The $100 million Chisamba Solar Power Plant is set to be officially commissioned tomorrow by President Hakainde Hichilema.

ZESCO spokesperson Matongo Maumbi confirmed the development, stating that the 100-megawatt facility marks a major milestone in Zambia’s energy diversification efforts.

Mr. Maumbi said the solar PV plant is the first and largest of its kind in the country and serves as a benchmark for the implementation of other solar projects.

He noted that the project contributes to the target set by President Hichilema to produce 1,000 megawatts of electricity from solar projects by the end of 2025.

In an interview with ZNBC in Chisamba, Mr. Maumbi also revealed that Phase 2 of the project will commence soon.

He further stated that ZESCO is working with the private sector to set up solar plants in various parts of the country to meet the 1,000-megawatt target by 2025.

Meanwhile, Chisamba Solar Power Plant Manager Chiz Nyirenda said approximately 1,300 workers were employed during the construction phase, with 98 percent drawn from surrounding local communities.

Mr. Nyirenda added that the plant was technically commissioned in May and began transmitting power into ZESCO’s transmission network.

He said that with the plant now operational, 100 workers will be employed—40 directly and 60 indirectly.
