The modern challenge of gaming without a strong Internet connection

    Feeling disconnected —

Massive patch downloads, online-focused game designs hinder millions of players.

Extreme close-up image of computer ports.

Enlarge / More and more these days, your ability to play new games depends on the quality of your Internet connection.

For many players these days, the video game industry’s increasing reliance on online connections is an afterthought. But for the significant portion of the world without a quality Internet connection, it can sometimes feel like the game industry at large is leaving them behind.

Pointing out the frustration of large day-one updates has been a feature of the gaming industry for more than a decade now. The topic perhaps reached its global breakthrough with the November 13 announcement that the Xbox One would require a day-one update to function. More recently, the Xbox Series X requires a one-time online check-in before some disc-based games will work.

Both Sony and Microsoft also introduced disc-drive-free options for their latest consoles, perhaps presaging the day when those drives are gone from consoles for good. And that’s not even mentioning the many multiplayer games that require a strong online connection for a reasonable play experience or the offline games that require not only day-one updates, but sometimes months of patching and downloadable fixes before they begin to resemble the product consumers had hoped for.

    Who’s being left behind?

Studies show that even the US and Europe, whose states and nations rank high in terms of Internet quality, still have millions of households with low or no Internet. As recently as November 2019, 13.4 percent of US households reported having no Internet connection at all. In addition to this, 0.6 percent were still on dial-up, and 4.1 percent were on satellite connections, both of which have lower top-speed capabilities. Numbers are similar in Europe where, in 2019, 90 percent of households had Internet access, only 88 percent of which had a broadband connection.

Even in these technologically advanced countries, those numbers represented tens of millions of potential players being essentially left behind by one of the largest and fastest-growing entertainment industries in the world. In other parts of the world, even more people are unable to play video games because of increasing Internet requirements and are at risk of being pushed out of the hobby because of it.

I write from personal experience. I live in the Falkland Islands, a British territory off the coast of South America, where I pay 120 pounds (roughly $165) per month for 57.2GB of capped data. That data comes in at maximum connection speeds of 5.25Mbps download & 768kbps upload. It often has a ping time between 500 and 800 ms.

The Falkland Islands are a very welcoming place, unless you're looking for high-speed Internet.

Enlarge / The Falkland Islands are a very welcoming place, unless you’re looking for high-speed Internet.

In recent years, thankfully, the sole Internet provider of the Falkland Islands—Sure South Atlantic—has allowed all downloads between midnight and 6 am to not count toward our monthly data package. That means we can freely update devices and download large files during that time. As a result, though, almost everyone in the country sets up downloads during that timeframe, and speeds become very slow. When I try to download a game or an update, it isn’t uncommon for the download to take a week, even if I’m downloading nothing else. And thanks to the high ping, playing online in anything but a turn-based game is difficult.

Many places have worse Internet connections, and many have none at all. For example, the total percentage of households with access to the Internet in Africa was only 14.3 percent in June 2020, while South America was only 72 percent in November 2020. By comparison, the limited Internet connections I can get in the Falklands are excellent.

Before I moved back to the Falklands from the UK, I was enjoying Elite Dangerous on the PS4 and got a strange pleasure out of getting trounced in Call of Duty. Since then, my multiplayer gaming has been limited primarily to real-time strategy games played through the in-the-same-room magic of the old-fashioned LAN party.

    What’s being lost?

Despite my Internet troubles, I realize that I am lucky to live in a place where society is relatively safe and stable. Many of the places around the world with the most limited Internet access also have other socioeconomic issues with infrastructure, poverty, or disease that would make playing games seem like an amazing luxury. I’ll leave those topics to a writer with a greater specific understanding and experience.

Even absent other problems, though, the lack of a quality Internet connection remains a significant bottleneck for many gamers. As it stands, the industry is showing that a house, neighborhood, city, or country that has less-developed Internet infrastructure might as well be a second-class citizen in the gaming world.

We’re amid a gaming revolution, and millions of people worldwide are being left behind. The ever-increasing number of people purchasing and playing games in recent years has been integral to helping improve the average quality of those games. When people are left behind by an industry, and the industry feels it has achieved this without losing any significant profit, they phase out the product the abandoned group was previously purchasing: in this case, single player and couch co-op games.

    Hey, this sounds familiar!

