The president also <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114183576937425149\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">called for the impeachment<\/a> of a judge who sought to pause the deportation of more than 200 migrants to El Salvador. And there were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/14\/world\/middleeast\/gaza-ceasefire-what-we-know.html\" title>deadly Israeli missile strikes on Gaza<\/a>. I would have to,\u201d she said. \u201cI think it is our civic duty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But her biggest fears centered on inflation and the uncertain economy, and were exacerbated in part by Mr. Trump\u2019s new trade policies. She wasn\u2019t sure his strategy would work in the long term and worried the country might plunge into a recession.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<p>With a fixed retirement income, Ms. McCloud was reconsidering her spending habits. She started purchasing less expensive meats and snacks, and cooked more at home. And to save gas, she has canceled day trips to visit friends, catching up by phone instead.<\/p>\n<p>She said Mr. Trump didn\u2019t make \u201cperfectly clear\u201d what possible hardships the American people might face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople who are well off, they can handle it \u2014 but people like me are having conversations about tightening our purse strings,\u201d she said, adding, \u201cThat\u2019s causing anxiety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Audra D. Burch<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"link-7c196a4e\">\u2018He\u2019s not just treading water.\u2019<\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"link-266c8bb1\"><span>Dave Abdallah, 59, from Dearborn Heights, Mich.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"ImageBlock-7\">\n<figure aria-label=\"media\" role=\"group\">\n<div data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-figure\">\n<p><span>Image<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><figcaption data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-caption\"><span><span>Credit&#8230;<\/span><span><span aria-hidden=\"false\">Brittany Greeson for The New York Times<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/18\/world\/middleeast\/israel-strikes-gaza-cease-fire-hamas.html\" title>abrupt end of the cease-fire<\/a> between Israel and Hamas and who was to blame were top of mind for Dave Abdallah.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll put it on the current administration,\u201d he said, noting that he believed that the White House could have demanded the Israeli government not reopen hostilities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/18\/world\/middleeast\/israel-attack-gaza-hamas.html\" title>that recently killed over 400 people in Gaza<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Abdallah, a real estate agent, didn\u2019t see why Mr. Trump couldn\u2019t have put the same kind of pressure on Israel that he was putting on allies like Canada and Mexico with tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>The war pushed Mr. Abdallah to cast his vote for Jill Stein, the Green Party candidate, because he did not like how President Joseph R. Biden Jr. had backed Israel. He said he would have voted for Mr. Trump but didn\u2019t trust him to handle things better.<\/p>\n<p>This week, he said, proved that he was right.<\/p>\n<p>What Mr. Abdallah does like so far, albeit with reservations, is that \u201che\u2019s taking action.\u201d He added, \u201cHe\u2019s not just treading water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Mr. Abdallah doesn\u2019t like Mr. Trump\u2019s battles against federal court rulings, noting that flights carrying migrants to Central America <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/17\/us\/politics\/trump-deportation-flights-hearing.html\" title>were not turned around midair<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/16\/us\/politics\/trump-venezuelans-deportations-el-salvador.html\" title>defying an order<\/a>. The administration said the order came too late.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<p>\u201cWhen a president, or a judge, or a senator, or a congressman or woman, feels that they are above the law or above the country, that is wrong,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Abdallah is especially worried about the effect of tariffs on the automobile industry and Michigan\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe tariffs are just too extreme,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Kurt Streeter<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"link-5dd7e842\">\u2018I\u2019m still not on board necessarily with how he\u2019s addressing it.\u2019<\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"link-1ab7f5cf\"><span>Darlene Alfieri, 55, from Erie, Pa.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"ImageBlock-13\">\n<figure aria-label=\"media\" role=\"group\">\n<div data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-figure\">\n<p><span>Image<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><figcaption data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-caption\"><span><span>Credit&#8230;<\/span><span><span aria-hidden=\"false\">Daniel Lozada for The New York Times<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<p>Many of the glass vases in Darlene Alfieri\u2019s flower shop come from China, so she has known <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/04\/business\/trump-tariffs-china-reacts.html\" title>the effects of tariffs<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/01\/business\/trump-tariffs-american-importers.html\" title>firsthand<\/a>. The higher costs are \u201cnot too God-awful bad\u201d \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/13\/business\/economy\/trump-tariff-timeline.html\" title>about a 10 percent hike<\/a> \u2014 but enough that she has asked people to return unused vases so she can keep prices down.