President Donald Trump said Friday he would sell China and Russia \u201call the oil they need\u201d as his administration takes control of Venezuela\u2019s oil sales. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe are open for business,\u201d he said. \u201cChina can buy all the oil they want from us, there or in the United States. Russia can get all the oil they need from us.\u201d <\/p>\n

Trump earlier during the White House meeting with energy executives justified his administration\u2019s capture of former Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro and takeover of the country\u2019s oil production by arguing that adversaries like China and Russia would have if the US didn\u2019t do it first. <\/p>\n

Executives from oil giants Chevron, Exxon and Conoco are among the more than a dozen attendees expected at the meeting, which could also include representatives from oil trading firms and other parts of the energy sector, two people familiar with the matter said<\/a>. The invite list at one point featured as many as 19 executives, though the people familiar cautioned that it remained in flux. <\/p>\n

To return Venezuela\u2019s production to pre-socialism levels, the oil industry would need to lay pipelines, set up drilling rigs, build port infrastructure and install reliable electricity, among other projects. That would cost more than $10 billion a year and take more than a decade to pay off, according to a consensus from industry experts<\/a>, insiders and Wright. <\/p>\n

However, with the massive oil reserves located in Venezuela, the administration is hoping investors will be lured by the prospective profit. As a start, executives are watching for the US to lift key sanctions that have suppressed Venezuela\u2019s production, as well as provide some of the supplies necessary to move the nation\u2019s heavier crude oil. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Spain\u2019s Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez said Friday that his country \u201csupports a peaceful transition\u201d in Venezuela, and that he expressed this to Venezuela\u2019s acting president, Delcy Rodr\u00edguez, and opposition leader Edmundo Gonz\u00e1lez. <\/p>\n

Spain, along with five Latin American governments, had condemned the US\u2019s military actions last Saturday that resulted in the capture of President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Venezuela\u2019s acting president has no plans to travel outside the country in the near future, the communication ministry said Friday. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear what prompted the announcement, but it comes a day after a source told CNN that Delcy Rodriguez <\/a>had been invited to Bogota after a phone conversation this week with Colombian President Gustavo Petro. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere are no plans for acting president Delcy Rodriguez to travel abroad in the near future. As a government, we are focused on the domestic agenda to guarantee our people\u2019s right to peace and stability,\u201d Communication Minister Freddy \u00d1\u00e1\u00f1ez said. <\/p>\n

The human rights organization Foro Penal says it has confirmed the release of nine political prisoners since yesterday\u2019s announcement by Venezuelan National Assembly President Jorge Rodr\u00edguez that \u201ca significant number\u201d of the prisoners would be released. <\/p>\n

Alfredo Romero \u2013 who is president of the group, also known as the Venezuelan Penal Forum \u2013 said that as of 11 a.m. Caracas time (10 a.m. ET), eight people had been released, including five Spanish citizens, whom CNN has reported on previously<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Romero shared the list of eight individuals<\/a> on his X account. <\/p>\n

Foro Penal Vice President Gonzalo Himiob later announced the release of a ninth person. <\/p>\n

The nine released represents just over 1% of the political prisoners held in Venezuela, Romero said. <\/p>\n

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Pablo Guanipa is not yet on the list, but Romero said he is expected to be among those released. <\/p>\n

Opposition leader weighs in: <\/strong>Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo Gonz\u00e1lez wrote on X<\/a> today that he held a call with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez, in which he emphasized that the release of prisoners must be verified and \u201ccannot be selective.\u201d <\/p>\n

Gonz\u00e1lez and Mar\u00eda Corina Machado, the two most prominent figures in the Venezuelan opposition, have repeatedly called for the release of political prisoners following the US attack on Venezuela last weekend. <\/p>\n

Members of the Trump administration told US lawmakers that they also made it clear to Venezuela it must release political prisoners<\/a>, among other demands following the US capture of ousted leader Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, a source previously told CNN. <\/p>\n

Venezuela announced on Friday the start of an \u201cexploratory diplomatic process\u201d with the United States. <\/p>\n

The foreign ministry said the process is aimed at \u201cre-establishing diplomatic missions in both countries,\u201d as well as addressing the consequences of what they described as the \u201caggression and kidnapping\u201d of President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. <\/p>\n

The ministry confirmed that a delegation of diplomatic officials from the US State Department had arrived in the country, saying they would \u201cconduct technical and logistical assessments.\u201d <\/p>\n

They also announced that a delegation of Venezuelan diplomats would travel to the United States \u201cto carry out the corresponding duties.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cVenezuela will confront this aggression through diplomatic channels,\u201d the ministry concluded, referring to the US pressure campaign against Venezuela. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Colombian President Gustavo Petro says he has asked Venezuela\u2019s acting president, Delcy Rodriguez, to work together to fight drug trafficking. <\/p>\n

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum described the recent statements made by her US counterpart, Donald Trump, about possible ground attacks on cartels as the US president\u2019s \u201cway of communicating\u201d and said that, if necessary, they will speak with him \u201cto strengthen coordination.\u201d <\/p>\n

A US State Department team traveled to Venezuela on Friday for the first time since the ouster of Nicol\u00e1s Maduro,<\/a> according to a US official. <\/p>\n

The visit comes as the US looks to reopen its embassy in Caracas and underscores the administration\u2019s desire to re-establish a diplomatic presence within the country that President Donald Trump says the US is going to \u201crun.\u201d <\/p>\n

The official said that US diplomatic and security personnel from the Venezuela Affairs Unit, which is based in Colombia, and the acting US ambassador to Colombia John McNamara, traveled to the Venezuelan capital \u201cto conduct an initial assessment for a potential phased resumption of operations.\u201d <\/p>\n

The US withdrew its diplomats and suspended operations at the embassy in 2019. The Venezuela Affairs Unit has been operating with a team of US diplomats at the embassy in Bogota. <\/p>\n

A senior State Department official said Monday the department was \u201cmaking preparations to allow for a reopening\u201d of its embassy in Venezuela \u201cshould the president make that decision.\u201d <\/p>\n

Former diplomats said that a lack of US presence on the ground would pose a challenge to rebuilding and ensuring accountability in Venezuela. President Donald Trump has said he wants to see US oil companies reopen their operations in the country and help with its rebuilding. US troops in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security \u201claunched from the USS Gerald R. Ford and apprehended Motor\/Tanker Olina in the Caribbean Sea without incident,\u201d the command said in a social media post. <\/p>\n
