Now it&#8217;s half-empty. <\/p>\n<p>Before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a>&#8216;s second term, the Kennedy Center presented over 2,000 events each year, making it the nation&#8217;s busiest performing arts center. It is the official home of the National Symphony Orchestra and the Washington National Opera, and in recent years, it had been host to family-friendly drag shows and LGBTQ+ Pride events.<\/p>\n<p>The center&#8217;s 2026 schedule is looking emptier now that Trump has banned any act related to the queer community, and as musicians continue canceling their performances in protest. Though it isn&#8217;t just the Center&#8217;s reputation that&#8217;s collapsing \u2014 ticket sales and broadcast views are down significantly this year compared to those under the Biden administration. <\/p>\n<p>Trump claims he&#8217;s shaking things up in the name of saving the center, but in reality, his decisions are destroying it. He said he was specifically motivated to overhaul the center so he could end the family-friendly drag shows it occasionally hosted.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cAt my direction, we are going to make the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., GREAT AGAIN. I have decided to immediately terminate multiple individuals from the Board of Trustees, including the Chairman, who do not share our Vision for a Golden Age in Arts and Culture,\u201d Trump said on Truth Social. \u201cWe will soon announce a new Board, with an amazing Chairman, DONALD J. TRUMP!\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust last year, the Kennedy Center featured Drag Shows specifically targeting our youth \u2014 THIS WILL STOP,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;The Kennedy Center is an American Jewel, and must reflect the brightest STARS on its stage from all across our Nation. For the Kennedy Center, THE BEST IS YET TO COME!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After firing several board members appointed by President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/joe-biden\" target=\"_self\"><u>Joe Biden<\/u><\/a> \u2014 including former White House Press Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/politics\/karine-jean-pierre-exit-interview\" target=\"_self\">Karine Jean-Pierre<\/a>, award-winning musician Jon Batiste, and billionaire philanthropist David Rubenstein \u2014 Trump appointed former ambassador Richard Grenell, a die-hard MAGA ally and out gay man, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/politics\/trump-ric-grenell-kennedy-center\" target=\"_blank\">interim \u201cexecutive director.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"rebelltitem6\" data-id=\"6\" data-reload-ads=\"false\" data-is-image=\"False\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/politics\/donald-trump-kennedy-center-cancellations#rebelltitem6\" data-basename=\"kennedy-center-bans-drag-and-pride\" data-post-id=\"2674837427\" data-published-at=\"1767131848\" data-use-pagination=\"False\">\n<h2 data-role=\"headline\">                              Kennedy Center bans drag and Pride                                   <\/h2>\n<p>Following Trump&#8217;s takeover, the Kennedy Center began scrubbing its calendar of any events connected to the LGBTQ+ community. Not only were drag shows canceled \u2014 the center also removed performances by the Gay Men\u2019s Chorus of <u><\/u>Washington, D.C., <u><\/u>and the National Symphony Orchestra.<\/p>\n<p>The chorus confirmed in a statement in February that its unofficial WorldPride concert, \u201cA Peacock Among Pigeons,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/news\/gay-mens-chorus-kennedy-center\" target=\"_blank\">had been canceled <\/a>shortly after performance and ticketing information quietly disappeared from the center\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe piece was intended to be a part of the Kennedy Center\u2019s Pride celebration, and we were very excited to be collaborating with the NSO as their guest chorus,\u201d the chorus wrote. \u201cWe believe in the power of music to educate and uplift, to foster love, understanding, and community, and we regret that this opportunity has been taken away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>WorldPride 2025 organizers also made the decision in May to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/news\/worldpride-kennedy-center-events-cancelled\" target=\"_blank\">relocate multiple events<\/a> from the Kennedy Center to the WorldPride Welcome Center in downtown D.C., including its Tapestry of Pride programming, which featured portions of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, a reading room, and a family-friendly drag story time.<\/p>\n<p>Capital Pride Alliance Executive Director Ryan Bos told <em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/news\/world-pride-continues-protest-march\" target=\"_blank\">The Advocate<\/a><\/em><\/em> in February that the organization was anticipating it would no longer be welcome at the Kennedy Center under Trump, and it was &#8220;navigating identifying new locations just to be on the safe side.