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<p>None of this was ideal but neither was the status quo, Ms. Alfieri said, when she felt that so many other countries were taking advantage of the United States in their trade policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the things that he\u2019s trying to address need to be addressed,\u201d she said of Mr. Trump\u2019s tariffs. \u201cI\u2019m still not on board necessarily with how he\u2019s addressing it, because I don\u2019t think they\u2019re giving out enough accurate, detailed information. I am a person who needs the details.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Alfieri said she understood that sacrifices were needed, and she was willing to endure some short-term disruption. But she would welcome a little more communication about what the country may be in for.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he\u2019ll end up making it better, but I think it\u2019s gonna get worse before it gets better,\u201d she said. Maybe not worse, she clarified, but certainly the country would be different. And sometimes, she said, it\u2019s hard to know right away whether big changes were good or bad.<\/p>\n<p>But the good thing about democracy, she felt, was that in four years, the country would get to assess matters. \u201cWe get to re-evaluate and say, \u2018OK, so he\u2019s done these things,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201c\u2018Do we want to keep going with this?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Campbell Robertson<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<p><h2 id=\"link-65b3cfb7\">\u2018Anything and everything he does, they\u2019re against it. That probably bothers me more than anything.\u2019<\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"link-554e88c1\"><span>Perry Hunter, 55, from Sellersburg, Ind.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"ImageBlock-19\">\n<figure aria-label=\"media\" role=\"group\">\n<div data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-figure\">\n<p><span>Image<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><figcaption data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-caption\"><span><span>Credit&#8230;<\/span><span><span aria-hidden=\"false\">David Kasnic for The New York Times<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-10\">\n<p>To Perry Hunter, people have been outraged over Mr. Trump\u2019s recent actions just because they don\u2019t like him, and not, he felt, over whether Mr. Trump had done <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2025\/02\/05\/us\/trump-agenda-defying-law.html\" title>something unconstitutional<\/a> or unnecessary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe division is getting stronger because those that oppose him are so emotionally invested, and anything and everything he does, they\u2019re against it,\u201d he said. \u201cThat probably bothers me more than anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Perry, a high school teacher, argued that there appeared to him to be gray areas in what Mr. Trump was doing, pointing to the president\u2019s recent deportation, against a judge\u2019s orders, of about 200 people, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/18\/us\/trump-deportations-venezuela-gang.html\" title>members accused of being in a Venezuelan gang<\/a>. Mr. Hunter said that he was struggling with the fact that those who were deported were most likely not being afforded due process, and he added that the administration needed to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/20\/us\/politics\/trump-deportation-venezuela-tren-de-aragua.html\" title>transparent about the details<\/a> so the public could consider whether it had done something wrong.<\/p>\n<p>He felt strongly that Mr. Trump shouldn\u2019t defy judges because separation of powers was important. The president needed to \u201cgo about doing it constitutionally,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-11\">\n<p>There have been moments, though, when he has felt Mr. Trump was in the right. Mr. Hunter said that, in light of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/12\/nyregion\/columbia-university-trump-protests.html\" title>pro-Palestinian protests<\/a>, he had been heartened to see how the administration punished Columbia University financially. That came after the administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/13\/nyregion\/columbia-university-students-disciplined-hamilton-hall.html\" title>accused the institution<\/a> of failing to protect students and faculty members \u201cfrom antisemitic violence and harassment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he thought <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/17\/nyregion\/columbia-trump-administration-funding-fight.html\" title>Mr. Trump\u2019s cancellation<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/21\/nyregion\/trump-columbia-university-400-million.html\" title>$400 million<\/a> in federal grants and contracts to the university made sense. (On Friday, Columbia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/21\/nyregion\/columbia-response-trump-demands.html\" title>agreed to yield to many of the administration\u2019s most substantial demands<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was one of the things that had me lean towards President Trump because I don\u2019t like discrimination,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Juliet Macur<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"link-3cf95ac9\">\u2018The beauty of this country is, no matter what, everybody gets a fair chance.