Authorities have not accused Trump of criminal wrongdoing related to Epstein, and the DOJ said some of the materials include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/live-news\/trump-epstein-files-12-23-25?post-id=cmjindse800003b6ph6gk82jz\">\u201cuntrue and sensationalist\u201d <\/a>claims about the president.     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjizk36y000h3b6r7zbe11eo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             <strong>\u2022 <\/strong>The documents also include a series of emails showing correspondence between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/17\/politics\/maxwell-habeas-corpus-petition\">Ghislaine Maxwell<\/a>, Epstein\u2019s convicted accomplice, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/live-news\/trump-epstein-files-12-23-25?post-id=cmjiq8ezt00003b6p4pffe74a\">a person with the alias \u201cA\u201d<\/a> that appears to be connected to the British royal family.     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjjbjptm00043b6vb02raxq6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             <strong>\u2022 <\/strong>Meanwhile, the DOJ has asked career prosecutors in Florida to volunteer over the \u201cnext several days\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/23\/politics\/justice-department-redactions-review-epstein-files\">to help to redact the files<\/a>. A series of apparent FBI emails from July 2019 cite \u201c10 co-conspirators.\u201d The documents also cite \u2014 but don\u2019t appear to actually include \u2014 memos after Epstein\u2019s August 2019 death outlining co-conspirators that could be charged. To date, only Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, his former girlfriend, have been charged.                <\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.1.text\">                      <strong>Trump in the investigations:<\/strong> There is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/live-news\/trump-epstein-files-12-23-25?post-id=cmjin8wji00003b6pzgowgqi5\"><strong>a 2021 subpoena from the Maxwell case to Trump\u2019s Mar-a-Lago Club<\/strong><\/a> seeking \u201cany and all employment records relating to\u201d a redacted individual. While it\u2019s not clear who the individual is, we\u2019ve known that one of Epstein\u2019s accusers, the late Virginia Giuffre, formerly worked at Mar-a-Lago. There is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/live-news\/trump-epstein-files-12-23-25?post-id=cmjidek8f00003b6pey9wd4an\"><strong>a 2020 email<\/strong><\/a> from an assistant US attorney for the Southern District of New York noting Trump flew on Epstein\u2019s plane eight times. Trump has never been accused by law enforcement of wrongdoing related to Epstein\u2019s crimes, and he has denied any wrongdoing.                <\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.2.text\">                      <strong>DOJ says one letter is \u201cfake\u201d:<\/strong> Included in the documents is a letter \u2014 which the Justice Department now says is \u201cFAKE\u201d \u2014 signed by \u201cJ. Epstein\u201d and addressed to another infamous convicted sex offender, disgraced ex-USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar. \u201cWe shared one thing \u2026 our love and caring for young ladies and the hope they\u2019d reach their full potential,\u201d the letter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/live-news\/trump-epstein-files-12-23-25?post-id=cmjigazrs00053b6pljrc2l5z\"><strong>says<\/strong><\/a>. \u201cOur President also shares our love of young, nubile girls.\u201d                <\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.3.text\">                      <strong>Questionable actions from the DOJ: <\/strong>The department\u2019s initial statement today reads as if it\u2019s from Trump\u2019s personal lawyer \u2014 i.e. its reference to how this information, if credible, \u201ccertainly would have been weaponized against President Trump\u201d \u2013 rather than a neutral handler of this information. Epstein\u201d that appears to make crude references<\/strong><\/a> to President Donald Trump in a short 2019 message from jail addressed to convicted sex offender Larry Nassar. The accounts were submitted either electronically or over the phone \u2013 and then documented in an FBI intake form. Though some of the claims allege incidents dating back to the 90s, many of the reports were made in 2020, according to the documents.     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj0mtt800093b6vaxfn2ayr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             CNN is not reporting the details of these claims because they have not been verified. But their inclusion in the thousands of documents released as part of the Epstein files offers a window into the sheer volume of material investigators collected over years of investigating Epstein.     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj0mtt8000a3b6vr8ninxqf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             As part of a 2008 non-prosecution deal, Epstein served 13 months in a Palm Beach County jail, with a work release during the day, for state prostitution charges over his involvement with underage girls.     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj0mtt8000b3b6vlnj3rm41@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             Epstein also had to register as a sex offender.     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj0mtt8000c3b6vhcnwsbj2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             In July 2019, Epstein was arrested and charged in connection with having operated a sex trafficking ring. Epstein\u201d and addressed to convicted sex offender Larry Nassar is \u201cfake,\u201d asserting that the handwriting did not appear to match that of Jeffrey Epstein.     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj2wdkg000c3b6vlv7qsi3w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             The department had said earlier Tuesday that it was assessing the validity of the letter \u2013 which appeared to make crude references to President Donald Trump \u2013 because other details called into question whether it had actually been written and sent by Epstein.     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj2wdkg000d3b6vb58m9y44@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             \u201cThis fake letter serves as a reminder that just because a document is released by the Department of Justice does not make the allegations or claims within the document factual,\u201d the Justice Department said in a post on X hours after the letter was released among a tranche of other Epstein-related records.     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj2wdkg000e3b6vj5mnb3sd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             The letter does not explicitly name Trump, but instead refers to \u201cour president.\u201d The message appears to have been sent in August 2019, the same month Epstein died by suicide. The envelope says it was sent from the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City to Nassar, who was listed as an inmate at a federal prison in Arizona.     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj2wdkg000n3b6v9b3cxd7c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             The letter was postmarked three days after Epstein died. Prison staff are authorized to read and inspect outgoing mail, which can cause delays.     