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"rebelltitem5\" data-id=\"5\" data-reload-ads=\"true\" data-is-image=\"False\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/politics\/donald-trump-kennedy-center-cancellations#rebelltitem5\" data-basename=\"kennedy-center-ticket-sales-plummet\" data-post-id=\"2674837427\" data-published-at=\"1767131848\" data-use-pagination=\"False\">\n<h2 data-role=\"headline\">                              Kennedy Center ticket sales plummet                                   <\/h2>\n<p>By October, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/news\/kennedy-center-struggles-under-trump\" target=\"_blank\">ticket sales at the center had plummeted<\/a>. Over 43 percent of seats went unsold between September 3 and October 19, according to a report from <em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/entertainment\/2025\/10\/31\/kennedy-center-sales\/?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Washington Post<\/a><\/em><\/em>, compared to only 7 percent during the same period in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The data showed that the Kennedy Center\u2019s largest venues \u2014 the Opera House, Concert Hall, and Eisenhower Theater \u2014 were struggling across the board. Even high-profile events, such as <em><em>The Sound of Music<\/em><\/em> and National Symphony Orchestra programs, failed to fill the house, leaving tens of thousands of seats empty.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, other high-profile events that would have drawn crowds began falling through as artists pulled out. <em><em>Hamilton<\/em><\/em> creator Lin-Manuel Miranda told <em><em>Out<\/em><\/em>, <em><em>The Advocate\u2019s<\/em><\/em> sibling publication, that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/arts-entertainment\/lin-manuel-miranda-kennedy-center\" target=\"_blank\">withdrawing the musical\u2019s planned 2026 run<\/a> at the center was \u201cmorally not complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Well, in one sense, we were lucky in that we didn&#8217;t have a contract in place, so there were no legal ramifications to us pulling out,&#8221; Miranda said. &#8220;Morally, it was not complicated, because the Kennedy Center has historically been a bipartisan birthplace for the best of our nation&#8217;s arts. Trump&#8217;s administration politicized that when they fired the board and Trump named himself head of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were just not going to participate in that if we had the option not to, and I&#8217;m very thankful we have the option not to,&#8221; he added. &#8220;It was a very easy decision for us to not participate in what that&#8217;s becoming.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"rebelltitem2\" data-id=\"2\" data-reload-ads=\"false\" data-is-image=\"False\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/politics\/donald-trump-kennedy-center-cancellations#rebelltitem2\" data-basename=\"trump-renames-the-kennedy-center\" data-post-id=\"2674837427\" data-published-at=\"1767131848\" data-use-pagination=\"False\">\n<h2 data-role=\"headline\">                              Trump renames the Kennedy Center                                   <\/h2>\n<p>The White House claimed in December that the Kennedy Center&#8217;s board voted unanimously to change its name to the &#8220;Trump-Kennedy Center,&#8221; something that only Congress has the authority to do. Rep. Joyce Beatty, a Democrat from Ohio, said afterwards that the change was forced through as she was prevented from speaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat you may hear is that there was a unanimous vote to rename the Kennedy Center the Trump center,\u201d Beatty said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.x.com\/RepBeatty\/status\/2001741402745524362\" target=\"_blank\">video <\/a>posted online. \u201cBe clear, I was on that call, and as I tried to push my button to voice my concern, to ask questions, and certainly not to vote in support of this, I was muted. Each time I tried to speak, I was muted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Members of the late President John F. Kennedy&#8217;s family immediately voiced their disapproval. Maria Shriver, his niece, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.x.com\/mariashriver\/status\/2001737390306791682\" target=\"_blank\">post <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.x.com\/mariashriver\/status\/2001737390306791682\"><\/a>that the decision left her \u201cspeechless, and enraged, and in a state of disbelief.\u201d Former Congressman Joe Kennedy III maintained that the name change is illegal. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Kennedy Center is a living memorial to a fallen president and named for President Kennedy by federal law,\u201d he <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.x.com\/joekennedy\/status\/2001735896228302982\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cIt can no sooner be renamed than can someone rename the Lincoln Memorial, no matter what anyone says.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grenell replied by mocking them. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.x.com\/RichardGrenell\/status\/2001775079462494621\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a>, &#8220;The place was literally falling apart and you didn\u2019t help \u2014 at all. Where you been, Maria? You were completely silent while the building crumbled. Donald Trump had to step in and save it because you didn\u2019t help. Trump announced that he would personally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/news\/trump-continues-kennedy-center-takeover\" target=\"_blank\">host the 2025 Kennedy Center Honors<\/a> on CBS, stating that he chose &#8220;98 percent\u201d of the nominees and rejected several \u201cwoke\u201d options. He also claimed that White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles convinced him to host the awards, as it would supposedly lead to &#8220;better ratings.