{"id":9861,"date":"2026-02-05T11:19:38","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T11:19:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wpinitiate.com\/echo-test\/demo973e36f5\/2026\/02\/05\/us-must-be-prudent-when-supplying-arms-to-taiwan-xi-tells-trump-bbc\/"},"modified":"2026-02-05T11:19:38","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T11:19:38","slug":"us-must-be-prudent-when-supplying-arms-to-taiwan-xi-tells-trump-bbc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wpinitiate.com\/echo-test\/demo973e36f5\/2026\/02\/05\/us-must-be-prudent-when-supplying-arms-to-taiwan-xi-tells-trump-bbc\/","title":{"rendered":"US must be prudent when supplying arms to Taiwan, Xi tells Trump &#8211; BBC"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"main-content\">\n<div data-component=\"image-block\">\n<figure>\n<div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.files.bbci.co.uk\/bbcdotcom\/web\/20260126-113039-ddae8f6031-web-2.38.1-3\/grey-placeholder.png\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/480\/cpsprodpb\/afe4\/live\/494b2a50-022e-11f1-8566-473996904d56.jpg.webp\" loading=\"eager\" alt=\"Reuters Trump and Xi last met in October, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation in South Korea\"><span>Reuters<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption>Trump and Xi last met in October, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation in South Korea<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>China&#8217;s leader Xi Jinping has called Taiwan &#8220;the most important issue&#8221; in China-US relations during a phone call with US President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Xi told Trump to be &#8220;prudent&#8221; when supplying weapons to the island, state media report, adding that he attached &#8220;great importance&#8221; to ties with Washington and hoped both sides would find ways to resolve their differences.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Trump cast Wednesday&#8217;s call as &#8220;excellent&#8221; and &#8220;long and thorough&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>The call followed <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c3wz2x7ppz7o\">a flurry of visits by Western leaders<\/a>, including the UK&#8217;s Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, to China in recent months, hoping to reset relations with the world&#8217;s second-largest economy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Trump himself is due to visit China in April, a trip he said he &#8220;very much&#8221; looked forward to. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>He added that Beijing was considering buying 20 million tonnes of US soybeans, up from the current 12 million tonnes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>&#8220;The relationship with China, and my personal relationship with President Xi, is an extremely good one, and we both realize how important it is to keep it that way,&#8221; he wrote in a Truth Social post. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Apart from Taiwan and soybeans, Trump and Xi discussed Russia&#8217;s war in Ukraine, the current situation in Iran, and China&#8217;s purchase of oil and gas from the US, the US president wrote.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>On Taiwan, Xi said the self-governed island was &#8220;China&#8217;s territory&#8221; and that Beijing &#8220;must safeguard [Taiwan&#8217;s] sovereignty and territorial integrity&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>&#8220;The United States must handle the issue of arms sales to Taiwan with prudence,&#8221; he warned.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>China has long vowed to &#8220;reunify&#8221; with Taiwan and has not ruled out the use of force to do so.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>The US has formal ties with Beijing rather than Taiwan, and has walked a tight diplomatic rope for decades. But it remains a powerful ally of Taiwan and is the island&#8217;s biggest arms supplier.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>In December, the Trump administration announced a <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c7095g45p1po\">huge arms sale<\/a> worth around $11bn (\u00a38.2bn) to Taiwan, which included advanced rocket launchers, self-propelled howitzers and a variety of missiles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Beijing said at the time that this &#8220;attempt to support [Taiwan&#8217;s] independence&#8221; would only &#8220;accelerate the push towards a dangerous and violent situation across the Taiwan Strait&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>&#8220;Just as the United States has its concerns, China for its part also has concerns,&#8221; Xi told Trump on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>&#8220;If the two sides work in the same direction in the spirit of equality, respect and mutual benefit, we can surely find ways to address each other&#8217;s concerns.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>On Thursday, Taiwan&#8217;s leader Lai Ching-te told reporters relations with the US remained &#8220;rock solid&#8221; and that &#8220;all ongoing cooperation projects are continuing&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Relations between the two countries improved steadily in the last few months, following last year&#8217;s tariff war, and battles over chips and rare earths. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>While these still remain key sticking points, tensions appear to have ebbed since the two leaders <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c986j98qmj1o\">met in person in South Korea in October<\/a> and struck a deal which saw both sides de-escalating on some tariffs and rare earth export controls.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Negotiators from both countries also agreed on the framework for a deal on soybeans &#8211; where China would lift a ban on imports from the US &#8211; and a deal on TikTok, which was<a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c3edd1l328lo\"> finalised last month. <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Hours before his call with Trump, Xi held a virtual meeting with Russia&#8217;s President Vladimir Putin, in which both hailed the strengthening of ties between Beijing and Moscow.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Russian media say Putin also accepted Xi&#8217;s invitation to visit China in the first half of the year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>Xi&#8217;s calls with the two leaders have been characterised by Chinese state media as a clear sign to the rest of the world that China will remain a responsible and rational world power.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>A China Daily editorial said the calls showed that China would &#8220;continue to act as a stabilising force&#8221; at a time when &#8220;confrontation and unilateralism are on the rise&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>&#8220;Beijing is actively shouldering its responsibility &#8211; working together with major stakeholders to contribute to world peace and stability through responsible major-country diplomacy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p>&#8220;In doing so, China is showing other major players on the world stage the importance of refocusing on dialogue and coordination,&#8221; the  China Daily editorial added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reuters Trump and Xi last met in October, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation in South Korea China&#8217;s leader Xi Jinping has called Taiwan &#8220;the most important issue&#8221; in China-US relations during a phone call with US President Donald Trump.
