\u2022 Venezuela\u2019s future: <\/strong>The US is starting to outline its plans for Venezuela<\/a> after the capture of President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/a>, prioritizing administrative stability and repairing the country\u2019s oil infrastructure<\/a> over an immediate turn to democracy, according to US officials. <\/p>\n

\u2022 Troops and oil: <\/strong>President Donald Trump won\u2019t rule out putting US forces in Venezuela<\/a> as he maintains \u201cleverage\u201d<\/a> over the country\u2019s future, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said today in TV interviews. Rep. Jim Himes, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, expressed outrage today that he had not been contacted directly by the Trump administration after the operation to capture and arrest Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro. <\/p>\n

\u201cStill haven\u2019t gotten a phone call,\u201d Himes told CNN\u2019s Dana Bash on \u201cState of the Union,\u201d explaining that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth\u2019s staff called staff on the intelligence committee yesterday, but \u201cthis is a long pattern, and a particularly egregious example of a pattern of this administration not given a hoot about the United States Congress.\u201d <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rick Crawford defended the administration\u2019s decision not to tell Congress about Maduro\u2019s arrest in advance of the operation. <\/p>\n

Crawford argued on Fox News\u2019 \u201cSunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo\u201d that they were not required to do so because it was a \u201claw enforcement action, first and foremost,\u201d and they were also acting in the interest of protecting \u201coperational security.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Tom Cotton emphasized that the desired outcome in Venezuela is a government that supports American interests. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we want is a future Venezuelan government that will be pro-American, that will contribute to stability, order and prosperity, not only in Venezuela, but in our own backyard,\u201d Cotton said on CNN\u2019s \u201cState of the Union,\u201d adding that new \u201clegitimate\u201d elections including members of the country\u2019s opposition party will likely be a next step. <\/p>\n

Cotton acknowledged that the US doesn\u2019t recognize Delcy Rodr\u00edguez, Maduro\u2019s vice president who has now claimed authority, as the \u201clegitimate ruler\u201d of Venezuela, since she and Maduro came to power by claiming victory in an election that was widely scrutinized in Venezuela and by the international community. <\/p>\n

Pressed by CNN\u2019s Dana Bash on if he would support US troops on the ground in Venezuela, particularly to protect oil fields<\/a>, Cotton responded, \u201cI think that Delcy Rodr\u00edguez and the other ministers Venezuela understand now what the US military is capable of.\u201d <\/p>\n

In a separate interview on CBS today, Cotton warned, \u201cWhat we just did with Nicol\u00e1s Maduro could be done again to other Venezuelan leaders,\u201d highlighting that many other of the country\u2019s officials have been indicted in US courts and sanctioned. <\/p>\n

He said he interpreted Trump\u2019s statement about potential follow-up strikes in Venezuela as \u201curging them to change their ways or face the same consequences.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Secretary of State Marco Rubio began laying out the Trump administration\u2019s position on the future of Venezuela during a series of interviews on Sunday morning political talk shows. <\/p>\n

Rubio faced a slew of questions over the US role in the country following yesterday\u2019s capture of President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The secretary of state sought to clarify President Donald Trump\u2019s claim that the US will be \u201crunning\u201d Venezuela<\/a> in the near-term, saying the administration\u2019s focus is on setting future policy.<\/a> <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s running policy,\u201d he told NBC\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press,\u201d adding that the \u201centire national security apparatus\u201d will be involved in those decisions. <\/p>\n

The top US diplomat also said the US wants to see a democratic transition<\/a> in Venezuela, but he did not provide a timeline for that process. <\/p>\n

He told CBS\u2019 \u201cFace the Nation\u201d that the expectation of a quick turnaround election after Maduro\u2019s arrest is \u201cabsurd\u201d given that the country has had \u201cthis system of Chavismo in place for 15 or 16 years.\u201d <\/p>\n
