DW.com"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-tracking-skip=\"true\" data-tracking-name=\"rich-text\">\n<p>\u2060US President <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/us-president-donald-trump-russia-ukraine-israel-gaza-tariffs-trade-war\/t-19434433\">Donald Trump<\/a> signed an executive order on Friday that could impose a 25% tariff on countries that continue to trade with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/iran\/t-18996175\">Iran<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Trump first threatened the measure last month as tensions between Washington and Tehran continued to rise over Iran\u2019s nuclear program and a bloody crackdown by the Islamic Republic on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/2026-iran-protests\/t-75407674\">anti-regime protests<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" data-format=\"MASTER_LANDSCAPE\" data-id=\"75801385\" data-url=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/75801385_${formatId}.jpg\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\" alt=\"Iranian protesters gather around burning cars while blocking a street during a protest in Tehran, Iran, on January 8, 2026\" src=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/75801385_${formatId}.jpg\"><figcaption>Iran has launched a bloody crackdown on the latest wave of anti-regime protests<small>Image: Aghasht\/Middle East Images\/IMAGO<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>What does the executive order say?<\/h2>\n<p>The executive order, which takes effect on Saturday, directs the administration to impose new tariffs on countries that still do business\u00a0with Iran.<\/p>\n<p>It states that tariffs &#8220;may be imposed on goods imported into the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/united-states-of-america\/t-19065189\">United States<\/a> that are products of any country that directly or indirectly purchases, imports, or otherwise acquires any goods or services from Iran.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The order also sets out a mechanism for determining and applying those duties, with US\u00a0Secretary of State Marco Rubio tasked with setting the rate.<\/p>\n<p>The order notes that the tariff could be as high as 25%, echoing the figure Trump first floated in mid-January.<\/p>\n<p>Such measures would hit trade with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/china\/t-18480887\">China<\/a> \u2014\u00a0Iran\u2019s largest trading partner and the biggest buyer of Iranian oil \u2014 along with Russia, Germany, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n<p>The White House said the tariff was aimed at &#8220;holding Iran accountable for its pursuit of nuclear capabilities, support for terrorism, ballistic missile development\u00a0and regional destabilization that endanger American security, allies, and interests.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Trump has repeatedly threatened Iran&#8217;s leadership, citing its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/iran-witnesses-describe-violence-chaos-during-protests\/a-75786890\">brutal crackdown on demonstrators<\/a> during recent mass protests as well as its controversial nuclear program.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" data-format=\"MASTER_LANDSCAPE\" data-id=\"75835961\" data-url=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/75835961_${formatId}.jpg\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\" alt=\"A photo by Iran's Defense Ministry shows the Khorramshahr-4 missile being launched at a an undisclosed location, in Iran, on May 25, 2023\" src=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/75835961_${formatId}.jpg\"><figcaption>Iran\u2019s Khorramshahr is a long-range ballistic missile capable of striking targets across the Middle East and beyond (FILE: May 23, 2023)<small>Image: Iranian Defense Ministry\/AP Photo\/picture alliance<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>No deal yet from Iran talks, but negotations may continue\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Indirect<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/iran-urges-mutual-respect-as-talks-with-us-in-oman-begin\/live-75832688\">\u00a0talks in Oman<\/a>\u00a0on Friday\u00a0ended without an immediate breakthrough, but there are signs that negotiations would continue.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The talks in Muscat \u2014 the first since the US and Israel launched\u00a0strikes on Iranian nuclear sites in June \u2014 were mediated by Oman and described by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi as &#8220;a good start.&#8221; He had said the two sides &#8220;agreed to continue negotiations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Trump described the talks as &#8220;very good&#8221; and said &#8220;we&#8217;re going to meet against early next week.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Trump said Iran &#8220;looks like it wants to make a deal very badly,&#8221;\u00a0but warned again of consequences if no agreement is reached and insisted\u00a0Iran must never obtain nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking aboard Air Force One, he added that another meeting was planned for early next week.<\/p>\n<p>US\u00a0Navy Admiral\u00a0Brad Cooper, head of Central Command, attended the talks in Muscat, underscoring the military threat that Tehran faces\u00a0as US\u00a0warships, including the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, have begun patrols just off the Iranian\u00a0coast.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" data-format=\"MASTER_LANDSCAPE\" data-id=\"75842094\" data-url=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/75842094_${formatId}.jpg\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\" alt=\"In this photo released by the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, center, heads to the venue for talks between Iran and the US, in Muscat, Oman, on February 6, 2026\" src=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/75842094_${formatId}.jpg\"><figcaption>Talks in Muscat made no real headway, but Trump insists Iran wants a deal<small>Image: Iran Foreign Ministry\/AP Photo\/picture alliance<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Protest crackdown deepens crisis<\/h2>\n<p>Inside Iran, the government has imposed an internet blackout amid a sweeping crackdown on economic protests that began in December.<\/p>\n<p>The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) said Friday it had confirmed 6,505 protesters have been killed, along with 214 security personnel and 61 bystanders.<\/p>\n<p>Before the June war, Iran had been enriching uranium up to 60% purity \u2014 a short technical step from weapons\u2011grade material.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/international-atomic-energy-agency-iaea\/t-17449170\">International Atomic Energy Agency<\/a> has noted that Iran is the only non\u2011nuclear\u2011armed state to enrich to that level.<\/p>\n<p>Tehran has since refused IAEA requests to inspect the bombed sites, heightening concerns among nonproliferation experts.<\/p>\n<p>Iran had already restricted inspections following Trump\u2019s 2018 withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal.<\/p>\n<p><em>Edited by: Wesley Dockery<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2060US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday that could impose a 25% tariff on countries that continue to trade with Iran.
