yelling at the congressman. Rep. Mike Flood, R-Neb., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/show\/inside-a-heated-town-hall-where-a-nebraska-republican-faced-backlash-over-trumps-policies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\">was shouted down<\/a> as he defended the changes as making progress in reducing spending. And Rep. Harriet Hageman, R-Wyo., heard concerns about Musk the &#8220;unelected billionaire&#8221; making decisions, even from constituents who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/17\/us\/politics\/republicans-town-halls.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\">otherwise support the president&#8217;s agenda<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly a dozen Republican lawmakers told USA TODAY that they&#8217;ve heard from plenty of constituents who applaud the effort to pare down federal government costs. But they also said they&#8217;re watching closely to make sure the changes don&#8217;t cut too close to the bone \u2013 and are flagging Musk&#8217;s team when that happens.<\/p>\n<p>Members cited multiple federal services and employees they&#8217;re looking out for in their districts, from military bases and border patrol outposts to passport processing centers, Social Security offices, forest service agents, and Veterans Affairs clinics.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The art is going to be to make sure you right-size,&#8221; said Rep. Ryan Zinke, R-Mont. &#8220;So a right-size is, from a former (Navy) SEAL perspective: Make sure the front line is fine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Pushback in one Republican district<\/h2>\n<p>As Republicans shy away from in-person town halls, Democrats are hosting their own events in GOP-held parts of the country to point the finger at Trump and his party.<\/p>\n<p>Former 2024 Democratic vice presidential nominee and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz held <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/03\/18\/in-wisconsin-tim-walz-says-democrats-must-push-as-far-as-we-can-against-trump\/82417794007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">a town hall-style event<\/a> on Tuesday in GOP Rep. Derrick Van Orden&#8217;s district, a battleground seat in western Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p>It came after other liberal groups organized their own town halls and invited Van Orden to join, or attempted to join <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2025\/03\/19\/town-halls-wisconsin-van-orden-republicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\">other group&#8217;s meetings<\/a> with the congressman.<\/p>\n<p>On Capitol Hill last week, Van Orden told USA TODAY he&#8217;s met with DOGE staff to ensure &#8220;every single tax dollar that\u2019s allocated or appropriated for the Veterans Affairs administration goes to the veteran.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure><img fetchpriority=\"high\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2025\/03\/21\/USAT\/82599387007-cyndi.JPG?width=660&#038;height=495&#038;fit=crop&#038;format=pjpg&#038;auto=webp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2025\/03\/21\/USAT\/82599387007-cyndi.JPG?width=1320&#038;height=990&#038;fit=crop&#038;format=pjpg&#038;auto=webp 2x\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cyndi Greening wears a paper crown reading \"NO KINGS\" on it at a protest against President Donald Trump's policies in downtown Eau Claire, Wisconsin on March 19.\"><\/figure>\n<p>He also argued that the people turning up to Republican town halls across the country are &#8220;agitators&#8221; disrupting constituents&#8217; ability to speak to their lawmakers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That\u2019s incredibly disrespectful and I\u2019m not going to allow that to take place,&#8221; he said, explaining why he would instead hold virtual town halls.<\/p>\n<p>Cyndi Greening, 68, is a retired professor who said she decided to start a chapter of the progressive activist group Indivisible in western Wisconsin last fall shortly before the presidential election. After a month of mourning the results, she said, &#8220;I got up and said, I gotta do something.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Now the group hosts a weekly protest with other Democratic groups in downtown Eau Claire, the largest city in Van Orden&#8217;s district. On Wednesday, people showed up wrapped up in mittens and hats as the snow fell, holding homemade signs: &#8220;DOGE smells dodgy&#8221; or &#8220;Dump Trump and his Musk-rat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Chippewa Valley Indivisible group started with 28 people in January and now has more than 500 members, Greening said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People were counting on the guardrails. They were counting on the courts, they were counting on our congressional representatives to stand up. Her family has \"always had good care\" through the VA, she said.\"><\/figure>\n<p>Gale served in the U.S. Air Force in Thailand during the Vietnam War, Caroline Haas said, and he&#8217;s had care from the V.A. for multiple medical issues over decades since leaving the service.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s always had good care&#8221; through the VA clinic, she said, adding that the clinic is more important than ever because multiple hospitals in the area have closed in recent years. &#8220;That kind of put this area in a crisis for medical.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But asked what she thinks about the changes the administration has made, she added that she&#8217;s open to making sure the government works better, especially so it doesn&#8217;t &#8220;go broke&#8221; by the time her kids and grandkids might need support.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Maybe some of this needs to come out, how some of the money&#8217;s been spent,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BLOOMINGTON, Minn. \u2013 The questions lobbed at freshman Democratic Rep.
