In this short video Professor Hans Rosling shows that people live longer in countries with a high GDP per capita. No high income countries have short life expectancy, and no low income countries have long life expectancy. Still, there is a huge difference in life expectancy between countries on the same income level, depending on how the money is distributed and how it is used.

In this DROPS video we show how to pick up sts along the side of a piece worked in garter st.
Between each “bump”, there are two rows/holes to pick up in. To make an even pickup it usually works well to pick up alternating two and one stitch between every two knots.

“Breathing other World” is my first timelapse project, shot between March 2013 and August 2014.
During this time, to create this video, I had to collect around 9000 photos, drive a couple of thousands Km, hike many hours to can achieve breathless places, sometimes with temperatures below zero and to stay throughout the nights with tent and sleeping bag.
For many, this could sounds a little crazy to do, but to me it has become a lifestyle, I love it! Camping in uncomfortable conditions under a starry night and watching a meteor shower, is something that I wouldn’t trade for anything else.
From coastline to mountains, to some National Parks, all footages in this video were filmed in Portugal and Spain, most of them were collected in my last road trips.
The goal of this piece was to show to everybody how beautiful this world is and how much is really out there, many times not so far away from our homes as probably we think. Take a trip, get an adventure, keep your eyes wide open and enjoy the world!
Please watch in HD Fullscreen and with volume up for best quality. To avoid skipping, please let the video fully load.
I hope you enjoy it! Feel free to share!

In this DROPS video we show how you can knit a hood.
When you want to add a knitted hood to a garment you pick up sts from the right side around the neck opening or knit the hood separate as in the video and sew it to the garment afterward. Knit back and forth on needles until desired length of hood.
In this video we are knitting in stockinette with 3 sts in garter each side towards the face opening. When the hood is finished, you bind off, fold double and sew from RS with stitches the same size as the knitted stitches. The seam will be invisible.
An alternative to bind off is to do a 3-needle bind off, or sew together the sides with kitchener sts, and you can find separate videos for that here in our video library.

In this DROPS video we show how to decrease to shape the toe on a knitted sock.
We show here a basic decrease for toe – there are many variations. We insert a marker each side with same number of sts on needles on upper and under foot.
Then dec for toe on each side of both markers and 2 K sts each side as follows – beg 3 sts before end of needle in first side: slip 1 st, K1, pass slipped st over, place marker, K1, on next needle K1, K2 tog. Repeat the dec on each side of foot on every row as in video, or on every other row for a longer toe, until 8 sts left on needle. Cut the thread, pull through remaining sts and fasten.

Presently, production outsourcing has become the norm: mass fabrication of goods at low costs improves corporate profit margins but pushes precarious labour conditions due to a race to the bottom in competing developing markets. Production entails long and precise processes before those goods reach our hands, many of which are pervasive in our daily life, and frequently in intimate contact with us, such as textiles. In such a context the market price we pay for goods has not absorbed the externalities created, thus we end up paying far less for them than the real impact they have in society and the environment.
OpenKnit offers an alternative landscape to this production model. It’s an open-source, low cost (under 550€), digital fabrication tool that affords the user the opportunity to create his own bespoke clothing from digital files. Starting from the raw material, the yarn, and straight to its end use, a garment ready to be worn. Designing and producing clothes digitally and wearing them can now happen in the very same place, rewarding the user with the ability to make decisions regarding creativity and responsibility.
In order to increase accessibility to this new tool, a step by step assembly manual is published while the software Knitic allows you to design your customized clothes easily and feed them into the printer, just a few clicks away. Do KnIt Yourself, acts as an open-source clothing platform, a virtual wardrobe that allows users to share clothes, not only with those near you.
Deeply inspired by the RepRap project, OpenKnit is an ongoing project that waits to evolve organically with/for the community. There’s a long and exciting way full of possibilities to be developed, I can think about many of them, but happily some are still unknown. Join the project http://openknit.org/
