\u2022 Trump\u2019s plan for Venezuela: <\/strong>President Donald Trump said the US will indefinitely \u201crun the country\u201d of Venezuela<\/a> and \u201crebuild the oil infrastructure\u201d after capturing President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/a> in a large-scale military operation today. He suggested the US would remain on-site until the nation is \u201cback on track\u201d but didn\u2019t specify a timeline. <\/p>\n

\u2022 What\u2019s next for Maduro: <\/strong>The Venezuela leader is expected to arrive today in New York, where he will face drugs and weapons charges<\/a>. His wife, Cilia Flores, was also taken into custody after the couple was dragged from their bedroom<\/a> by elite US forces during the overnight raid. <\/p>\n

\u2022 On the ground: <\/strong>Venezuela\u2019s opposition leader Mar\u00eda Corina Machado has called for an opposition candidate to be installed<\/a> as leader, while the county\u2019s foreign minister insists Maduro remains the country\u2019s head. <\/a>Venezuelans in the capital have voiced mixed reactions<\/a> to the US\u2019s operation, with some celebrating the \u201cpositive change\u201d and others saying Maduro\u2019s capture creates \u201can even worse conflict.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

President Donald Trump said Saturday that he does not believe Venezuelan opposition leader Mar\u00eda Corina Machado has the support or respect needed to lead the country following the capture of Nicol\u00e1s Maduro. <\/p>\n

Pressed on whether he has been in contact with Machado since Maduro\u2019s capture, Trump said, \u201cno.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019d be very tough for her to be the leader. She doesn\u2019t have the support within or the respect within the country. She\u2019s a very nice woman, but she doesn\u2019t have the respect to be leader.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Democrats are accusing the Trump administration of lying to Congress in previous classified briefings on Venezuela, insisting that Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told members of Congress that regime change wasn\u2019t their goal. <\/p>\n

Senate Foreign Relations Ranking Member Jeanne Shaheen<\/strong> warned that Congress is in the dark on any \u201clong-term strategy\u201d on Venezuela and said the administration \u201cconsistently misled\u201d them. <\/p>\n

Sen. Andy Kim <\/strong>wrote in a post<\/a> on X that \u201cSecretaries Rubio and Hegseth looked every Senator in the eye a few weeks ago and said this wasn\u2019t about regime change. I didn\u2019t trust them then and we see now that they blatantly lied to Congress.\u201d <\/p>\n

Rep. Jason Crow<\/strong>, a Democrat on the House Armed Services and Intelligence committees, agreed. \u201cThe Trump Administration repeatedly lied to Congress and the American people about Venezuela. Over and over, officials testified that this was not about regime change,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

Sen. Chris Coons<\/strong>, the top Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee, also said that lawmakers were given \u201cfalse\u201d information by the administration. <\/p>\n

Democrats also demanded an immediate briefing on the operation and the administration\u2019s plan to deal with the aftermath of removing Maduro. The Senate is scheduled to return from recess on Monday, and the House is set to return on Tuesday. <\/p>\n

Remember:<\/strong> Following a briefing by Rubio and Hegseth in December, ahead of the holiday recess, senators from both parties told CNN they left without a clear sense of whether the administration was actively working toward a regime change in Venezuela. <\/p>\n

At the time, GOP Sen. Markwayne Mullin insisted that regime change \u201cwas never a conversation\u201d in the briefing with all senators, and Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy said that the briefers were \u201cvery careful in that briefing not to get over their skis on the future war plans.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

President Donald Trump clarified that the US would put troops in Venezuela for the purposes of securing oil, vowing the money would go toward reimbursing Venezuelans and the United States for damages caused under Nicol\u00e1s Maduro\u2019s leadership. <\/p>\n

Trump said earlier during a news conference in Florida that he would not rule out the possibility of US military involvement, saying, \u201cWe\u2019re not afraid of boots in the ground.\u201d <\/p>\n

Asked by CNN\u2019s Kevin Liptak whether he envisions US boots on the ground while the US essentially runs the Venezuelan government in an interim period, Trump said, \u201cWell, no, we\u2019re going to have a presence in Venezuela as it pertains to oil.\u201d <\/p>\n

Trump downplayed how many troops would be needed, adding, \u201cWe\u2019re sending our expertise in, so you may need something, not very much.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
