Can an Inverter Air Conditioner Run on Solar Panels Without a Battery? A Detailed Test and Analysis

As the demand for sustainable energy grows, many users are now exploring the possibility of running heavy appliances like air conditioners directly on solar panels, without using batteries. One of the most common questions we receive is: Can a Daikin or LG inverter air conditioner run directly on solar power? If yes, how many panels would be required? Can it be done without batteries? In this article, we answer all these questions with real-time data and testing.

Testing Setup
We conducted a practical test using an LG 1.5 Ton inverter air conditioner with a 3 kW solar panel setup. The system was connected to an inverter and monitored under full load conditions.

At the start of the test:
The solar panels were generating 1.8 kW
A household load of 1.2 kW was running
About 500 W of power was charging the battery (which was not yet fully charged)
The grid supply was disconnected, making the setup entirely off-grid
Battery-less System Limitations
If the system had no battery:
The solar generation would automatically drop due to low load
The excess 500 W being sent to the battery would be wasted
This would reduce the total generation from 1.8 kW to just around 1.2 kW
Your air conditioner wouldn’t run smoothly, or not at all
Running the Air Conditioner on Solar Power
The air conditioner was started at 24°C, and it began to gradually take load:
The load increased from 400 W to 800 W, and then up to 2 kW
Solar power generation increased slightly, but remained capped at 2 kW
Despite having a 3 kW solar panel setup, maximum power output reached only about 2 kW due to:
Time of day (11:00 AM)
Weather variability
AC load fluctuations
As the load exceeded solar power generation (~3 kW at peak), the extra power (~700 W) was drawn from the battery.
What If You Don’t Use a Battery?
Without a battery:
The extra 700 W would not be available
The air conditioner would either not start, or it would trip under load
You would need to install an additional 1.5 kW of solar panels (total ~4.5 kW) to cover the load fully under direct solar
Even then, this setup would only work during peak sun hours (around 12:00 PM) and under ideal conditions
Solar Power Generation Fluctuations
Using a monitoring system, we observed:
Peak power generation (~2.2 kW) was available only around noon
By 2:00 PM, generation started dropping
By 4:00 PM, it fell to about 1.5 kW
The air conditioner still consumed 2.2 kW, and the difference was covered by battery
In a battery-less system, as the solar generation dips and demand stays constant, the AC will stop working.
