  • Stop Drawing Dead Fish

    Stop Drawing Dead Fish

People are alive — they behave and respond. Creations within the computer can also live, behave, and respond… if they are allowed to. The message of this talk is that computer-based art tools should embrace both forms of life — artists behaving through real-time performance, and art behaving through real-time simulation. Everything we draw should be alive by default.

Part 1 talks about the potential of the computer as a new visual art medium. I show a collaboration between art and artist, with the art behaving through simulation, the artist behaving through performance, and the two of them working together, responding to each other.

Part 2 demonstrates a tool for “programming” how art should behave and respond. The artist directly manipulates art objects on the canvas, the way that visual art has always been created since the time of cave paintings. The tool is based around direct, geometric construction rather than indirect, algebraic “code”.

Part 3 is a short performance.

This talk was originally presented to SF SIGGRAPH on May 16 2012, and was recorded at the Exploratorium on November 27 2012.

Stockinette is the most common technique to create an even surface on the outside of your garment. When working in the round on circular needles or sock needles, you knit all sts on every round.

  • How to do Tunisian (Afghan) crochet

How to do Tunisian (Afghan) crochet

In this DROPS video we show how to do Tunesian crochet. Tunesian (Afghan) crochet is a technique that makes your work look knitted (for larger project you use a long crochet hook, called an Afghan hook).

Start with a row of chain stitches. Work first row by inserting the hook back into the second chain from hook, pull yarn through, then insert hook in next chain, pull yarn through and so on until end of chain row.
All new sts remain on the hook and at the end, there will be as many sts on the hook as the pattern required. Do not turn work, but now start binding off each stitch by first pulling yarn through 1 st, then yarn trough 2 sts at the same time until end of row. Make sure to have a constant number of sts everytime you pick up new sts. This technique creates a dense fabric in a grid pattern with a definite front and back side.

  • How to knit Fair Isle (2 color knitting) US/UK

How to knit Fair Isle (2 color knitting) US/UK

In this DROPS video we show how you can knit Fair Isle (2 colour knitting) using the US/UK method.

In this video we are following a chart back and forth on needles, knitting with two colors. The color that not is knitted is following behind the work when knitting RS rows. Make sure it’s not too tight or too loose. If more than 3 sts in a row of one of the colors, then twist the yarns for every 3 sts.
When working WS rows have the yarn following in front of work, again make sure you have the right tension on the thread. Note – if a color not is used all the way at the end of the row, you can drop it, but if it will be used at the beginning of the next row, then keep carry it a long by twisting around the working yarn. Don’t worry if it’s a bit uneven, it will even out a lot when blocking.

  • How to sew mattress stitches

    How to sew mattress stitches

In this DROPS video we show how to sew mattress stitches.

This is a common way of seaming together side-to-side pieces – like side seams on sweaters. In the video we use a contrasting color yarn so it’s easy to see what we are doing. If the tail from casting on is long enough use it to seam. Mattress stitching is done in the space between the edge stitch and the stitch next to it.

Lay the pieces side by side with the right side facing you.
Pull the edge stitch slightly away from the stitch next to it so that you can see the bar between the edge st and the next st. Insert your yarn needle under the bar. Pull the yarn through the bar and then insert the needle under the bar on the other piece. Work back and forth, inserting the needle under the bar on one piece then the other piece. As you go along you can pull the yarn in the direction of the seam and the pieces will be joined with an invisible seam.