If you share in this struggle, then I’m sorry to say I don’t have much in the way of good advice. On a personal level, you could get a new modem or router and make sure to plug your gaming devices in with a wired connection. You can also practice deep-breathing techniques to calm down when the Internet slows down, as I’m sure others have suggested.

The Witcher 3 provide some of the most accessible modern gaming opportunities for those without a strong Internet connection.” data-height=”854″ data-width=”1280″ href=”https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/witcher3.jpg”>Massive single-player RPGs like <a href=The Witcher 3 provide some of the most accessible modern gaming opportunities for those without a strong Internet connection.” height=”427″ src=”https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/witcher3-640×427.jpg” width=”640″>

Enlarge / Massive single-player RPGs like The Witcher 3 provide some of the most accessible modern gaming opportunities for those without a strong Internet connection.

On consoles, at least, single-player RPGs tend to provide the best opportunity to play games without any mandatory downloads. So, while downloads may be present, they are primarily for patches and minor content add-ons. Ghost of Tsushima, Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and God of War are obvious choices. Games like Greedfall, Outer Worlds, and Darkest Dungeon have also been recent favorites on PC.

So, for now, there are titles you can play without being plagued by massive downloads or getting butchered in an online game—not because of the other players, but because the game is unplayable on your connection. But that may not continue to be the case if the video game industry continues to abandon millions of people around the world who don’t have the luxury of a high-speed Internet connection. With this in mind players should—when possible—support the companies that don’t consciously abandon potential customers, and companies should take into account the needs of the people who have made the current success of the industry possible.

  • The iPhone 13 could have satellite connectivity

The iPhone 13 could have satellite connectivity

Finally a fun iPhone 13 rumor! If Apple holds to its traditional schedule we’re mere weeks away from a new iPhone, and until now the rumors have been slight and, dare I say boring. Yet noted Apple prognosticator and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is now claiming the iPhone 13 could have the ability to make satellite calls built right in, according to MacRumors.

On Monday, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported Apple is developing emergency features that rely on satellite connections and said that while the next iPhone could have related hardware, those features are unlikely to be ready before next year at the earliest.

In a note to investors, Kuo claims that the iPhone 13 will be able to connect directly to low earth orbit (or LEO) satellites thanks to a customized Qualcomm X60 baseband chip. LEO satellites are probably best known as the backbone of Elon Musk’s Starlink internet service which relies on satellites in a lower orbit to beam internet down to customers and avoid some of the common pitfalls of satellite internet, including high latency, and common blackouts.

But Starlink isn’t the only company using LEO satellites for connectivity. Hughesnet and OneWeb have combined forces to roll out a competitor to Starlink and Immarsat announced a new constellation intended to blend with terrestrial 5G networks for a more global solution.

It appears that the real key to this iPhone rumor is Globalstar, which saw its stock skyrocket earlier this year when Qualcomm announced its upcoming X65 chip would support Globalstar’s Band n53 tech. 3GPP had previously approved Band n53 as a 5G band.

However, as PCMag’s resident 5G expert Sascha Segan points out on Twitter, Globalstar’s ambition for using the allotted bandwidth is strictly Earth-based. Adding a customized modem with support for n53 (among other bands) would give the next iPhone the cachet of offering early “global 5G support,” even if those signals can’t leave the planet yet. While that opens up wilder speculation that Apple could work with Globalstar on some kind of private network, simply adding n53 as an anchor for carrier aggregation or Licensed Assisted Access can help improve coverage or boost speeds when you need it most.

Qualcomm’s x65 modem supports b53/n53 but the x60 does not. However, the Qualcomm modem in the iPhones may be an … erm, x60-and-a-half. In other words, it could be an x60 + b53/n53. This DOES NOT IMPLY TALKING TO SATELLITES. It’s a ground based band G’star wants to enhance LTE

    — Sascha Segan (@saschasegan) August 30, 2021

If this rumor is true the X60 would likely be supporting another element of 5G, which is currently comprised of a whole mix of technologies, including the ultrafast but limited range millimeter-wave and the more widespread, but slower C-Band.

An iPhone with LEO 5G would provide support in places that don’t yet have towers beaming down the other forms of 5G speed—particularly useful in many rural areas that often struggle to get 3G or 4G connectivity.

