How to put stitches on a thread one by one

In this DROPS video we show how you can put stitches on a loose thread one by one.

Sometimes you want some sts to rest while working the others. If you don’t have a stitch holder you might as well use some scrap yarn. The video is showing how we put 1 st at the time on a thread at the end of each row from RS.
When these sts are later knitted again, make sure to knit them in the right loop so that they are not twisted.

Watch particles swirl in the world’s atmosphere

“Different kinds of particles are a different color,” explains climate scientist, Gavin Schmidt. “The easiest to see are the reddy-orange particles; those are dust and you can see them streaming them off the Sahara,” Also worth noting: white particles (pollution from burning coal and volcanoes); red dots (fires over a particular period); and blue color (seasalt being whipped up into air by the wind). Why should we care about any of this? “All of these particles in the air also affect the climate,” Schmidt says. Bringing together these disparate data in order to see how they all work together allows scientists to consider different future scenarios — and then plan for them.

    Malta

This video takes us on a journey to discover an island of contrasts and surprises: Malta.
From lounging on St.Peter’s pool beach to discovering the colourful village of Marsaxlokk, mingling with the fishermen and relaxing on the traditional Luzzu boats marked by “Eye of Osiris”, there is a whole island of stunning views to wake up to.
Add to that the famed old capital of Mdina, the imposing Saint John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta, and magnificent cliffs in Gozo and it’s easy to understand why most of the people start planning their return trip to Malta before they’ve even left the island the first time.

  • How to crochet back and forth with two colors

How to crochet back and forth with two colors

In this DROPS video we show how you can crochet back and forth with two colours.

You can use this technique to make small motifs, vertical lines, dots, letters… When you crochet with 2 colors back and forth and you want to carry along the thread, then you just crochet around the thread you are not working with to carry it along. On the last stitch you make with one color, wait with last pull through and pull through with the new color of the following stitch. You can carry along a color by crocheting around it for as many stitches you want, then when it is time to change, you just use it in the last pull through and continue with that color.

If it’s not a single motif and you will use the 2nd color again later on the row, you can carry it along while working around that one until you need it again. Remember – when carrying along a color or more the fabric will become much thicker.

  • How to knit a Moebius (Möbius) ring

How to knit a Moebius (Möbius) ring

In this DROPS video we show how you can knit a Moebius (Möbius) ring. Moebius was a German mathematician from the beginning of the 19th century, who developed the magically twisted circle ring on which this knitting technique is based.

Use a long circular needle – at least 32 inch. Cast on around double needle points. Number of sts cast on divided by gauge will give finished diameter. Pull out one needle and move sts to needle with no working yarn.
With other side of needle pick up sts in each long loop under each stitch all around. (Since not picking up in the first st you will end up with an odd total number of sts).
The needles should now be on the outside of the cable and the cable is twisted one time on the middle. Join and start knitting in the round. First time you get to the starting tail you have worked all sts cast on on needle and now you will make first round on the sts picked up and first time you work these you knit in the back loop. Following rounds will be worked in front loop as normally.
If you keep knitting in the round half your work will be in stockinette and half in reversed stockinette. Since you have an odd number of sts you could K1,P1 all around and your moebius will be all in seed sts.

  • super mario spacetime organ (illucia & soundplane)

super mario spacetime organ (illucia & soundplane)

I want to change the way we think about videogames. Will you stay in the loop? http://chrisnovello.com and http://twitter.com/paperkettle

In the video, I directly manipulate the RAM of Nintendo’s Super Mario Brothers to transform it from a game into a strange instrument. I use two hardware controllers: illucia (a patchbay instrument I designed that lets me connect computer software with cables), and the Soundplane (an amazing multitouch surface by Madrona Labs).

I begin by playing the game as one normally would, just using buttons on illucia.. but I also have access to the game’s memory, so I use the Y axis on the Soundplane to alter the value in the memory address that determines Mario’s Y position onscreen. This is how I make Mario fly and hover during the playthrough.

Also, before I start playing, notice that I flip a switch on illucia. This triggers recording — not video, but actually recording the entire memory state of the NES for each game frame. Because I’m saving the game ~30 times a second (and keeping log of all saves) I’m able to go back to any moment in Mario’s life. Sort of like a Super Mario time machine.

So then I use the X-axis of the Soundplane to sweep through the timeline of Mario’s universe. Not only that, but the Soundplane is multitouch, so I use a second finger to specify start and endpoints in a playback loop. This is similar to the way samplers and granular synths work, but for recordings of the entire memory state of the NES rather than audio data. Conceptually, it is like Super Mario meets Groundhog Day. Mario’s universe computer / time machine gets caught in hellish loops.

Then I use illucia to send alien data into Mario’s universe, which makes for all sorts of audiovisual insanity amidst the spacetime loops. I found some memory addresses that produce interesting results, so I use illucia to pump them with unexpected data. This is sort of like circuit bending, but in a protected sandbox – at any point I can revert back to the clean recording of RAM states (aka moments in Mario’s universe).

At that point I try to go back to “playing” the game, watching Mario navigate a melting world of glitched-out ephemera. Toward the end of the video I use a pair of rubberband mallets on the Soundplane to jump around in Mario’s timeline, all while illucia is left pouring a heavy stream of alien data into Mario’s RAM state. I eventually (accidentally/luckily) land at a place that triggers the game over music, and decide to end the take.

    =====================

    Disclaimer:

I don’t condone piracy or the distribution of Nintendo’s IP. I’m posting this video as part of a critical-cultural project. Further – although the emulator tools I used to make this performance are fully legal, I’m not distributing any other materials related to making these interventions into NES games, so please don’t ask. The video is shown with the intention of stimulating critical thought about the role of software in our lives.

By showing that there are other ways one could interact with this well-known cultural artifact, hopefully I can inspire others to consider: Who decides how and what we see in a computer program? What is hidden? What sorts of strange other things lurk beneath the surface of our trained expectations?

What if we lived in a culture that deeply embraced the expressive possibilities of computer programs? What if we encouraged curiosity about the interior of the systems that compose game worlds? Is that curiosity and critical inquiry itself not a form of play?

Indeed there are platforms that embrace this sort of approach, but many don’t. In fact, many close it off. What if we prioritized this sort of inquiry more? Might we find new frontiers for communication or even human knowledge and representation? What is a videogame, and how can it relate to all this?
