President Donald Trump has heralded his operation in Venezuela as a victory, praising the “spectacular assault\u201d that led to the successful capture of fallen President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores<\/a>. However, while the Trump Administration celebrates what it considers to be a win, others have voiced serious concerns about the way in which the U.S. conducted its assault.<\/p>\n

The United Nations on Tuesday said the action from the U.S. has made \u201call States less safe around the world<\/a>.\u201d This follows significant criticism and caution<\/a> from world leaders regarding the Venezuela operation. Furthermore, since Saturday\u2019s pre-dawn raid in Caracas, Trump has threatened that the U.S. may carry out interventions<\/a> elsewhere in the world, prompting further concern and disapproval<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

At home in the U.S., calls for the President\u2019s impeachment are now gaining momentum, as some Democratic lawmakers, along with prominent figures in the political space, demand that action be taken.<\/p>\n

Rep. April McClain Delaney of Maryland on Monday called for the Democratic Caucus to \u201cimminently consider impeachment proceedings\u201d against Trump in response to his military action in Venezuela.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

How the World Is Reacting to the U.S. Capture of Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cOver the weekend, we saw the President\u2014without authorization or approval from Congress, as required by our Constitution\u2014launch an attack on Venezuela and voice his intention to \u2018run\u2019 the country,\u201d said Delaney<\/a>, who criticized her Republican colleagues, accusing them of \u201callowing Trump to defy the rule of law.\u201d<\/p>\n

Urging a response from Congress, Delaney added: \u201cIt is time\u2014full stop\u2014for Congress to step up to the plate and stop this Administration’s unauthorized and harmful actions.\u201d<\/p>\n

This was just the latest serious call for impeachment, as many Democrat lawmakers have labeled Trump\u2019s actions in Venezuela an \u201cimpeachable\u201d matter.<\/p>\n

Calls for Trump\u2019s impeachment gather momentum<\/strong><\/h2>\n

California state Sen. Scott Wiener, who is running for Rep. Nancy Pelosi\u2019s Congress seat<\/a>, has called for Trump to be impeached over, what he refers to as, the \u201cillegal invasion and coup in Venezuela.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump illegally invaded Venezuela, seizing and bombing the capitol, seizing the country\u2019s oil assets, and taking President Maduro and his wife prisoner,\u201d said Weiner in a press release<\/a> issued on Jan. 3.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cTrump has no legal authority to invade Venezuela, given lack of authorization by Congress. This lawless act is yet another impeachable offense by this thug President,\u201d claimed Wiener, who cited concerns that the President\u2019s actions could prompt \u201cChina to invade Taiwan and Russia to escalate its conquest in Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rep. Delia C. Ramirez of Illinois described<\/a> Maduro\u2019s capture as a \u201ckidnapping\u201d and insisted the operation was \u201cillegal\u201d and amounted to \u201cdangerous violations of international and U.S. law.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump and his Administration are out of control because they believe they are untouchable. But they are not\u2026 Trump must be impeached,\u201d said Ramirez, who called for the War Powers Resolution<\/a>, submitted by Rep. Ilhan Omar last September, to be passed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The resolution<\/a>, which calls \u201cto direct the removal of United States Armed Forces from hostilities that have not been authorized by Congress,\u201d was referred to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs after its submission and is still awaiting a hearing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rep. Dan Goldman of New York accused Trump<\/a> of using the same \u201cillegal and unconstitutional tactics as Maduro\u201d in the operation, saying that such action \u201cnot only undermines our democracy and violates our Constitution but also emboldens dictators around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe President Trump\u2019s true motivation is to take control of Venezuela\u2019s vast oil resources as a favor to American oil executives who helped get him elected,\u201d alleged Goldman, who referred to the operation as a \u201cviolation of the United States Constitution\u201d that amounts to \u201can impeachable offense.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rep. Maxine Waters of California, who is also co-chair of the Congressional Caribbean Caucus, said<\/a> that Trump had no authority \u201cto bypass Congress to launch military strikes against a sovereign nation, while brazenly admitting that controlling Venezuela’s oil is part of his motivation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cMany Democrats have understandably questioned whether impeachment is possible again under the current political reality. I am reconsidering that view,\u201d said Waters in reference to previous attempts to impeach Trump during his first term as President.<\/p>\n

In an email to TIME on Monday, the White House defended the Venezuela operation and accused Democrats of taking \u201ctwisted stands\u201d in the wake of the military intervention.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt President Trump\u2019s direction, the Administration lawfully executed a federal arrest warrant against Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, which was issued by a federal judge for Maduro\u2019s corrupt and criminal actions as a narcoterrorist trafficking illicit narcotics into the United States,\u201d said White House deputy press secretary Anna Kelly.<\/p>\n

When has Trump previously faced impeachment?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In December 2019, Trump faced two articles of impeachment<\/a> when he was accused<\/a> of leveraging foreign assistance to Ukraine in order to coerce the country\u2019s new Administration to investigate Joe Biden, who at the time was the former Vice President.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The House of Representatives voted<\/a> mostly along party lines to impeach the President, sending the case to the Senate. Trump was ultimately acquitted<\/a> by the Senate in February 2020.<\/p>\n

A year later, the President was impeached<\/a> for a second time in a historic House vote. He was accused of provoking violent protesters to storm the Capitol building during the Jan. 6 riots.