What any kind of satellite connection means for battery life remains to be seen. There’s also the tree factor. Hopefully, no matter what it connects to, the X60 chip in the iPhone 13 won’t be as susceptible to arboreal interference as Starlink’s Dishy McFlatface.

Update August 30th, 6: 30PM ET: Added additional information from Sascha Segan about Globalstar and n53, and a report from Bloomberg about potential satellite-ready hardware in new iPhones.

  • IPFS Harbor: “We Are Aiming to Become the World Leading Storage Ecosystem Service Provider”

IPFS Harbor: “We Are Aiming to Become the World Leading Storage Ecosystem Service Provider”

New technologies will change not only the way we communicate or process payments but also our cities, transportation system and many other spheres. With smart cities, IoT and other large-scale innovations being around the corner, more and more people are concerned about the security of their data. Will Google or other major corporations control every aspect of our lives? Is there any alternative?

Luckily, with the advent of blockchain technologies, decentralized projects just keep showing us that there is indeed a better way to store our data and, of course, money. What the world is lacking is more ambitious infrastructure-level solutions for our common decentralized future. Let’s dive into one such project that was born in Sichuan, explore how it plans to solve our concerns for data security and how one can participate right away.

Q: How IPFS Harbor is different from simple storage like cloud products of the major tech companies?

A: IPFS Harbor is a technology enterprise focusing on professional decentralized storage hardware R&D, production, sales, hosting integration, committed to become the world’s leading IPFS storage ecosystem service provider.

We provide decentralized storage hardware R&D, IPFS system, marketing and custodian service.

In comparison with major tech companies, we provide lower cost of storage, higher transmission efficiency, professional options to ensure the incident of data loss, and most importantly, all of this is decentralized.

    Q: Who are your competitors?

A: Generally speaking, our competitors are centralized providers, such as Google, AWS, Baidu Cloud etc. IPFS is unique because it solves some of the shortcomings of current centralized storage. Filecoin is the incentive layer of IPFS, it mainly encourages the users to provide their storage, establish a decentralized Internet system.

Our current product is for providing professional hardware equipment and customized software systems to ensure our clients’ stable incentive and data security.

Q: Who can join the network and for what? Could it be regular people who are interested in cryptocurrencies, small businesses, corporations? What can they find there?

A: Everyone can join the network, all they need to do is install the IPFS on the client-side. As a client, it would be the best value way to provide their storage and also ensure security and stable data.

Q: Do you plan to issue your own currency like bitcoin?

A: Our company is a decentralized storage solution provider so we won’t consider issuing our own currency. Filecoin is the only recognized currency in the IPFS ecosystem. We will focus on the decentralized field and web 3.0 establishment.

Q: We saw that you have plans for storing information for smart cities? Do you plan to work with the governments? Will it be safe for citizens in terms of storing private data?

A: Yes, smart cities are a logical outcome of web 3.0. In the present situation, smart cities will have a large amount of data storage needs, and we need to provide safe, stable, and low-cost storage services.

We have reached technical cooperation with the University of Electronic Science and Technology Laboratory and will plan to build a connection with the government very soon.

For citizens, it is a safe and good choice as the IPFS feature is decentralized. IPFS Harbor is also determined to create storage applications that can be used by ordinary users.

Q: Yes, thank you for your clarification. But it must be tons of information? It seems that most of the major cryptocurrencies are struggling to find a solution for scaling. How do you plan to be able to process all this information without compromising safety and speed?

A: Yes, it is the same as other blockchain projects. Filecoin also suffered the TPS problem so it caused the higher gas fee and limitation of storage increasing. On 7th July, Filecoin updated v13 HyperDrive to decrease the gas fee and increase the speed for confirming a block of transactions.

Q: Also, in your plans for the digital economy you mention something about the Consumption upgrade? Could you please elaborate on that?

A: Mankind has already entered the digital economy era,  COVID-19 has enhanced the development of the digital economy, people can do all the things at home, such as online education, online shopping etc. It has produced massive data and has to be used in a safe way for storage management. In this case, Filecoin must be the best choice.

In the massive data storage market, Filecoin has solved:

    1. Storage at a lower cost, reducing storage cost consumption
    2. Provide the security guarantee because of distributed structure, and blockchain technology.

Q: Is it possible to join the network right now? Are you available for joining in all countries? Are there any preferences for early birds?

A: Yes, it can join anytime as Filecoin is open for everyone. We have a global marketing plan to welcome people from all countries and we already offer global services.