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m the president of the United States. Are you fools asking me to do that?&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;\u2018Sir, you\u2019ll get much higher ratings.\u2019 I said, I don\u2019t care. I\u2019m president of the United States. I won\u2019t do it. They said, please.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The 48th Kennedy Center Honors telecast drew the smallest audience ever for the event, according to a report from <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.x.com\/PIUpdate\/status\/2003907910699450814\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PIUpdate\/status\/2003907910699450814\">Programming Insider<\/a>.<\/em> The broadcast received just 2.65 million viewers, marking a 35 percent decline from the 4.1 million viewers in 2024, which itself was one of the lowest rated shows in recent years. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"rebelltitem1\" data-id=\"1\" data-reload-ads=\"false\" data-is-image=\"False\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/politics\/donald-trump-kennedy-center-cancellations#rebelltitem1\" data-basename=\"artists-cancel-shows-at-the-kennedy-center\" data-post-id=\"2674837427\" data-published-at=\"1767131848\" data-use-pagination=\"False\">\n<h2 data-role=\"headline\">                              Artists cancel shows at the Kennedy Center                                   <\/h2>\n<p>In response to the Kennedy Center&#8217;s name change, several artists canceled their performances. Jazz musician Chuck Redd called off his annual free Christmas Eve concert for the first in the more than 20 years since it began, directly citing the rebrand. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I saw the name change on the Kennedy Center website and then hours later on the building, I chose to cancel our concert,\u201d Redd told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apnews.com\/article\/kennedy-center-jazz-jam-canceled-993fdbcbadb34da635799012e7369452\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>New York jazz group The Cookers canceled ita New Year&#8217;s Eve performance just two days before it was scheduled. The group did not directly cite the name change in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecookersmusic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a> but said that \u201cJazz was born from struggle and from a relentless insistence on freedom: freedom of thought, of expression, and of the full human voice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not turning away from our audience, and do want to make sure that when we do return to the bandstand, the room is able to celebrate the full presence of the music and everyone in it,\u201d the group wrote. \u201cOur hope is that this moment will leave space for reflection, not resentment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other artists have canceled their performances scheduled for later this year, including country singer Kristy Lee and New York-based dance company Doug Varone and Dancers. Lee said that while \u201ccanceling shows hurts\u201d as they \u201ckeep the lights on,\u201d she felt that &#8220;losing my integrity would cost me more than any paycheck.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Grenell recently sent a letter to Redd <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/politics\/trump-kennedy-center-chuck-redd\" target=\"_blank\">threatening to sue him <\/a>for canceling his free concert, demanding $1 million in damages. As officials dealt with the backlash to the name change and the several canceled performances, Toby Morton, a former <em>South Park<\/em> writer, revealed that he had already purchased the website domains TrumpKennedyCenter.org and TrumpKennedyCenter.com. <\/p>\n<p>Morton told <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/style\/2025\/12\/20\/trump-kennedy-website\/\"><em>The Washington Post <\/em><\/a>that he bought the domains in August after predicting that Trump would try to name the Center after himself. He said, \u201cAs soon as Trump began gutting the Kennedy Center board earlier this year, I thought, \u2018Yep, that name\u2019s going on the building.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The websites are still under construction, but already feature posts taking digs at the president, including one that suggests visitors \u201cRing in the New Year with a performance by The Epstein Dancers.&#8221; Parts of the site&#8217;s logo are also blacked out in reference to the heavily redacted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/news\/trump-is-in-epstein-files\" target=\"_blank\">Epstein files<\/a> recently released by the Justice Department. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere, tradition is preserved, narratives are curated, and performances are elevated beyond mere art,&#8221; the website states. &#8220;What is remembered matters.