\u2019<\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"link-3f0977ea\"><span>Hamid Chaudhry, 53, from Reading, Pa.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"ImageBlock-23\">\n<figure aria-label=\"media\" role=\"group\">\n<div data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-figure\">\n<p><span>Image<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><figcaption data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-caption\"><span><span>Credit&#8230;<\/span><span><span aria-hidden=\"false\">Caroline Gutman for The New York Times<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-12\">\n<p>In the weeks after the election, Hamid Chaudhry saw a notable jump in traffic at the farmers\u2019 market he runs. This burst of spending seemed to reinforce his decision to vote for Mr. Trump.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-13\">\n<p>But more recently foot traffic has been down and people haven\u2019t been spending as much as they were in December and January.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a little concerning but not the doom and gloom,\u201d Mr. Chaudhry said. He was willing to wait and see.<\/p>\n<p>He believed that the United States had long been exploited by other countries\u2019 trade practices and that it was well past time to get tough, even if that meant risking a recession. \u201cIt\u2019s a game of chicken,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>But while his faith in Mr. Trump\u2019s fiscal management remained, so did his concerns about his approach to immigration. Though he still supported Mr. Trump generally, Mr. Chaudhry was troubled by the news that scores of immigrants had been sent to a prison in El Salvador without the opportunity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/18\/us\/trump-deportations-venezuela-gang.html\" title>to contest the accusation<\/a> that they were members of the Venezuelan gang.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe beauty of this country is, no matter what, everybody gets a fair chance,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Campbell Robertson<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-14\">\n<p><h2 id=\"link-15a520e9\">\u2018He\u2019s not above the law.\u2019<\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"link-26f5c843\"><span>Tali Jackont, 57, from Los Angeles<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"ImageBlock-29\">\n<figure aria-label=\"media\" role=\"group\">\n<div data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-figure\">\n<p><span>Image<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><figcaption data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-caption\"><span><span>Credit&#8230;<\/span><span><span aria-hidden=\"false\">Mark Abramson for The New York Times<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-15\">\n<p>The return of the dozens of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas was of primary concern for Tali Jackont, an educator in Los Angeles who was raised in Israel.<\/p>\n<p>She appreciated that Mr. Trump recently hosted freed hostages at the White House and that he seemed to show a certain level of concern for them.<\/p>\n<p>But she also linked Mr. Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/06\/world\/middleeast\/trump-hamas-warning-hostages-gaza.html\" title>incendiary rhetoric<\/a> against Hamas to how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/21\/us\/politics\/trump-netanyahu-israel-political-strategy.html\" title>Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel<\/a>, whom she opposes, later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/18\/world\/middleeast\/israel-attack-gaza-hamas.html\" title>broke the cease-fire<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>None of it was necessary, said Ms. Jackont, a longtime Democrat who voted for Mr. Trump partly in the hopes he would bring peace to the Middle East. And she felt that now the hostages were perhaps more endangered than ever.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-16\">\n<p>The president had her worried about other issues, too. For example, she found troubling how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/19\/us\/trump-judges-threats.html\" title>Mr. Trump had blasted judges who had ruled against him<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s not above the law,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>But Ms. Jackont approved of his effort to streamline the federal government and felt good about his moves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/21\/us\/politics\/trump-education-department-student-loans.html\" title>to upend the education system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And the economy?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI trust him,\u201d she said, adding that she felt the president knew more about \u201cthe economy than any other area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Jackont said she could accept it if Mr. Trump\u2019s plans led to a significant slowdown \u2014 but not for too long. She noted the economy began struggling years ago, during his first administration.<\/p>\n<p>But if a recession lasted, for example, three years, she would feel differently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll be very disappointed,\u201d she said. \u201cSuper-disappointed.