In the economic model of Filecoin, the sooner you join in, the more incentive you get because Filecoin is the incentive layout for users who provide storage earlier.

Q: Who are your leaders? How did they start such a global project?

A: Yingqu, Wan, the chairman of IPFS Harbor, graduated from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, an advanced figure in microelectronics. He is a senior investment consultant and entrepreneurial mentor, with rich experience in business operations. At the beginning of the company’s establishment, Mr. Wan Yingqu conducted an in-depth investigation of the Filecoin project and conducted research on the current storage market. He found that the storage market has high cost and low-efficiency problems, and there are big problems in data storage security. The storage market is in urgent need of innovation.

Based on this, IPFS Harbor was officially established, becoming a follower and builder of Filecoin, and aims to extend to the global market.

    Q: How is it governed?

A: Filecoin is a distributed storage network, and there is no centralization. Some large-scale smart miners already have more than 1/10 of the computing power, there may be many possibilities but the management and governance is total control by the IPFS ecosystem and economic model.

For storage providers, there are reliable staking mechanisms, lock-up mechanisms and disciplinary mechanisms, etc., it can effectively avoid the incident from some speculator

From an economic point of view, storage providers have no reason to delete or destroy user data. Only storing user data in accordance with the order contract is the most profitable and wisest choice.

Q: So, your headquarters are in Hong Kong? How tightening Chinese regulations are affecting your business? Do you expect other countries to tighten regulations for that?

A: In Chengdu. There is no impact on our business from the Chinese policy of prohibition of cryptocurrency mining. We are doing the data storage service that is totally legal business with practical application landing. And also, FIlecoin is less energy-demanding that is consistent with China’s carbon neutrality goals.

Similarly, there will be no problem with strong supervision for other countries.

Q: What growth plans does the company have? Are you looking for investments? What countries are you planning to cover in the next few years?

A: Our vision is to become the world-leading storage ecosystem service provider. And focus on the best service and customized products to our users. In the next 3-5 years, we will also promote the development of web 3.0.

We currently have completed the angel round of financing, and the hardware scale has exceeded $10 million, and we are planning to obtain contracts with professional blockchain investment institutions. At present, we are expanding the global market, it mainly covering Japan, South Korea, North America, Russia and Europe.

Q: You state that your mission is to promote the development of web 3.0? Why is it important for a regular citizen and what is your role in it? (In other words, how the presence of web 3.0 can help a regular user)

A: Yes. As the next-generation Internet, Web3.0 will be a major evolution of human society. Our production and lifestyle, living habits, communication methods, safety and other aspects will all change. Web3.0 includes many aspects, such as smart cities, smart homes, autonomous driving, etc., and as a storage service provider, we act as an infrastructure builder and play a cornerstone role.

  • 11 Ways to Upgrade Your Wi-Fi and Make Your Internet Faster

11 Ways to Upgrade Your Wi-Fi and Make Your Internet Faster

Whether you’re working from home, binge-watching Netflix, or streaming your gameplay on Twitch, there’s no such thing as too much bandwidth. Even if you have gigabyte fiber mainlined into your router, everyone could use help getting faster internet around the house. It doesn’t matter if you have the best possible wires outside your house—eliminating subpar speeds and Wi-Fi dead zones is largely up to you. To help, we’ve put together some suggestions on ways to troubleshoot and, hopefully, improve the quality of the Wi-Fi inside and outside your place.

Be sure to check our guides for more, including our how-to on securing your home Wi-Fi network, our router buying guide, an explainer on Wi-Fi 6, and our gear guide for working at home.

Updated August 2021: We’ve added some new routers, updated prices, and added more buying advice to this guide.

    1. Move Your Router

That router in the closet? Not a good idea. Walls, cupboards, even bookshelves can potentially dampen your Wi-Fi signal. Physically moving the router can make a real difference to the speeds you get and how far its wireless transmissions can reach. The perfect spot will depend on your home, but try not to hide your router in a corner or under a cupboard or inside a drawer—the more central and prominent it is, the better. For more info, read our guide to where to put your router for the best possible home Wi-Fi.

You might need to apply some creative cabling to get your router in a better place, but it’s going to be worth the effort for the end results. The goal is to get your main devices—consoles, laptops, and so on—as close as possible to your router. Devices that don’t need quite so much bandwidth, like smart thermostats, don’t have to be a priority in terms of physical proximity.