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj2wdkg000o3b6v29l2msou@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             Based on prison documents released from a Freedom of Information Act request, CNN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/06\/02\/us\/jeffrey-epstein-death-documents-larry-nassar?cid=ios_app\">previously reported<\/a> that while he was jailed, Epstein appeared to send a letter to Nassar \u2014 although the contents of the letter were not disclosed. It was discovered by prison officials investigating Epstein\u2019s suicide weeks after his death. It is not known if Nassar and Epstein had a relationship.     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj2wdkg000p3b6vsw45052t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             The FBI in 2020 requested from its laboratory a handwriting analysis be done to compare the letter to other writings from Epstein, according to another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/epstein\/files\/DataSet%208\/EFTA00035759.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">document<\/a> posted on Tuesday from the DOJ. While the latest DOJ statement said the FBI had confirmed the letter was \u201cfake,\u201d it did not specifically say that conclusion was based on the 2020 handwriting analysis.     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj2wdkg000q3b6vnxd6sr5g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             Nassar, the longtime doctor for the USA gymnastics team and Michigan State University, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/12\/13\/us\/larry-nassar-gymnastics-settlement\/index.html\">serving a 60-year sentence in federal prison<\/a> on child sex abuse charges. More than 150 women and girls <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/12\/13\/us\/larry-nassar-gymnastics-settlement\/index.html\">publicly told a court <\/a>he sexually abused them.     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj2wdkg000r3b6vzq7gvnj7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             The envelope, addressed to Larry Nassar at 9300 S. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche defended the earlier redactions by saying his department was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/live-news\/trump-epstein-files-12-23-25\">focused on protecting victims.<\/a>     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjiz67j3000a3b6uj3tmaae2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             Brad Moss, an attorney who specializes in national security, told CNN that redactions in the files were \u201calmost certainly\u201d made using the same standards of what is permissible under the federal Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjiz67j3000b3b6uialxy0cx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             While that law does not apply to the current batch of files, as they were disclosed under a different law signed by President Donald Trump last month, it is not uncommon for the government to use FOIA standards as a best practice for releases of such records.     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjiz67j3000c3b6urfw02p7p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             Under FOIA, the names of government personnel \u201ccan and often are redacted if their position is not of a sufficient seniority and their role is not sufficiently public-facing to warrant revealing their identity to the public,\u201d according to Moss.     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjiz67j3000d3b6u659za7hb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             For example, the name of Alexander Acosta \u2014 the former US Attorney for the Southern District of Florida who stepped away from his position of Secretary of Labor in Trump\u2019s first term over his handling of the Epstein case \u2014 is not redacted.     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjiz67j3000e3b6uc072otkg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             But the names of assistant US attorneys working under him are. The same is true for rank-and-file FBI agents and members of other law enforcement agencies.     <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjiz67j3000f3b6ux9gi3wj8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             The rush to release the Epstein files has led to some confusing redactions. In the batch of files released last week, there were cases where pictures were duplicated \u2014 but only one of those pictures had redactions. Epstein\u201d and addressed to convicted sex offender<\/a> Larry Nassar in the same month Epstein died by suicide in 2019 is \u201cfake.\u201d The letter appears to make crude references to Trump but does not explicitly name him, instead referring to \u201cour president.\u201d The Justice Department said that, among other suspicious details, the handwriting did not appear to match Epstein\u2019s. Authorities have not accused Trump of any wrongdoing or charged him with any crimes in connection with Epstein.                <\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.2.text\">                      The Justice Department says the materials contain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/live-news\/trump-epstein-files-12-23-25?post-id=cmjindse800003b6ph6gk82jz\">\u201cuntrue and sensationalist\u201d<\/a> claims about Trump, which were submitted to the FBI just prior to the 2020 election. The DOJ did not specify which claims are untrue, and said it had released the material \u201cout of our commitment to the law and transparency.\u201d                <\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.3.text\">                      Among the documents is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/live-news\/trump-epstein-files-12-23-25?post-id=cmjin8wji00003b6pzgowgqi5\">2021 subpoena<\/a> to the Mar-a-Lago Club founded by Trump in 1995. The subpoena relates to the government\u2019s investigation into Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein\u2019s former girlfriend and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/06\/28\/us\/ghislaine-maxwell-sentencing\">convicted accomplice<\/a>. It demands \u201cany and all employment records relating to\u201d a person whose name is redacted. It is not clear who the person is.                <\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.4.text\">                      In a series of emails from 2001, Maxwell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/live-news\/trump-epstein-files-12-23-25?post-id=cmjiq8ezt00003b6p4pffe74a\">corresponds with a person<\/a> with the alias \u201cA\u201d that appears to be connected to the British royal family. In one email, \u201cA\u201d asks Maxwell if she has \u201cfound me some new inappropriate friends.\u201d The person in the email is not explicitly identified as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/13\/uk\/andrew-mountbatten-windsor-epstein-files-intl\">Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor<\/a>, but he was introduced to Epstein in 1999 by Maxwell. Mountbatten-Windsor not been charged with any crimes in connection with Epstein and has previously and repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.