If you don’t have a flat surface near the best spot, you can mount your router halfway up a wall. If possible, keep it away from other devices that use electromagnetic waves; that includes baby monitors, wireless keyboards, and even microwaves.

    2. Use an Ethernet Cable

    Ethernet. It still works.

    Photograph: Eskay Lim/Getty Images

We sometimes forget: Wires still exist! You don’t need Wi-Fi. A wired connection to your router is usually preferable to a wireless one. It’s faster and more stable and can’t be affected by other devices or large fish tanks. The downside is that it limits where your devices can be, and it’s less convenient overall.

Still, for hardware that needs the fastest internet possible—a gaming console, desktop PC, or a streaming box, for example—it’s often well worth the effort to run a wire. The router will have a handful of Ethernet ports to spare, so all you need is a cable.

To do a really tidy job and avoid having wires trailing across your floor, you’ll need to deploy some cable management. Small brackets like these ($13 for a pack of 40) keep the Ethernet cable fixed to the walls. If you have several cables running in the same direction, these wall mounts ($10 for a pack of 50) work well. For one or two gadgets, it can be worth the extra setup.

    3. Change the Channel or Band

Wi-Fi signal is divided into channels. Your router uses a particular Wi-Fi channel to communicate with the devices around your home, and if you have neighbors living very close who have routers using the same Wi-Fi channel, then everything can get congested quickly. Switching channels can solve this problem.

Every router will handle this differently. Check its documentation or look up the instructions online if you’re not sure, but you should be able to find the option somewhere in the device settings. Channels 1, 6, and 11 are the ones to try, as they’ll have the least interference when multiple devices get hooked up.

Most routers now use dual-band technology, broadcasting at the 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz frequencies. If your router settings allow you, you might be able to prioritize one or the other for certain devices—the 5-GHz band will get you a faster connection to the internet, though it has a shorter range than 2.4 GHz. We suggest leaving both frequencies enabled since older devices will often work only on 2.4 GHz.

    4. Upgrade Your Router

    Netgear Nighthawk AX8

    Photograph: Amazon

Routers vary significantly in functionality and price, but in this case, the upgrade to make is generally in terms of how far your Wi-Fi is broadcast. If you have a large house, you’re likely better off with a router that can pair with “repeaters” that broadcast signals into the farthest reaches of your home. Smaller homes and apartments can generally get by with a simpler system. Read our router buying guide for more details.

    Routers we’ve tested and like:

For larger homes, we recommend a mesh network, where you install multiple router nodes around your house.

    Mesh network systems we like:

    Vilo Mesh Router

    Photograph: Vilo

There’s also the Google Nest Wifi system, which works well even though it lacks some features found in the other systems, and at $287 (Amazon) it’s not one of the cheaper options. At the other end of the spectrum is the new Vilo Mesh Wi-Fi System. You can buy a single Vilo mesh router for $20. If you need more coverage, a three-pack is $60. The downside is there’s no support for Wi-Fi 6. If you have a lot of brand-new devices that support Wi-Fi 6, that might be a deal breaker. We also found that some devices needed to be closer to the Vilo routers than on other systems. Still, if you’re on a tight budget, the Vilo might be the answer.

    5. Get a Wi-Fi Extender

If messing around with your router settings seems too daunting, and you have a few dollars to spare, invest in a Wi-Fi extender or repeater. These devices plug into a spare wall socket, connect to the wireless internet getting beamed out by your router, and then extend it.

They’re (usually) simple to set up, easy to use, and can instantly get rid of Wi-Fi dead zones in your house. The extended or repeated wireless signals won’t be as strong as the ones coming straight from your router, so again, positioning is important. Try to use these devices to connect gadgets that don’t need a huge amount of bandwidth.

You’ve got plenty of options: Take a look at the Linksys AC1900 or the Netgear EX7300, for example. Make sure the maximum supported Wi-Fi standard (e.g., 802.11ac) matches that of your router so you get as speedy a connection as possible.

    6. Use Your Electrical Wiring

    TP-Link Powerline

    Photograph: Amazon

An alternative to extenders is a powerline kit. Digital signals can pass through electrical wiring, and powerline devices are designed to take advantage of this. Several manufacturers make powerline networking kits, including Netgear ($110, Amazon) and TP-Link ($60, Amazon).

It works like this: You connect a powerline plug to your router, then put the plug into a wall socket. Add another powerline plug in any other room in your house, and it can provide a wired or wireless connection to that room. There will be some drop in speed, but it’s a simple and effective option. Unless your home is particularly old, it should have electrical wiring that supports this, but it’s best to buy your kit from a retailer with a robust return policy just in case.

    7. Add a Password to Your Wi-Fi

We probably don’t have to tell you this, but you need a password on your Wi-Fi network. It’s good for keeping hackers away and keeping neighbors from Netflixing off of your bandwidth, which will definitely slow you down. Make sure you use AES encryption, which is both the most secure and most speed-friendly security option.

    8. Cut Off Unused Devices

Having dozens of things tapping into the Wi-Fi at once can be problematic. Plug anything you can into Ethernet, and unplug anything you have connected but don’t need (like that “smart” tea kettle you never once got to work). Make sure only the things that need internet get internet.

Good routers (all of the routers listed above, for example) offer controls to prioritize a particular device or service. It’s a handy way to make sure your games never get interrupted by someone else streaming videos on Facebook.

    9. Check Your PC

This tip is specific to computers: If the internet on your PC or laptop is perpetually slow, but other devices seem fine, open your Task Manager or Activity Monitor and see which programs are running in the background. Certain programs could be set to auto-update that don’t need to be. If they’re always updating in the background, that could be the cause of your slow internet. Check it out and adjust the settings.

    10. Restart Your Router?

We’ve read this tip many times on the web, but we were skeptical. Restarting your router on a regular basis sounds like an extension of the age-old pseudo solution to everything digital: Reboot it. Yes, we know restarting your router can sometimes fix dead internet, but we asked router maker Netgear: Does regularly rebooting your router help speed things up? The short answer is, probably not.

Sandeep Harpalani, vice president of product management at Netgear, says the company does not recommend rebooting its routers “unless you actually encounter issues with connectivity or slowdowns due to radio frequency interference.” He adds that if you’re still using 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi and you’re having speed troubles, rebooting might help, since it will force the router to choose the best channel with the least interference during boot-up. If you’ve made the jump to 5 GHz, it will automatically switch to the channel with the least amount of interference.

Either way, there’s no reason to reboot regularly, the way some people have suggested. If you are having problems, then it may be worth restarting your router, but for the most part, stick with our other tips.

    11. Call Your ISP

If you’ve tried it all and still have problems, you can always contact your internet provider. They may want to send a service technician out. They might be able to pinpoint an overlooked issue that is getting in the way of you and fast Wi-Fi. With the ongoing pandemic, you may not want strangers in your house, and your ISP may not have technicians available to send. Still, if none of the rest of these tips solve your problem, it’s time to reach out to your provider to ask some questions.

Watch Drum Prodigy Nandi Bushell Perform With Foo Fighters as an Entire Arena Chants Her Name

The sweet story of an internet-famous drum prodigy has come full circle. After previously going viral for her cover of Nirvana’s “In Bloom,” which then sparked a virtual drum battle with Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, 11-year-old Nandi Bushell was asked to perform with the musician during an Aug. 26 concert at The Forum in Inglewood, CA. Nandi tweeted, “It happened!!!” Adding, “I had the best night ever jamming with you.”

“I had the best night ever jamming with you.”

Nandi joined YouTube when she was just 6 years old. Her first video shows her jamming with her dad, who’s playing the guitar. As her skills rapidly grew, so did her audience, with her cover of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” surpassing 600,000 views. (She was 7 years old at the time.) She’s since met Lenny Kravitz, been featured in Rolling Stone, and will make an appearance in Disney’s forthcoming Cinderella remake.

Preceding their recent onstage reunion, Dave praised Nandi in an interview with The New York Times last year, sharing his thoughts on her viral Nirvana cover. “I watched it in amazement, not only because she was nailing all of the parts, but the way that she would scream when she did her drum rolls. There’s something about seeing the joy and energy of a kid in love with an instrument,” he said. “She just seemed like a force of nature.”

Not only is Dave a fan, but his fans admire her, as well: if you listen closely to the performance video, you’ll hear the crowd chanting Nandi’s name before she and Foo Fighters launch into “Everlong.” Watch the incredible performance ahead.
